That soft-labour park just got run over — and gold did not wait for the cash open to admit it.

August NFP printed +162k versus about 56k. July revised to +21k from -23k. Private payrolls +127k versus 45k. Unemployment still 4.1%. Wages +0.3% MoM / +3.1% YoY — right on consensus. So the hiring level is loud; the wage line is not inventing a new inflation scare on its own.

Marks now (Yahoo, ~13:50 BST): ES ~7,742 after sitting near 7,762 into the print. Gold futures dumped toward ~$4,440 from the ~$4,51x handle we had around the release. Silver ~$66. US 10y up to ~4.80% from ~4.76%. Dollar index ~99.3. Cable ~1.350, euro ~1.160. Brent still ~$95. VIX still ~14.2 — equities faded, they did not panic.

Plain English: Thursday bought Waller and soft ADP. Today’s payrolls say the labour cooling story was overdone. Equities gave back the park. Rates and the dollar firmed. Metals got the cleaner reprice. Oil did not collapse, which matters because ISM Services Prices Paid is still 72.6 — that inflation floor did not leave with the soft-labour sleeve.

What’s next: US cash open 14:30 UK. Watch whether ES extends the fade or whether “wages weren’t hot” buyers show up into the close. For September Fed, Waller already said August inflation is his swing factor — so next week’s CPI/PPI still decide hold vs hike more than this one payrolls print. Hot hiring just put the hike tail back on the table.

Cash bell in minutes — futures already did the soft-labour autopsy. Now we find out if cash agrees.

You know the print: August NFP +162k vs ~56k, July revised to +21k from -23k, private +127k, unemployment still 4.1%, wages +0.3% MoM / +3.1% YoY (at consensus). Hiring was loud. Wages were not a fresh scare on their own.

Marks now (Yahoo, ~14:21 BST): ES ~7,736 versus ~7,755 prior close — still soft into the open. Gold futures took another step toward ~$4,433 after dumping from the ~$4,51x handle around the release. Silver ~$65.8. US 10y ~4.79%. Dollar index ~99.3. Cable ~1.351, euro ~1.161. Brent still ~$94.5. VIX ~14.2. Interesting split: NQ is basically flat while ES and the Dow future are softer — tech holding better than the broad tape.

Plain English: the soft-labour sleeve is gone in futures. Metals already admitted it. Rates and the dollar firmed and then parked. Oil did not collapse, which matters because ISM Services Prices Paid is still 72.6 — that inflation floor did not leave with the labour story.

What’s next: first hour of US cash. Two and a half hours to payrolls and nobody wants to express a view.

Marks now (Yahoo, ~11:05 BST): ES still ~7,758 near Thursday's 7,748 cash close. Gold futures ~$4,514 after the morning reclaim near $4,528. Brent ~$95.5, WTI ~$91.1. EUR ~1.162, GBP ~1.352, USD/JPY ~156.4, DXY ~99.1. US 10y glued at ~4.76%. FTSE ~10,833. VIX ~14.2.

That is the tell into the print. Equities are babysitting Waller. The gold reclaim got sold again. Oil is still the inflation floor under any dovish labour read. FX has barely twitched since Europe's soft demand stack printed earlier.

London already did its bit: UK construction PMI 44.3 (miss vs 45.5) and Eurostat July euro-area retail -0.6% MoM (street wanted about +0.3%). Cable and the euro treated both as noise. So the book is not pricing a European demand shock. It is waiting for US labour.

Tape after the print (Yahoo ~13:35): ES back ~7,753–7,755 from the ~7,762 park. Cable ~1.350 from ~1.353. Euro ~1.160 from ~1.162. Gold ~$4,513. Brent still high-$94s (~$94.7). Dollar index ~99.04.

Thursday bought Waller and soft ADP. Today’s print puts Prices Paid at 72.6 and sticky oil back in the driver’s seat into the mid-September Fed. Cash open 14:30.

London just inherited Thursday's soft-labour equity bid. The hedge did not come with it.

Marks now (Yahoo, ~08:05 BST): ES ~7,756 (cash closed 7,748). Gold futures ~$4,509 after ~$4,516 into the open and yesterday's ~$4,558 poke. Silver ~$67.1. Brent ~$95.7, WTI ~$91.6. EUR ~1.163, GBP ~1.354, USD/JPY ~156.3, DXY ~99.0. US 10y still ~4.76%. VIX ~14.3. Nikkei finished around 65,021.

Equities are still babysitting Waller. Gold keeps fading. Oil is still the inflation floor under any dovish labour read. That is the second-order tape into Europe, not Destatis and not a fresh catalyst.

Calendar before the US print: Eurozone July retail sales ~10:00 UK (TE street ~+0.3% MoM after June's -0.3%). UK construction PMI ~09:30. Neither rewrites the Fed book. NFP is 13:30 UK. Street cluster roughly +55k to +65k after July's -23k, unemployment mostly seen steady near 4.1%, wages ~+0.3% MoM. Canada employment hits the same timestamp if you trade the dollar broadly.

Gold just bought back the London fade. Oil refused to come with it.

Marks now (Yahoo, ~09:22 BST): gold futures ~$4,528 after ~$4,509 mid-morning and a ~$4,517 London open. Brent ~$95.1 from the mid-$95s. WTI ~$90.7. ES still ~7,760 near Thursday's 7,748 cash close. EUR ~1.163, GBP ~1.354, USD/JPY ~156.3, DXY ~99.1. US 10y stuck at ~4.76%. FTSE ~10,819. VIX ~14.2.

So the 08:00 split rotated. Equities are still babysitting Waller. The hedge reclaimed about twenty dollars. Brent slipped off the mid-$95s, which softens the inflation floor under any dovish labour read. Quiet tape, not a fresh projectile.

Next London prints: UK construction PMI ~09:30 (July was 44.7), then Eurozone July retail ~10:00 (street ~+0.3% MoM after June's -0.3%). Neither rewrites the Fed book. NFP is 13:30 UK. Street roughly +55k to +65k after July's -23k, unemployment mostly seen steady near 4.1%, wages ~+0.3% MoM.

Eurozone retail just printed soft and the euro acted like nobody was home.

Eurostat, July: seasonally adjusted retail trade volume -0.6% MoM in the euro area and -0.4% in the EU. Street was looking for about +0.3% after June's originally reported -0.3%. June itself got revised to +0.2% MoM. Non-food (ex fuel) was the drag at -1.4% MoM. Food held +0.4%. Germany took the ugly seat at -3.4% MoM. Year-on-year the euro area is still +0.6%.

Earlier London: UK construction PMI 44.3 in August versus 45.5 expected and 44.7 in July. Still deep in contraction, just a touch softer than the street wanted. Cable did not flinch then either.

Marks (Yahoo, ~10:02 BST): EUR ~1.163, GBP ~1.353, USD/JPY ~156.4, DXY ~99.1, gold ~$4,522 (off the ~$4,528 reclaim), Brent ~$95.1, WTI ~$90.7, ES ~7,761, FTSE ~10,822, US 10y ~4.76%, VIX ~14.2.

So London gave you two soft demand prints before lunch and FX refused to price them as a regime change. The book is still US labour at 13:30 UK. Street cluster roughly +55k to +65k after July's -23k, unemployment mostly seen near 4.1%, wages ~+0.3% MoM.
