Because of Italian fascism’s roots in revolutionary syndicalism (labor unionism) and revised Marxism, Mussolini never thought of himself as a rightist; that label was already reserved for the reactionary forces of the monarchy and the clergy.

According to the Encyclopedia Americana, Mussolini’s Fasci di Combattimento (combat groups) declared that they were trying to start a “leftist revolutionary program of action.” But like a typical politician, Mussolini wanted to appeal to a wider audience, and by 1922 he had begun to distance himself from rival Marxist and Socialist party competitors.

Nazism and unionism were virtually synonymous, where both German Communists and National Socialists attempted to outrival each other to gain working-class support. From day one, the Nazis saw themselves as the pro-labor party. In Mein Kampf, Hitler wrote:

[T]rade unions. . . are among the most important institutions in the economic life of the nation. Not only are they important in the sphere of social policy but also, and even more so, in the national political sphere. For when the great masses of a nation see their vital needs satisfied through a just trade unionist movement the stamina of the whole nation in its struggle for existence will be enormously reinforced thereby.

In “The Mystery of Fascism,” a former member of the Socialist Party of Great Britain, David Ramsay Steele, explained:

“Fascism began as a revision of Marxism by Marxists, a revision which developed in successive stages, so that these Marxists gradually stopped thinking of themselves as Marxists, and eventually stopped thinking of themselves as “socialists. They never stopped thinking of themselves as anti-liberal revolutionaries.”

Everyone argues about whether fascism is “right wing” or “left wing” like the label solves anything. This article does something simpler and more brutal: it grades regimes by how many of Marx’s 10 Communist manifesto planks they functionally fulfill. Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany end up adjacent to the communist states because totalitarian regimes converge on the same tools: property made contingent, credit and industry steered from the center, labor disciplined, education fused to state. The US barely overlaps and that gap matters in context.

Here I argue that the central issue is the precedent set by a U. S. cross border capture of a sitting Venezuelan head of state, framing it as a sovereignty and international law crisis grounded in the UN Charter’s prohibition on the use of force. I concede Venezuela’s corruption and governance failures while contending that U. S. sanctions materially worsened the economic collapse and migration surge, citing U. S. GAO findings on sanctions’ impacts and research linking sanctions policy to Venezuelan migration flows. I also challenge popular justifications for intervention, including oil as a strategic “need” and the conversion of criminal allegations into a blank check for coercion, warning that normalizing extraterritorial raids turns “law enforcement” into a cover for force. The article closes by advocating lawful prosecution, targeted accountability, and a Venezuelan led settlement rather than regime change by force.

This photograph records a convergence that post-war Western history worked hard to dissolve. Asanuma was not an accidental nationalist nor a late convert. Before the war he stood in substantive agreement with Ikki Kita on the core diagnosis of Japan’s crisis: liberal parliamentarianism as an exhausted form, capitalism as corrosive, and national sovereignty as the precondition for any genuine social reform. Where Kita expressed this through revolutionary theory, Asanuma carried the same views into mass politics, labor organization, and party leadership. Defeat in 1945 did not end that agreement of pan-Asian national socialism. Ikki Kita’s name became untouchable under occupation, but the underlying critique survived in Asanuma’s politics: resistance to American servitude, rejection of Soviet communidm, insistence on Japanese national socialism, and rejection of Atlanticist liberal norms as universal.

Reikichi Kita stands here as more of a connective proof to my assertions. Less radical than his brother yet deeply embedded in the same intellectual world. Educated, parliamentary, and interpretive, he embodied the survival of Imperial Japanese fascist ideas that could not be executed outright but also could not be erased. Seen this way, the image is not incidental. It documents ideological continuity across regime change. It shows that the ideas of Imperial Japan did not vanish in 1945 but reappeared, more moderate looking, and reorganized, in people like Asanuma until even that lineage was violently killed in 1960.
