🇪🇺Szijjártó's willingness to act on behalf of Russia at the EU level may explain why Moscow is investing in keeping Viktor Orbán in power.

In the same conversation on August 30, 2024, immediately after discussing Ismailova's removal, Szijjártó reveals details of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting he attended the day before.

"It was crazy, you know, when Landsbergis said that we contribute to 12 percent of every rocket and missile" – Szijjártó tells Lavrov, referring to the then Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis.

In another conversation, the transcript of which we obtained, Szijjártó informs Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin that he is doing everything to repeal the sanctions package concerning „the shadow fleet” tankers. It also proposes assistance in removing Russian banks from sanctions lists. He asks for arguments to be prepared that he could use.
In an interview on June 30, 2025, he complains that the EU does not provide him with documents concerning 2Rivers, a company trading in Russian oil.

" I am doing everything to repeal this package. I have already removed 72 entities from the list, there were 128 of them. Dodje: If you can help me point out the negative effects on Hungary, I would be grateful."😂

💸Just an hour after returning to Budapest from St. Petersburg on August 30, 2024, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó receives a call from his Russian counterpart

The reason for Lavrov's call is a request: Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov wants his sister, Gulbahor Ismailova, to disappear from EU sanctions lists. Szijjártó promised help in this matter.

Usmanov, a Russian-Uzbek billionaire, has been described as one of Putin's favorite businessmen, having a particularly close relationship” with the Russian president.

"Listen, I'm calling at Alisher's request, he asked me to remind you that you were dealing with his sister's case"

"Yes, of course The thing is, together with the Slovaks, we are submitting a request to the European Union to delete it. We will submit it next week, [...] the matter will go on the agenda and we will do everything to remove it from the list"

Then in March, Slovakia and Hungary pressed for Usmanov himself to be removed from the sanctions lists as well.🫠
