He calls for stronger platform safeguards, clearer scrutiny of recommendation systems and targeted improvements to the existing online safety framework.

“How wonderful it would be if I have a chance to do this one day!”
More than a decade ago, Kenny Chng (LLB, Class of 2012) had that thought while watching an SMU professor teach. Today, he is back at the Yong Pung How School of Law as an Associate Professor — and its first graduate to be awarded tenure.
Now on the other side of the seminar room, he hopes to help his own students recognise what they are capable of becoming.

Insights from a panel hosted by the SMU Master of Sustainability reveal why this requires more than financial expertise. As sustainable finance becomes more interdisciplinary and execution-focused, professionals increasingly need to work across finance, policy and impact.

Turning sustainability ideas into real-world urban solutions takes more than innovation — it takes support to scale.
SMU has launched the Urban SustaInnovator Fund, a US$10 million investment programme supporting startups from its Urban SustaInnovator accelerator as they grow across Singapore and Asia.
As South-east Asia’s first university-anchored co-investment fund dedicated to urban solutions and sustainability, the Fund will support ventures tackling urban challenges such as decarbonisation, mobility and circularity.

A meaningful afternoon of conversation and encouragement for our SMU mooting teams ⚖️
We were pleased to welcome Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Law & Ministry of Social and Family Development, Eric Chua, to SMU Yong Pung How School of Law, where he met with two of our sports law mooting teams — facilitated by Goh Chui Ling and Visiting Professor Björn Hessert.
The session brought together students from SMU’s most recent world champion team at the Sports Law Arbitration Moot (SLAM), alongside the team set to represent SMU at the upcoming Sports Arbitration Moot in Madrid on 22 May.
A key reminder from the discussion: while AI can support the process, sound judgment, preparation and critical thinking remain essential to developing future-ready legal professionals.
Thank you, SPS Eric Chua, for taking the time to meet with and encourage our students. We wish our mooting teams all the very best as they prepare to represent SMU on the global stage.

Congratulations to our SMU students on an outstanding showing at the SGLaw200 Youth Forum MinLaw Ideation Challenge 🏆
Team LegalSave clinched both the Champion and People’s Choice Awards, while Team OLS emerged Runner-up — with SMU teams taking two of the top three spots.
Especially encouraging was the boldness shown by our students in the ideas they put forward. The winning Team LegalSave — comprising first-year students — explored an out-of-the-box idea addressing challenges faced by the “sandwiched class”.
Bringing together perspectives from law, accountancy and computing, both teams showed the power of different perspectives in tackling complex societal issues.
Congratulations once again to our students 👏

Calixto Tay (BSc Information Systems, Class of 2013) started his SMU degree with a low-powered netbook he couldn't afford to upgrade. The SMU Merit Award covered a new laptop — and funded a study mission to China that led him to entrepreneurship and, eventually, Originally Us.
He has since run student financial awards for six years and mentored founders at SMU. One mentee founded an AI company and was accepted into a Silicon Valley incubator.
