Minorities win through consistency.

••Moscovici's blue-green experiment:
→ Consistent minority calling blue slides "green" — converted majority
→ Inconsistent minority — zero influence


Three conditions for minority influence:
→ Consistency — unwavering position over time
→ Flexibility — open to discussion, not rigid
→ Commitment — visible sacrifice for the position


⚠️ Exam trap:
•Majority influence = compliance — public agreement, private disagreement

•Minority influence = conversion — genuine private belief change
Different processes. Different outcomes.

Why one person can change everything.

Every social movement started as a minority of one.

Moscovici proved it isn't numbers that create change.

It's consistency.

The person who never changes their position under pressure doesn't look stubborn.

They start looking certain.
Certainty is contagious.

Most people don't have strong opinions.
They have weak ones waiting to be replaced by someone who seems absolutely sure.

Consistency isn't stubbornness.
It's the most powerful social tool available to someone without authority.

Tip:
On positions that matter — don't adjust your view to reduce social friction. Consistency builds credibility. Flexibility signals uncertainty.

🧠 Attachment Theory — Bowlby (1969)

Attachment is not emotional dependency.
It is a biological survival system.

Four key concepts:
→ Proximity Seeking — distress drives physical closeness to attachment figure

→ Safe Haven — attachment figure as refuge under threat

→ Secure Base — attachment figure enables confident exploration

→ Separation Protest — distress at unwanted separation

Internal Working Model:
→ Early attachment creates a cognitive template
→ Shapes expectations of all future relationships
→ Secure attachment = others are trustworthy, self is worthy of love
→ Insecure attachment = template of unpredictability or rejection

⚠️ Exam trap:
Bowlby proposed monotropy — one primary attachment figure is most critical.
Ainsworth extended this — quality of caregiving
determines attachment style.

Why mental illness still carries shame that physical illness doesn't.

A broken leg gets sympathy.
Depression gets "just think positive."

The difference isn't severity.
It's visibility.

Szasz (1960) argued mental illness is a myth — a social label applied to deviant behaviour.

He was wrong about the myth part.
He was right that labelling shapes treatment.

Rosenhan proved it — once labelled, everything you do gets reinterpreted through the diagnosis.

The stigma isn't just cultural ignorance.
It's built into how diagnosis itself works.

Knowing this doesn't fix it.
But it explains why recovery requires more than treatment —
it requires reclaiming identity from the label.

No single definition works alone.

Biological Model
→ Abnormality = brain dysfunction, genetic predisposition, neurochemical imbalance
→ Treatment = medication
→ Limitation — ignores psychological and social factors entirely

Psychodynamic Model
→ Abnormality = unresolved unconscious conflict
→ Treatment = psychoanalysis
→ Limitation — unfalsifiable, limited empirical support

Behavioural Model
→ Abnormality = maladaptive learned behaviour
→ Treatment = unlearn through conditioning
→ Limitation — ignores cognition and biology

Cognitive Model
→ Abnormality = distorted thinking patterns
→ Treatment = CBT
→ Strongest empirical support currently

Diathesis-Stress Model
→ Disorder = genetic vulnerability + environmental trigger
→ Neither alone sufficient — both required
→ Most widely accepted integrative model today


⚠️ EXAM POINT

Diathesis = predisposition. Stress = trigger.
Both necessary. Neither is sufficient alone.

📍I — Input-Output Gating
