Filiki Etairia (Friendly Society) initially planned to start riots in Constantinople but ultimately aborted the plan so as not to massacre the thousands of Greeks in Constantinople. Another reason for choosing the southern regions was the fact that the Ottomans had open fronts in Iran and were also facing the rebellion of Ali Pasha of Ioannina, as well as the geographical opposite of the Danubian principalities of Moldavia where the leader of Filiki Etairia, Alexandros Ypsilantis, had raised the banner of the Revolution.

📃 Η Επανάσταση έγινε κυρίως στην Πελλοπόνησο και τη Στερεά Ελλάδα διότι ήταν μακριά από την πρωτεύουσα Κωσταντινούπολη. Η Φιλική Εταιρεία αρχικά σχεδίαζε να ξεκινήσει ταραχές στην Πόλη αλλά τελικά ματαίωσε το σχέδιο για να μην σφαγιασθούν οι χιλιάδες των Ελλήνων της Πόλης. Άλλος λόγος επιλογής των νοτιων περιοχών ήταν το γεγονός ότι οι Οθωμανοί είχαν ανοιχτά μέτωπα στο Ιράν και αντιμετώπιζαν και την ανταρσία του Αλή Πασά των Ιωαννίνων, καθώς και η γεωγραφική αντιδιάμετρος των παραδουνάβιων ηγεμονιών της Μολδοβλαχίας εκεί όπου είχε σηκώσει το λάβαρο της Επαναστάσεως ο αρχηγός της Φιλικής Εταιρείας Αλέξανδρος Υψηλάντης.

Ανήμερα του Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου, ο Παλαιών Πατρών Γερμανός ευλόγησε το λάβαρο της Επανάστασης στη Μονή Αγίας Λαύρας έξω από την Πάτρα, κηρύσσοντας την έναρξη του αγώνα. Η Επανάσταση τυπικά είχε ξεκινήσει ήδη από τις 17 Μαρτίου όταν οι Μανιάτες οπλαρχηγοί ύψωσαν την επαναστατική σημαία, ενώ τα επόμενα χρόνια σημειώθηκαν πανηγυρικές νίκες των Ελλήνων στις μάχες (Βαλτέτσι, Γραβιά, Δερβενάκια, Σπλάντζα, Σπέτσες, Τριπολιτσά), ηρωικές θυσίες (Αλαμάνα, Κάσος, Μεσολόγγι, Ψαρά) και εξεγέρσεις σε περισσότερες περιοχές (Νάουσα, Ρέθυμνο, Σούλι).
