Dear students, this year’s ethics paper again re-emphasises on conceptual clarity and the ability to apply ethical principles in real life scenarios.
I have been telling you again and again that Ethics is not about content accumulation alone ( definitions, elaborate examples etc ). As you can see in this paper also, how that approach won’t help you in generating arguments in such papers.

Quick Tips for Tomorrow`s ethics paper
1. Don't compromise Section A for case studies , both are equally important. If questions are lengthy and multiple statement based, break them into parts and assign weight as per the actual “questions/sub parts asked”
2. UPSC may throw suprises with terms (e.g. moral intuition vs moral reasoning etc)..don't be discouraged by such questions. They are equally tough for everyone. Just apply your presence of mind ( like you do in prelims paper, there also similar questions come )..break the term, think around it's constituents, nature, strength/weaknesses, application, relevance, examples etc and you will have a decent answer.
3. Don't waste time over any quote based questions/case studies which you don't understand properly.
4. Don't just dump examples and definitions, especially in analytical/argumentative questions. As far as possible give reasoning (need not write full sentences if you can convey the meaning)
5. If the case studies are of similar nature, try to connect keywords/arguments with the subject matter of the case study to make it specific. (this should be done generally also but more so in the similar case studies.
6. Read questions very very carefully & identify its various parts, especially if the question is very lengthy (even at the cost of writing a lesser number of points). You will not get marks if you don't address the demand of the question.
7. Try to write examples at least for the initial few points/arguments of every section/subsection of the question.
8. Easy questions are the most difficult to score as differentiation becomes difficult. Please do ensure value addition (case studies, current examples & diagrams ) and depth in dimensions .

Ethics is more about thinking multi dimensionally , applying the content contextually and going extra mile for depth in the content.
And Sharma ji has done it consecutively by scoring 129 (2024) and 138 marks(2025) in ethics. (138 marks, perhaps the highest this year)
Both the times, he was enrolled in the ethics enrichment program.
So if you ask me , how you can utilise the ethics program best for your score, I would say, understand, revise , apply whatever is taught in the course and learn from the mistakes- repeat in loop.
There is no other method.
It’s quite boring.
But boring things, consistent things and faith , bring you closer to result.
Be boring.

Met my student Deepanshu AIR 38, CSE 2025 today. Whenever I have spoken to him, he comes across as a person who has a lot of conviction about his methods and resilience to steer through challenges. Aakriti had her all GS marks in the 80s in the previous attempt. But as they say, attitude determines altitude. Rather than getting overwhelmingly disheartened or feeling a victim of the circumstances, she accepted the reality, put her emotions aside, and went into a micro examination of her flaws and where she can improve.
A similar thing happened when she met me two days before the PT for the DAF discussion. Her answers during the discussion were not that great, and I gave her a bit of blunt feedback (which I later regretted as it might have affected her confidence). But then she took that also on her chin, and for the next two days, she went into contemplation mode only about how she should present her answers. She got 212 marks in PT this year, and her ethics marks improved by about 22 marks. she has secured AIR 93 this year.
Friends, mindset plays a big role in shaping our life trajectory. At times, things might not go our way, but we should have this honesty of critical examination and belief in self-improvement.
I was also fortunate to speak to her mother during this podcast (it felt like speaking to my own mother). So much warmth and affection, she showered upon me. Aakriti’s mindset reflects the nurturing by her parents. They supported her through thick and thin.
Blessed are those children who have got such supportive parents. May we, the children, discharge our responsibilities towards them diligently. May God give us that strength.
