🇬🇧 Marcus Aurelius
If is the pessimist telling you that life is a scam, Marcus Aurelius is the pragmatist telling you: "Yes, life is hard; now get up and do your job."
It is the core of Stoicism applied by the most powerful man of his time (the Emperor of Rome).
The World is Opinion (Your Mind is Your Reality)
For Marcus Aurelius, nothing is good or bad in itself, but only by how you interpret it. "The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts." If someone insults you, it only hurts if you decide that insult has value. Remove the opinion, and you remove the harm.
Control What You Can, Ignore the Rest
Divide the World into two buckets:
- Bucket A (What you DO control)
Your judgments, your intentions, your actions. This is where you must put all your energy.
- Bucket B (What you DO NOT control)
The weather, the economy, what others think of you, death, the past. Worrying about this is madness.
Memento Mori (Remember You Will Die)
It’s not macabre; it’s an alarm clock. Marcus Aurelius told himself: "You could leave life right now; let that determine what you do, say, and think." If you’re going to be a titan or a giant in your story, let it be today, because tomorrow you could be dust.
Amor Fati (Love Your Fate)
Accept what happens to you as if you had requested it yourself. If you face a war, a plague, or a traitor, it is material to train your virtue. Everything that happens to you is "fuel" for your inner fire; the bigger the obstacle, the stronger the flame burns.
The Inner Citadel
Marcus Aurelius believed that within everyone there is a spiritual fortress where no one can enter unless you open the door. You can be in the middle of a battle (literal or figurative), but your mind can remain calm if you retreat into that "Inner Citadel."
Citizen of the Cosmopolis
Unlike the nationalism of the , Marcus Aurelius saw himself as part of a living organism called Logos (universal reason). We are all threads of the same fabric. Helping another is helping yourself because we are all "members of one body."
Do not complain, do not make excuses, fulfill your duty, and keep your mind clean. The Whole is change, life is a short battle, and fame is just noise that will soon be forgotten.
Marcus Aurelius is the user manual for the Operator who does not want the parasite to hack his state of mind. If the parasite cannot modify your judgment, it cannot install its fear software. If you control your opinion, you control your Universe.
