This piece made me reminisce about my childhood spent with my granddad. I was about 10 or 11 at the time. In midsummer, at the crack of dawn, when the sun was deep red on the horizon, we would pack all our fishing gear and hit the road to the river that flowed near town. Even though it was more than 10 years ago, I can still remember the exact route to the river. The process itself, when I was just starting out, felt like a real ordeal - I was struggling with casting the rod, throwing the bait in the right way, and so on. And just picture this: it's still super early in the morning, you're sitting in a comfy folding chair, you've set your rod in front of you, and you're just keeping your mind clear of everyday hassles (I wouldn't say I was busy at 11 or anything, but anyway). Until the second the rod starts trembling and you think that's it - you jump off the chair, grab the rod, pull it out and see… nothing. Yep, back to square one, only because you're a kid, totally impatient, and like to jump the gun badly. My granddad, in turn, wasn't much of a talker, but when I did that, he would go off the rails at me - luckily, just for a couple of minutes. So once the emotions settled down, the next thing I knew was us sitting in the chairs again, taking in the view of the whole place.
The article claims that people who live off the land and seek this lifestyle will soon disappear. I disagree. Those mornings by the river weren't just childhood memories - they shaped what I want most in life now. Connecting with nature, finding peace both inner and outer - that's my ultimate goal. I don't think this way of living is fading away. If anything, more people are hungry for it than ever.
💭Over to you:
Do you have childhood memories connected to nature that still stay with you? What did they teach you about the kind of life you want to live?
Do you think the desire to disconnect from modern life and reconnect with nature is fading, or are more people actually craving it now?
