It's time to get to know the next chairs! These wonderful ladies will accompany the DISEC committee to the VIII Model UN.
Which committee will you work on? What kind of agenda awaits you?
Anastasia: DISEC, Drafting a Middle Eastern Aerospace Arms Control Treaty
Arina: I and my colleague, Anastasia, work on Disarmament & International Security Committee. The agenda is "Drafting a Middle Eastern Aerospace Arms Control Treaty".
What inspired you to become the Chairman of the Committee? What goals do you set for yourself?
Anastasia: My interest in becoming a Committee Chair was shaped by my previous experience as a delegate, which showed me how engaging and meaningful a well-organized Model United Nations can be. Taking part in that model motivated me to contribute to this event from a different role this year. As Chair, I aim to create a supportive and engaging environment where delegates feel comfortable participating and exploring the agenda. My goal is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to challenge themselves and fully engage with this important topic.
Arina: I participated in the previous HSEIMUN as a Croatian delegate on Kosovo issues also in this committee. I had wonderful Chairs: this is what inspired me to become one. The guys answered all the questions, explained the procedures when you forget them, supported at all stages, and provide light atmosphere when everyone was already exhausted. I have similar goals for myself, and I'm sure that it is my responsibility to provide a comfortable environment for the delegates and our fruitful session!
Why is the relevance of the agenda that you will be discussing so important right now?
Anastasia: The relevance of this agenda is especially significant today due to the growing role of aerospace technologies in modern security and the increasing risks of their uncontrolled use. In the Middle East, where regional tensions remain high, the spread of advanced missile, drone, and space-related capabilities creates new challenges for stability and escalation management. Discussing aerospace arms control allows delegates to address these risks through dialogue, transparency, and confidence-building measures rather than confrontation. This agenda encourages a forward-looking discussion on how international cooperation can adapt to rapidly evolving security technologies. And of course, because it is really interesting!!
Arina: The relevance of this agenda is that right now there are no common rules in the Middle East for aerospace and military technologies like missiles and drones. Countries are developing these weapons, but there is no agreement on how to use them safely. This creates a big risk: one mistake or misunderstanding could quickly start a conflict. Our goal is to create rules that help countries communicate, avoid accidents, and build trust. That's why this topic is so important today.
What could you wish the future participants of the St. Petersburg HSE Model UN?
Anastasia: My main wish for future participants of the St. Petersburg HSE Model UN is not to be afraid. It may feel challenging or intimidating to start speaking and defending your position at first, but the sooner you engage in debate, the faster you will gain confidence and feel part of the process. I also encourage delegates to prepare carefully, understand the agenda, and think creatively about possible solutions. At the same time, do not forget to enjoy the experience - communicate with others, learn something new, ask questions, take photos with Chairs, and allow yourself to fully explore your potential.
Arina: Don't be afraid to be cringe and express yourself, this is a role-playing game, you need to show your skills in navigating the topic, defending your country's position, and creating a beneficial coalition! Please, learn the study guide in detail, and win awards for being the best delegate! It's all in your hands!
