"Batoul Alloush Is Not an Isolated Case
Batoul Alloush, an Alawite university student from Syria, was abducted and subsequently prevented from returning to her family under circumstances that raise grave concerns regarding coercion, sectarian persecution, and unlawful deprivation of liberty.
Days after her disappearance, Batoul appeared briefly in a video stating that she had converted her religion and had “migrated for the sake of God” — language deeply associated with jihadist discourse surrounding female captives and ideological control over women.
Her family was later promised that she would be returned within days. She never returned.
Soon afterward, Salafi cleric Abdul Razzaq al-Mahdi issued a fatwa prohibiting Batoul’s return to her family.
In a public appeal released through the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, her parents declared:
“Batoul has been abducted and enslaved.”
Batoul’s case cannot be understood outside the wider context that has emerged in Syria since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, when Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led by Abu Mohammad al-Jolani — now governing under the name Ahmad al-Sharaa as transitional president — together with allied jihadist factions, became the de facto authority across large parts of the country.
Since then, Alawites have faced escalating sectarian violence including massacres, systematic killings, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, forced displacement, dismissal from employment, religious incitement, and the abduction of women and girls.
The targeting of Alawite women is not incidental. It has become one of the clearest instruments of terror directed against the community itself.
... it reveals the broader reality that many attempted to deny: that sectarian dehumanization, when normalized long enough, eventually turns women’s bodies into battlegrounds and captivity into an ideological act.
What is happening today cannot be dismissed as isolated misconduct or individual extremism. It reflects a climate in which sectarian incitement, religious fatwas, and the language of domination over women have become tools of power under armed Islamist rule.
Batoul Alloush must be allowed to return freely and safely to her family, or to speak publicly under conditions free from intimidation and coercion.
The disappearance of Alawite women under ideological and sectarian authority is not a private matter.
It is a human rights emergency.
And silence will only deepen the violence."
