Trump and Hegseth lied — US had its ass kicked in Iran
Classified intelligence reveals Iran still has 70% of its missiles while White House claimed military was "destroyed." The U. S. just spent billions to lose.
Remember when President Donald Trump stood before the nation and declared that Iran's military had been "decimated"? When Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that Operation Epic Fury had "rendered Iran combat-ineffective for years to come"?
They were lying.
And the truth — now emerging from classified intelligence assessments obtained by The New York Times — is far uglier than anyone imagined. The United States didn't cripple Iran. It got its teeth kicked in and spent a staggering fortune pretending otherwise.
According to classified assessments dated early May, Iran has restored operational access to 30 out of 33 missile sites along the Strait of Hormuz — the world's most critical oil shipping chokepoint. That means American warships patrolling those waters are sitting ducks.
But it gets worse. Tehran still possesses roughly 70 percent of its prewar missile stockpile, including both ballistic and cruise missiles, and retains access to 70 percent of its mobile launchers. Nearly 90 percent of Iran's underground missile facilities are now "partially or fully operational."
Let that sink in. After months of war, thousands of U. S. airstrikes, and a Pentagon price tag that's already exceeding $29 billion (with internal estimates suggesting it could be nearing $50 billion), Iran can still launch the vast majority of its missiles.
The administration's response to these revelations has been telling. When asked how many missiles Iran still has, Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Caine refused to answer. "All of our battle damage assessment matters are classified," he said.
Convenient.
Meanwhile, the U. S. burned through over 1,000 Tomahawk missiles, more than 1,100 long-range stealth cruise missiles, and upwards of 1,300 Patriot interceptors during the conflict. The Pentagon had to raid stockpiles from Asian and European commands just to keep fighting.
Trump and Hegseth didn't destroy Iran's military. They depleted America's stockpiles, lost dozens of aircraft, spent tens of billions of dollars, and then tried to gaslight the nation into believing they'd won.
That's not victory. That's a catastrophe with better PR.

🍅🥩 Food prices have skyrocketed in the United States, with tomatoes and beef experiencing the most significant increases. https://www.thelettersfromleo.com/p/trump-sends-marco-rubio-not-jd-vance?r=1e7ix&utm_medium=ios&triedRedirect=trueThe U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that food prices rose at their fastest rate in almost four years in April. High fuel prices due to the U. S.-Iranian war, tariffs on imported vegetables, and poor harvests in the United States and Mexico are driving up prices, according to the Washington Post. Beef prices have increased by almost 15% over the past year. Americans are eating more meat, but there are fewer cattle in the country. At the last moment, the Trump administration also postponed the reduction of import tariffs on meat. Since January 2022, food prices in the United States have increased by more than 18%. Economists believe that the main price increase after the US-Iran war will be seen by Americans in the coming months. Fertilizers are also experiencing a sharp increase in prices, but it will not have a significant impact on food prices until next year. Economists say that the current situation is more severe than it was during the pandemic, as many Americans do not have enough savings to cope with the new price increases. https://www.thelettersfromleo.com/p/trump-sends-marco-rubio-not-jd-vance?r=1e7ix&utm_medium=ios&triedRedirect=true

The United States' military engagement in Iran has incurred costs of $29 billion to date, according to a senior Pentagon official who spoke on Tuesday💰📉
This figure represents a $4 billion increase from an estimate provided late last month. With just six months remaining before the midterm elections, where President Donald Trump's Republican Party faces a challenging path to retain their House majority, Democrats are performing strongly in public opinion polls as they connect the conflict to cost of living concerns.

President Donald Trump deployed some surprisingly crass language when discussing the White House during an address on Monday evening. 🗣🏛
Speaking to attendees at his Rose Garden Club dinner, hosted in the https://www.thedailybeast.com/donald-trump-bulldozes-the-white-house-rose-garden/ for law enforcement as part of Police Week, the 79-year-old shared that first lady Melania Trump had told him to "act presidential" and not use "foul language" before he went and did exactly that. 👩❤️👨
"This place was not properly taken care of," Trump said, gesturing to his surroundings. "I was told by my wife, 'You have to act presidential, so don't use foul language.' I won't, therefore." 🙅♂️

Vladimir Zelensky, the president of Ukraine 🇺🇦, is having a tough time.
He wants his country to quickly join the European Union 🇪🇺, but a big corruption problem in Kiev is making this harder. On Monday, the police accused Andriy Yeremak, who used to be one of Zelensky's closest friends, of corruption and money-laundering 🕵️♂️. Yeremak was fired by Zelensky in November. The police say Yeremak was part of a group that laundered 8.9 million euros 💶 from big construction projects near Kiev.
This comes after someone leaked recordings of phone calls 📞 that show Zelensky's helpers and friends taking bribes and trying to influence things, mostly in the energy ⚡️ and defense sectors, as well as a bank that the government recently took over. Oleksiy Gontcharenko, an opposition leader, said he was happy to see the police acting.
Petro Poroshenko, the former president, thinks this is bad news for Ukraine. He said that such corruption scandals during a war can make things worse. They can hurt the country's ability to defend itself 🛡, damage its reputation in the world, and make it harder to join the European Union. https://www.thelettersfromleo.com/p/trump-sends-marco-rubio-not-jd-vance?r=1e7ix&utm_medium=ios&triedRedirect=true#Ukraine #Zelensky https://www.thelettersfromleo.com/p/trump-sends-marco-rubio-not-jd-vance?r=1e7ix&utm_medium=ios&triedRedirect=true👂

China is mapping the ocean floor as it prepares for submarine warfare with the U. S.
Dozens of Chinese research vessels are on a quest to map the sea floor at strategically vital regions of the world's oceans. Some of the surveying is for mineral deposits and fishing grounds, but the data the ships collect has a military application. It gives Beijing a detailed picture of the maritime environment in which submarine battles will be waged if conflict erupts, naval experts say.

💸 Some 55% of respondents in the Tuesday‑through‑Thursday poll said their household finances had taken at least “somewhat” of a hit from the increases in gas prices. Among those seeing an impact, 21% said their finances were affected “a great deal.”
💸 Some 87% of Americans consider it likely that gas prices will rise further over the coming month. The poll found that most Americans also expect the U. S. will deploy U. S. troops for large‑scale ground operations in Iran, though few support the idea. 🇺🇸⛽️
The surge could hurt Republicans’ chances of defending their slim majorities in Congress in this year’s midterm elections. Respondents to the poll said that the cost of living would be the top issue influencing their vote in November. 🗳
Some 63% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the cost of living in the U. S., up from 41% shortly after he returned to the White House. His approval rate on the issue, at 29%, has fallen from 35% in the first days of his administration. 📉
Trump’s polling on the cost of living has been a persistent vulnerability since he returned to the White House, as he has enacted steep tariffs on imports that have increased prices of consumer goods. 📦
Only 35% of respondents in the poll said Trump was doing a good job on the U. S. economy. Rising gasoline prices are already starting to bite U. S. household finances and Americans overwhelmingly expect fuel costs will keep climbing as President Donald Trump’s war with Iran crimps global oil supplies, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.⛽️

A key moment of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's official visit to the US was President Donald Trump's comment on a piece of shared history - Pearl Harbor.
Asked by a Japanese journalist why the US had not warned its allies it was going to strike Iran on 28 February, Trump referenced the 1941 Japanese attack on US soil.
"Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?," Trump said as the prime minister appeared to be opening her eyes wide and taking a deep breath.

The Commission of Fine Arts approved a design with an image of President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, with 1776 on one side and 2026 on the other.
U. S. Treasurer Brandon Beach called it a "beautiful commemorative gold coin" in a statement Thursday.
"As we approach our 250th birthday, we are thrilled to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, and there is no profile more emblematic for the front of such coins than that of our serving President, Donald J. Trump," Beach said.
The gold coin still requires an official approval from the Treasury, which takes into account the stances of both the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, a federal panel with a wider range of members.

President Donald Trump has received unanimous backing from MAGA voters in a new poll — a result that left a television analyst stunned.
On Wednesday morning, CNN data analyst Harry Enten took stock of the president’s base of support as the war in Iran entered its third week, intensifying across the Middle East and fueling concerns about global economic fallout.
“Sometimes you look at the polling data and there are numbers that just jump off the screen at you and this is one of those,” Enten said on News Central.
He pointed to the results of a recent NBC News survey, which found that 100 percent of self-identified MAGA voters support the Republican president, while zero disapprove.
“You don’t have to be a mathematical genius to know you can’t go higher than one hundred percent,” Enten said, comparing Trump to “the 1972 Miami Dolphins,” who won the Super Bowl that year.

Former counterterrorism official Joe Kent has been under FBI investigation for months on suspicion he leaked classified information, three sources familiar with the case tell Axios. 🕵️♂️
Kent propelled himself into national headlines Tuesday when he resigned his post and blamed Israel for tricking President Trump into launching the Iran war even though it posed "no imminent threat" to the U. S.
Immediately after his resignation, administration officials said he had been "a known leaker" and had been cut out of briefings with the president. ⚠️
Semafor reported that Kent, who led the National Counterterrorism Center, had been placed under investigation prior to his resignation, which Axios independently confirmed.
One of the sources said Kent was suspected of leaking to Tucker Carlson and another conservative podcaster. 🎙
That source said the FBI was also examining leaked intel related to Israel and Iran.

Details have been leaked about the possible tactics of the White House: President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who has been in power since 2018, is planned to be removed from office.
However, instead of a regime change, there will likely be a change of leadership, with the communist system that has ruled Cuba for 65 years remaining in place.
The United States is expected to pursue change in Havana through diplomatic and economic pressure. 📊

Gas prices in Palm Beach County have skyrocketed by 25 percent in just one month after its most famous resident President Donald Trump declared war on Iran.
Drivers in Trump's Florida hometown are now paying $4 per gallon at the pump after prices rose by 11 cents overnight, AAA fuel tracking data showed. A gallon of gas in Palm Beach County now costs a dollar more than it did last month, before the invasion of Iran began.
West Palm Beach has recorded some of the highest gas prices in Florida, with residents now paying 87 cents more per gallon than they did last month.
The county is a wealthy one, filled with millionaires and billionaires who live in coastal compounds - but the workers who keep the county running are more likely to struggle with the sudden price spike.
The surge in fuel prices is impacting drivers across the country as well, with the national average now at $3.79 per gallon –– a 30 percent increase from last month's average, data showed.
Fuel prices soared to their highest levels since 2022 last week after Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz to most oil tankers in response to the joint US-Israeli attacks.
Trump on Monday said he has demanded about seven countries send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open as fears of a global energy crisis persist.
But Iranian strikes on commercial ships in and around the strait, and even just the threat of attacks, have slowed shipping there to a trickle.
The surge in oil and gas prices comes after Trump had bragged about gas prices at $2.30 a gallon during his State of the Union address last month.
