Ukrainian-Russian war. Day 1492-1497:
Situation on Sumy front: During the month of March, Russian Army carried out intense artillery bombardment south of Oleksiivka, destroying Ukrainian defenses in Mala Korchakivka and preventing Ukrainian Army from replenishing its capabilities to launch local counterattacks. This has allowed Russian forces to occupy the destroyed settlement of Mala Korchakivka in recent days and shift the combat zone to neighboring Korchakivka.
In addition, Russian troops also advanced this month north of Krasnopillia Raion, expanding the buffer zone around the border by capturing the forested area of Oleksandriya. This has allowed the Russians to launch infiltration operations into the locality of Myropillya.

Ten Israeli soldiers have been killed in fighting in southern Lebanon since the start of the invasion. 🇮🇱
The confirmed Israeli casualties are low compared to those of Hezbollah, whose deaths could be up to five times higher. This is common in an asymmetric war where one side is an army that outmatches the other militarily and technologically, while the other is a paramilitary and guerrilla group.
However, Israeli authorities have not disclosed the total number of wounded, which may be around fifty; according to the latest evacuation reports, their condition is listed as confidential, possibly serious.
The Israeli government may be concealing additional casualties among its soldiers, which would paint a picture inconsistent with the continuous ambushes and material damage suffered by the IDF in March (at least 90 Merkava tanks were hit—either destroyed or damaged).

Spain is leading the effort to ban the U. S. from using its bases for aggression against Iran. 🇪🇸 🇺🇸
The Spanish government, led by Pedro Sánchez, announced on March 30 that it was closing its airspace to U. S. aircraft involved in the war against Iran and denying them use of the joint bases at Rota and Morón, justifying the move as an “illegal” action under international law. This decision has forced the U. S. to reroute its aircraft.
Other European countries have partially joined the Spanish stance. Italy also denied, on March 27, the use of the Sigonella base (Sicily) to U. S. aircraft for operations related to Iran. France, on the other hand, has not allowed aircraft bound for Israel and loaded with military equipment to fly over its airspace since the weekend, but it is more ambiguous regarding the U. S. 🇮🇹🇫🇷

Israel continues its crackdown on the press and journalists.

On Saturday, March 28, Israel killed Ali Shuaib, Fatima Ftouni, and her brother Mohammad Ftouni. The three were traveling together in a vehicle clearly marked as press when they were struck by an Israeli attack.

- Ali Shuaib: A veteran correspondent with nearly three decades of experience, an icon of media resistance. For years, he covered Israeli attacks on Lebanon, Hezbollah operations, and the border—often engaging in direct confrontations with Israeli soldiers—and reported from the field during periods of high tension.

- Fatima Ftouni: She was a younger but already established journalist. She was deeply committed to “conveying the message of the people’s resistance.” Both she and her brother, cameraman Mohammad Ftouni, had recently lost seven family members to Israeli attacks.

The press & media expose Israel’s crimes, and for that reason, Tel Aviv must eliminate them, as it has been doing for years.

On Friday 27 March 2026, Iran launched a combined attack using ballistic missiles and drones against targets in Saudi Arabia, including the capital Riyadh and, specifically, Prince Sultan Air Base.
As a result, at least one KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling aircraft was destroyed (there are reports of two more) and an E-3 Sentry (AWACS) surveillance and control aircraft, as well as at least five other aircraft, were damaged.
In addition, around 20 US soldiers were injured, five of whom are in a critical condition.
This is not the first time aircraft have been lost at this base in Saudi Arabia. On 14 March, another five KC-135s were damaged in an Iranian attack.

Even with the significant Ukrainian losses in recent weeks, Ukrainian commanders continue to send troops to capitalize on Ukrainian successes, as is happening in Siversk, at the cost of losing ground west of Sloviansk.
Should the advance continue southward, Russia risks losing control of the supply routes to Huliaipole and being forced to withdraw from the Haichur River and part of the Yanchur River, as well as retreating to the border with the Donetsk Oblast, where Ukrainian forces would plan a further advance toward Komar and Velyka Novosilka.

Taking advantage of temporary Russian communications issues (primarily the blocking of Starlink for Russian troops), Ukrainian army has made significant advances since late January, managing to reverse some of the Russian gains made during the fall of 2025 on the Pokrovskaya, Velikomikhailovskaya & Huliaipole fronts. These gains have been greater after connecting with isolated Ukrainian troops due to the rapid Russian advance during those months, which has forced the Russian command to withdraw from several locations to avoid a loss of material & human resources in territory that had not been fully consolidated.
