Whether or not someone achieves their aims is mostly by a question of luck.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
People have long been arguing about the contributory factors for success, with a certain school of thought mentioning luck as the primary ingredient. Indeed, it is luck whose absence or even shortage may make the goals stay goals despite the efforts taken. However, in my opinion, it is rational to consider serendipity of least importance given the integrity of other factors such as hard work and dedication.
On the one hand, there is no doubt that favorable circumstances help a person to achieve their goals, ultimately becoming successful. Undoubtedly, luck is something people tend to remember when they were close to success but could not achieve it because of circumstances beyond their control. In many cultures, luck is synonymous with the word fate, in cases, when a person with little expertise can outperform their professional counterpart. A vivid manifestation of this is known to be Alexander Fleming or Christopher Columbus, who managed to cement their names in history thanks to the endeavors they had been unaware of.
That having been said, given the fact that the success is attributable to several, if not many, factors, it is wrong to consider luck as the sole aspect. Firstly, a random action, which might be further classified as luck, could have been absent, highlighting the importance of efforts. Albeit too philosophical, there is no sense in relying on luck unless a person takes basic actions required. If the opposite were true, almost everybody, especially the lazy, would have already become successful. Just like predators achieve success once they spot their prey and commence chasing it, one needs to do their best, instead of resorting to luck. From a general perspective, even those historical figures that were mentioned above, originally, had to put effort into preparing for the voyage, in the case of Columbus, or investigating different organisms upon discovering penicillin.
Apart from taking action, one needs to be persistent in achieving one's goal and becoming successful. This can be better explained by the fact that everybody can start a journey, but not all of them can manage to make it to the end. By going through numerous trials and errors, a person inadvertently gains experience that they may use to further consolidate their efforts. Were it not for consistency, a lot of achievements, be it personal— Ronaldo’s being awarded Golden Ball for several times in a row—or societal—space missions like Apollo 11—would not have simply taken place. Notably, history accounts for a countless number of achievements that could be classified as success, at the base of which perseverance and commitment lay. Therefore, it is common to come across statements highlighting that luck, if it exists, comes to those who are prepared.
To conclude, everyone wants to be successful in different regards, though their opinions diverge when it comes to the factors that lead to it. There is no doubt that a groundbreaking achievement could not have been revealed to the world if there had been no happenstance. Nonetheless, luck is likely to be of temporary importance because of factors like effort and commitment to the goal without which, it would be nothing more than a mere incident.
