Types of Istikhārah

Istikhārah is seeking the choice from Allah. Its highest form is what the Prophet ﷺ guided to in the hadith of Jābir, reported by al-Bukhārī and others, in his saying: “If any of you is concerned about a matter, let him pray two rakʿahs other than the obligatory prayer, then let him say: O Allah, I seek the best from You by Your knowledge…”

Istikhārah is of two types:

- The first is istikhārah composed of both salah and duā', as mentioned in the ḥadīth of Jābir.
- The second is istikhārah that consists of duā' alone.

Reports have been narrated about this, though they are not authentic. However, it has been established from a group of salaf that istikhārah by supplication alone is permissible, and the jurists of every school have agreed that when a servant asks his Lord for the best outcome, he has indeed performed istikhārah.

Thus, one may perform istikhārah with the supplication transmitted in the ḥadīth of Jābir or with another wording. For example, if he supplicates saying: “O Allah, I seek the best from You by Your knowledge…” until the end of the well‑known supplication, without offering prayer, it is valid. And if he performs istikhārah with another supplication, such as: “O Allah, choose for me and select for me,” (Allahumma khir lī wakhtar lī) that is also valid.

فالاستخارة كما عرفت هي طلب الخيرة من الله، وأعلى ما تكون به : ما أرشد إليه النَّبِيُّ صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلم في حديث جابر عند البخاري وغيره في قوله: «إِذَا هَمَّ أَحَدُكُمْ بالْأَمْرِ فَلْيَرْكَعُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ غَيْرِ الفَرِيضَةِ، ثُمَّ لِيَقُلُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ .. الحديث.
..فالاستخارة نوعان:
أحدهما استخارة مركبة من صلاة ودعاء، وهي المذكورة في حديث جابر.
والآخر : استخارة هي دعاء فقط.

وروي في هذا أحاديث لا تصح، لكن ثبت عن جماعة من السلف الاستخارة بالدعاء فقط، وأطبق عليه الفقهاء في كل مذهب من أن العبد إذا دعا ربه بالخيرة صار مستخيرًا.
وله أن يستخير دعاء بالوارد في حديث جابر أو في غيره، فلو دعا بقوله: (اللهم إني أستخيرك بعلمك..) إلى تمام الذكر المعروف من غير صلاة جاز ذلك، وإن استخار بدعاء آخر كقوله: (اللهم خِر لي واخْتَر لي) جاز أيضًا.

It is recommended to say when the rain falls: “O Allah, make it a beneficial downpour.”

And after it has rained: “We have been showered by the grace and mercy of Allah.”

And if it becomes excessive and harm is feared: “O Allah, around us and not upon us. O Allah, upon the hills, the mountains, the valleys, and where the trees grow.”

يُسنُّ عند نزولِ المطرِ قولُ: "اللَّهمَّ صيِّبًا نافعًا".
وبعد نزوله قولُ: "مُطِرنا بفضل اللهِ ورحمتِه".
وإذا كثُر وخِيف ضررُه قولُ: "اللَّهمَّ حوالينا ولا علينا، اللَّهمَّ على الآكام، والظِّرابِ، وبُطونِ الأوديةِ، ومنابتِ الشجرِ".

Fasting the Sacred Months

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Allah, ‘Al-Muharram’."

His ﷺ saying, "The month of Allah, Al-Muharram," can carry two meanings - as mentioned by Abu Al-Abbas Ibn Taymiyyah in his explanation of Al-Umdah:

The first: It refers to the month following Dhul-Hijjah, which is named Muharram.

The second: It refers to all the sacred months, which are four, as explicitly stated by Allah: "..of them four are sacred." Three of them are consecutive; Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram and one is separate; Rajab.

The second interpretation is the opinion of Ibn Majah in his Sunan and Al-Bayhaqi in Al-Sunan Al-Kubra. Ibn Majah entitled the chapter: "Fasting in the Sacred Months " and Al-Bayhaqi entitled it: "The Virtue of Fasting in the Sacred Months."

This is known from the practice of the Salaf, as it also authentically narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to fast the sacred months. Abdul Razzaq narrated this in his Musannaf with a sound chain of transmission.

واستدل على ذلك بالحديث المخرج في الصحيح أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ:) أَفْضَلُ الصِّيَامِ بَعْدَ رَمَضَانَ: شَهْرُ اللَّهِ المُحَرَّمُ). وقوله صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : شَهْرُ اللهِ المُحَرَّمُ يحتمل معنيين - كما ذكره أبو العباس ابن تيمية الحفيد في شرح العمدة - :
الأول: أن المراد بذلك: الشهر الذي يلي ذا الحجة، المسمى بشهر (محرم).
والآخر: أن المراد بذلك: الأشهر الحرم جميعًا؛ وهي أربعة؛ كما في صريح قول الله عَزَّوَجَلَّ: ﴿ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ﴾ [التوبة : ٣٦] ، ثلاثة سرد، وواحد فرد؛ فأما السرد: فذو القعدة، وذو الحجة، ومحرم، وأما الفرد: فرجب.

وقد اختار القول الثاني ابن ماجه في سننه والبيهقي في السنن الكبير» بما ترجما به على الحديث؛ فقد ترجم عليه الأول: "باب صيام أشهر الحرم"، وترجم الثاني: "باب في فضل الصوم في أشهر الحرم"، وهو المعروف عن السلف، فقد صح عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما أنه كان يصوم أشهر الحرم. أخرجه عنه عبد الرزاق في «المصنف» بسند صحيح.

It is established by ash-Shafi’i in Al-Umm and Ahmad in Al-Musnad that when Umar رضي الله عنه used to see the Kaaba, he would to say: “O Allah, You are as-Salam (One free from defects and Source of security), and from You comes Salam (safety from all evi). So, make us live, our Lord, in safety.”

ثبت عند الشافعي في الأم وأحمد في المسند أن عمر رضي الله عنه كان إذا رأى البيت (الكعبة) قال: اللهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ، فَحَيِّنَا رَبَّنَا بِالسَّلَامِ.

Acquire light by sending Salah upon the Prophet ﷺ so that Allah may send Salah upon you, as mentioned in the hadith from him: “Whoever sends one Salah upon me, Allah sends ten Salahs upon him in return.”

And through Allah's Salah, the soul is brought out from darkness into light, as He, the Exalted, said: “It is He who sends Salah upon you, as do His angels, so that He may bring you out of darkness into light.”

اقتبسوا نورًا بالصَّلاة على النَّبيِّ ﷺ؛ ليصلِّي الله عليكم، ففي الحديث عنه: "من صلَّى عليَّ صلاةً صلَّى الله عليه بها عشرًا"، وبصلاة الله تخرج النَّفس من الظَّلام إلى النُّور؛ كما قال عزَّ وجلَّ: ﴿هو الذي یُصلِّی عليكم وملـٰۤىِٕكتُه ليُخرجكم من الظُّلمـٰت إِلى النُّور﴾.

Beware, Lest your Knowledge leads you to Fire!

Among the diversions of the hearts away from what benefits them is the lack of interest shown by many students of knowledge in this matter (heart softeners, biographies, stories of the salaf and their admonitions); they neither engage in it nor give it due attention.

In earlier times, in gatherings of knowledge—such as in the lands of Najd—Kitāb az-Zuhd by Imam Ahmad would be regularly read. The senior scholars would not discontinue its recitation; rather, when they completed it, they would begin it again in the study circle, and this would continue in that manner.

As for students of knowledge today, they often claim that the Kitāb az-Zuhd contains many Israeliyyat, weak narrations, and objectionable stories; therefore, it should not be studied, nor should time be wasted on it.

The reality, however, is that the loss lies in such statements they have adopted—opinions they devised themselves, not taken from the scholars—leading them to turn away from such beneficial works.

The intent of this brief reminder is that you—O student of knowledge—should have a share of these meanings that guide and direct you. If you are deprived of them, then you are in grave danger. For the Qur’an guides some people, leading them to Paradise and serving as their leader; while others take it in a way that pushes them on to their necks into the Fire of Hell!

Whoever observes the condition of people will recognize this clearly.

Thus, a student of knowledge must beware that his portion of knowledge is not merely its name and outward form. Rather, his share of knowledge should be its true essence of faith and divine guidance—guidance that causes him to find intimacy with Allah, to delight in conversing with Him, and to see restraining himself within circles of learning as an act of devotion by which he draws closer to Allah, thereby increasing him in faith.

ومِن صَرْفِ القلوب عمّا ينفعها: زهد كثير من طلبة العلم – كما سلف – في هذا الأمر،
وعدم قيامهم به، ولا رفع الرأس إليه.

وقد كان يُقرأ في حلق العلم فيما سلف في البلاد التجدية – مثلاً – كتاب الزهد للإمام أحمد، وكان عامة الأشياخ الكبار لا يقطعون قراءته؛ فإنهم إذا انتهوا منه قرأوه مرة أخرى في حلقة الدرس، وهكذا.

وأما طلبة العلم اليوم: فإنهم يرون أن كتاب «الزهد» فيه كثير من الإسرائيليات والأحاديث الضعاف والحكايات المنكرة؛ فلا يُشتغل به ولا يُضيع الوقت في مثله.

والحقيقة: أن الضياع في مقالتهم هذه التي التحلوها، وأخذوها من رؤوسهم ولم يأخذوها من العلماء؛ فزهدوا في مثل هذه الأشياء!

والمقصود من هذه الإلماعة: أن يكون لك – يا طالب العلم – حظ من هذه المعاني التي ترشدك وتهديك، وأنك إذا خلوت منها فإنك على خطر شديد؛ فإن القرآن يهدي ناسًا يقودهم إلى الجنة فيكون لهم إمامًا، ويأخذ به ناس فيزخ بأقفيتهم إلى نار جهنم.

ومن شاهد أحوال الناس عرف ذلك.

فينبغي أن يحذر طالب العلم أن يكون حظه من العلم اسمه ورسمه، بل يكون حظه من العلم حقيقته الإيمانية، وهدايته الربانية، التي تجعله يأنس بالله عز وجل، ويتلذذ بمناجاته، ويرى أن حبس نفسه في حلق التعليم قربة يتقرب بها إلى الله سبحانه وتعالى، فتزيده إيمانًا.

O callers to Allah: Do not weaken because of the small number of those who respond to you. The honor of calling to Allah, and the elevated rank of its people in this world and the Hereafter, is not tied to the number of responders. The Prophet ﷺ said: “A prophet will come with no one with him”—meaning that he called, yet no one responded to him. Still, he lived as a Prophet, died as a Prophet, and will be resurrected as a Prophet.

‏أيُّها الدُّعاة؛ لا تضعفوا لقلَّة عدد من استجاب لكم، فشرف الدَّعوة إلى الله، ورفعة منزلة أهلها في الدُّنيا والآخرة؛ لا يرتبط بعدد المستجيبين، قال النَّبيُّ ﷺ: "ويأتي النَّبيُّ وليس معه أحدٌ"؛ أي أنَّه دعا ولم يستجب له أحدٌ، فعاش (نبيًّا)، ومات (نبيًّا)، ويُبعث (نبيًّا).
