Morning!

After doing some deep diving into Dubai Chocolate and the hype around it, I put together this short piece about it. I'm going to be using this in my next podcast but figured that ye might learn something in the meantime.

The more I read into Dubai chocolate, the more interesting the story became. I learned so much about the people behind it, the real people behind it, and the chocolate industry as a whole. In fact, I already want to plan another podcast about the chocolate industry because that is VERY interesting and very corrupt.

One of my best friends is a farmer and she just sent me this cool video of the new lambs on her farm.

In this video I'm talking about Dubai Chocolate - have you seen or heard of this?

I recently did a bit of research about Dubai chocolate, I looked into the history of it, the ingredients, and why it's so popular. I'm excited to share that in an upcoming podcast.

Is it worth the price? No idea!
Do they have a good marketing team? 100% yes.
Will I be purchasing a bar of Dubai chocolate? Fuck no!

Whenever I see something with Dubai on it, I assume it's going to be a gimmick. I assume the word Dubai is placed on it to appeal to people as Dubai has an air of affluence, status, or imperialism associates with it.

Anyways, some people will drop $40 on a bar of chocolate - I will not.

(There was a woman in Canada who made her own Dubai style chocolate - she sold each bar for over $100 - people are crazy)

What can I say? I'm now a meal-prepper!

Got these silicon molds recently and they have 100% changed the game of food for me. I am OBSESSED!

No more wasting time cooking daily, no more dishes daily, no more stressing about what to eat, no more being tired and NOT having anything to whip up - I love my new silicon molds for meal prepping.

Any meal preppers here?
Would you like to eat what may look like space food?
Would you like to take out a block of frozen food in the morning and devour it by evening?

I highly recommend this style of meal prepping to anyone who wants to save time, eat healthy, and ensure there is always something good, delicious, and healthy on hand!

Happy Monday!

I am in love with the great outdoors and living in the bush. Not too long ago, I spent time in the bush helping my friends out with wood.

Myself and Harry went to find some dead trees. He felled the trees and cut them into giant logs and that's when I hauled the logs back to the woodshed by skidoo.

When we finished, he cut the logs into smaller rounds so we could split them and get them prepped for going into the stove.

In this video, I'm first stacking the rounds and then I'm splitting the rounds using a wood splitter. This kind of work is tough and exhausting but I'll take it over a desk job any day of the week.

Even though it was about -20 in this video, I'm sweating and I even had steam rising from me. This part of the job is quite repetitive but it is what it is. You just stack, split, chuck, and repeat.

All in all, we call this Doing Wood. So, I spent a few days in the bush doing wood!

I have turned one of my B2 academic English lessons into a short grammar focused podcast talking about giving strong advice in English.

This one is for the nerds, for the people who want to speak or understand formal English, for the people who loooooooove grammar!

I do not recommend this style of English in a bar, with friends, or in casual conversation. However, if you have a tough situation at work that you need to deal with it, this is for you.
If you need to ask a person to leave a bar because they are drunk, this is for you.
If you need to politely ask a person to shut the fuck up, this is for you.

By listening to this, you will learn new English, you will learn a new more formal way to give advice, and you will see that whilst grammar is not the be all and end all of a language, knowledge of grammar is a powerful tool to have.

This week I've been looking at collocations with prepositions with my B2 English class.

Rather than learning 'Hopeless at' or 'Combine with' - we learn from the preposition backwards.

We try to find different adjectives or verbs that go with a particular preposition. This will help us kill many birds with one stone.

Here are some examples we came up:
Concentrate on (verb)
Work on (verb)
Insist on (verb)
Dependent on (adjective)
Based on (adjective)
Short on (adjective)
Be engaged in (adjective)
Be invested in (adjective)
Run into (verb)
Turn into (verb)

Once we find some of these, we try to make sentences relevant to our own lives to help us remember them.

Examples:
1. My neighbor was nice but then turned into a complete dickhead.
2. I'm short on patience with my students, they are the laziest motherfuckers in the world. If there was work in the bed, they'd sleep on the floor.
3. Even though I'm not a fan of the show, I've invested so much time into it, I need to know how it ends.

A lot of money, like a huge amount of money!

I wasted a boatload of money on books in college, the rest I spent wisely on weed and boos.

In just 12 days of conflict, the US spent over $500million on missiles. Freedom!

If we could just spend a tiny fraction of the boatload of money directed towards weapons, we could solve a lot of problems.

I’m not asking for a boatload of money, just enough so people can get medicine for free, jeeeez!

You’re upset that your government is spending a boatload of money on a foreign war again? Well… is there anything you can do about it

If I found $20 on the street, id be tempted to take it. If I found a boatload of money on the street, I'm not sure I would take it. Why do you think that is?

In the movie No Country for Old Men, he finds a boatload of movie. He probably wishes he hadn't found it.

If you want to understand high-level fluent English, you need to understand how words sound when they are next to each other.


TIP: When a word ends in a vowel sound AND is followed by a vowel, they join together with either a /Y/ or a /W/ sound.

Here’s the answers:
1. I didn’t see it clearly.
2. The idea agreed with our goals.
3. Let’s try again tomorrow.
4. She arrived early in the morning.
5. It’s hard to stay awake in long meetings.
6. He had coffee and cocaine for breakfast.

Example: Early in
• What is the last sound in early? E
• What does the next word start with? I
• These two words are joined with the Y sound.

✍️: She arrived early in the morning
🗣: She arrived earlyin the morning (these are connected with the Y sound)

You don’t need to worry about saying words like this, that will happen naturally in time. However, you do need to understand words like this because fluent English speakers do talk like this.

I did a brief scan on the internet for stories about deepfake, here are some:

🤮Netherby resident William Hamish Yeates, 19, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with eight counts of creating or altering sexual material without consent — a federal offence introduced in 2024 to combat deepfake pornography.

🧘The Delhi High Court has taken a significant step in safeguarding the personality rights of renowned Yoga guru Ramdev. In an interim order, the court has barred the unauthorized use of his name, image, voice, and other attributes across all formats and mediums, including AI-generated content and deepfake videos.

⚖️Kolakowski, who serves on California’s Alameda County Superior Court, soon realized why: The video had been produced using generative artificial intelligence. Though the video claimed to feature a real witness — who had appeared in another, authentic piece of evidence — Exhibit 6C was an AI “deepfake,” Kolakowski said.

Morning English learners,

Here is another project I'm working on with my friend Kate. We sat down to record a general conversation about AI. We have one episode up right now and the next one is out tomorrow. Would love if ye gave it a listen.

Lots of useful English in it, I bet ye will learn something. This episode talks about the history of AI, Deepfakes (Kate has a horror story), and how we are all getting duped by AI time and time again. In the next episode I talk about how I use AI to learn Japanese, super useful tool IF you know how to use it correctly.

🔥I think the genie is out of the bottle in terms of AI and there is no going back, however, that does not mean we have to embrace it.
🔥I got duped by AI when I saw a picture I thought was real.
🔥We are now at the stage where Deepfake videos are more realistic and have come a long way since that first video of Will Smith eating spaghetti.

What do you call it when you have a wash in the sink and not the shower?

There are many ways, but one way is: A Hooker Shower!

Is this slang? Yes.
Is this vulgar? Yes.
Is this crude? Yes.
Is this real English? Yes.
Should I say this around everyone? God, NO!

A hooker shower is a very crude way of saying you had a wash in the sink and not a real shower.

Here are some alternatives:
- A bird bath
- A quick wash
- A sink wash
- A quick rinse
- A PTA wash (pits, tits, ass)
- A Pits n Bits wash

Here are some examples:
- I was driving cross country so I just had some hooker showers at gas stations.
- Time for a quick rinse!
- I didn't have time for a shower, just a good old pits n bits wash.
- Please don't have a hooker shower before your job interview, have a real shower.

So folks, if you didn't know, now you do!

As for me, I'm more of a traditionalist and have a regular shower. However, when I'm in the bush or a cabin, a hooker shower is all one needs 😆

Let's talk a little bit about food in China!

In Canada and Ireland we have Chinese food, I thought Chinese food was delicious. But Chinese Chinese food - knocks everything I've ever had out of the park!

My favorite breakfast was dumplings and fried yak milk - something I never knew was a thing before going to Lijiang.

The best noodles I had were from the street cart in Chengdu, just a random dude on the street cooking up a storm.

The one food I didn't try was insects - my stomach couldn't handle it and nearly turned when I saw them.

When ordering food, I used my phone. Not only to translate but also to pay. I would often translate food and have a vague idea of what I was actually going to eat.

Hot Pot - Go to Chengdu and get some REAL hot pot! Do you know what hot pot is?

I had a mantra over there, say 'Yes' to anything that is offered (except insects). This meant that I would just nod 'Yes' whenever they shopkeeper said something.

Can't wait to go back and get more!

Alright, let's practice our understanding and fluency.

There's me (Irish/Canadian) and there is Lizzie (Scottish) and we have a regular conversation, well it's not entirely regular but we have a conversation.

I guide this conversation by asking her some basic questions with some follow up questions.

1. What is your name?
2. What is unique about your home country?
3. When is the last time you ate out and were left disappointed?
4. What's the best thing about being an English teacher?

From these four basic questions, I let the English language lesson emerge. At the end of the conversation, at about 17 minutes, I dive into the vocabulary of the conversation (you've seen some of the videos before).

Natural Vocab Lesson:
- Roadside check
- Calorific
- Take a person (out)
- Underground/black market
- Overpriced for what it is
- Bad with
- Apocalypse
- To flick a switch
- Out of touch with
- Car-dominated
- I don't know what it's like in...

Cold Idioms:
- Cold as ice
- The cold shoulder
- Cold-hearted
- Blood run cold

Even if you don't use these in your daily life, you best know what they mean. I often tell the story of how my blood ran cold when my wife and I met a man in the mountains.

It was in the depth of winter on a remote forest service road. We pulled over to put chains on our car and as it happened, his car was stuck right where we were stopping to chain up. There was no easy way to get out of there, couldn't go forward, couldn't go back. I spoke to him as my wife got the chains out and attached them to the wheels. I spoke to him to try and keep him distracted and to try and gauge what was going to happen.

It wasn't too bad until he said a few ominous things and I noticed he had a gun on the ground. A gun, a remote forest service road, winter conditions, and a man in distress is a very dangerous combination; It was at that moment my blood ran cold.

Good morning from the bush!

Spending a few days up in the bush helping my bud out with wood.

My friends who live in the mountains use wood to heat their home. So, they need to collect the wood. Of course you can buy wood, but it's very expensive. Rather than spending a bunch of dollars on wood, we spend a bunch of energy felling trees, hauling them back to the woodshed, and then we split them so they can fit into the stove. It's tough work, but I love it!

The first pic is me after gathering a bunch of wood yesterday. It was a little frosty, but nothing I can't handle.

Visa-free: You don't need a visa to enter
Export: Send products to another country
Import: Bring in products from another country
Trade deal: An arrangement with another country in terms of trade, we had deals with our neighbor but now they are gone bat-shit crazy so we got new trade deals!

I've had to post some of these on YouTube and not here because the files are too big and take too long to send. Anyways, here is a great natural phrase in English:

It was overpriced for what it was |
This is a very high level phrase for talking about something you purchased. In this video, Lizzie is talking about going to a restaurant and being left disappointed because the food was bland. She paid a lot of money for it and was not pleased.

You could use this for ANYTHING that you pay money for:
- I recently paid for premium economy on my flight - it was overpriced for what it it was. Nothing fancy, just a little big more legroom.
- That hotel and spa was overpriced for what it is. The rooms were dingy, the pools were a little dirty, the staff were rude, I have no idea why we paid so much!
- The concert was overpriced for what it was. The singer wasn't even singing, they were lip-syncing! I will never pay that much for a concert ticket again.

To be honest, I haven't eaten out in a restaurant in ages because they are generally overpriced for what they are. I can whip up delicious food at home no problem - why waste money eating out?

To increase the price of something suddenly, dramatically, and in a way that will piss people off
1. Airline tickets are usually hiked around Christmas or other holidays.
2. My landlord tried to hike my rent by 20%, however, we have protections so he can suck a lemon.
3. Why is everything becoming more and more expensive? If they keep hiking prices, we won't be able to afford jack-shit!
4. The cost of one beer has hiked by more than 50% in the last five years... has my salary increased? No. Typical.

Good Thursday morning,

As some of you know, I am actually a real English teacher who has a professional job.

This means that I actually go to a location and teach English and help people in real life. The English I teach at my job and my style of teaching is obviously very different to the English I teach and how I teach online/social media.

ANYWAYS, I'm going to be posting some of my materials from my 'REAL' teaching job here. So, be prepared to learn some academic, formal, more guided/controlled English at times - Don't worry, I'll still be posting stupid shit!

This week in class we are covering Gerunds and Infinitives. I'll probably record a presentation for this but in the meantime, here's a little bit of work on Gerund and Infinitives.
