Reconciling Iran Nuclear Claims: Gabbard, Trump, and the Dirty Bomb Reality

For decades, critics have mocked the claim that Iran was "two weeks from having a nuclear bomb." Yet, here we are in 2026, and the Islamic regime still has not produced a functioning nuclear weapon.

DNI Tulsi Gabbard testified in March of 2025 that U. S. intelligence assesses "Iran is not building a nuclear weapon" and Supreme Leader Khamenei had not reauthorized the program suspended in 2003.

President Trump, meanwhile, has argued that Iran's enriched uranium stockpile and advancing missile program were a growing threat in two ways: It presents a regional danger today, and provides a pathway to ICBMs and full nuclear deterrence against the US tomorrow.

These statements are not as contradictory as they appear at first glance.

Iran mastered fissile material production decades ago. Its 60% enriched uranium stockpile at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan gives a breakout time of days to weeks for enough 90% weapons-grade material for multiple bombs. But building a functional nuclear weapon requires more than just uranium enrichment. It requires a tested implosion design, a reliable triggering mechanism, and integration with a delivery system. U. S. intelligence has long assessed that Iran lacks these abilities.

Tulsi Gabbard's view reflects that narrow intelligence snapshot: there is no current bomb-building capability, and no immediate ICBM threat to the U. S. homeland.

President Trump's perspective is broader and strategic. Uranium enrichment, along with a robust missile arsenal, already gave Iran regional leverage. Short and medium-range missiles can reach Gulf states or Israel. Those missiles also serve as a shield against potential aggression from the West while Tehran works on closing the remaining technology gaps—weaponization and longer missile range. The result is a system of deterrence that protects their growing nuclear program from aggression.

Let’s add another reality: Iran has long had the ingredients needed to build a dirty bomb—a radiological dispersal device using conventional explosives coupled with radioactive material. Catherine Herridge's reporting on the 2020 Al-Asad air base attack by Iran points to the appearance of anomalous radioactive isotopes, suggesting that at least one such "dirty warhead" was used by the Islamic regime in the past.

If a dirty bomb has been used by Iran, then the "two weeks away" argument loses its persuasive power. Iran has already weaponized its radioactive material production.

Tulsi Gabbard and President Trump are addressing complementary risks. The DNI is responsible for national security threat assessments that have an immediate impact on the US, while the President’s responsibilities are global and long-term.

As our Commander in Chief, he is responsible for determining what is and is not an imminent threat, and whether or not to take action he deems necessary to protect the safety and security of our troops, the American people and our country.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence is responsible for helping coordinate and integrate all intelligence to provide the President and Commander in Chief with the best information available to inform his decisions.

After carefully reviewing all the information before him, President Trump concluded that the terrorist Islamist regime in Iran posed an imminent threat and he took action based on that conclusion.

Around 300 Basij commanders and field officials were killed in a wave of overnight strikes on key command and operational centers of Iran’s Basij forces, Iran International has learned.

The strikes appeared to hit the logistics and command structure of a force long used to suppress dissent and confront anti-government protests.

In one of the most critical attacks, a Basij support unit’s repair and maintenance center was hit. The site housed hundreds of vehicles and motorcycles used in street operations and neighborhood patrols. Initial reports said the fleet was destroyed.

Facilities linked to the Mohammad Rasoulollah Corps, the IRGC unit responsible for the greater Tehran area, were struck.

The Imam Hadi security unit, a strategic command center in Tehran, was also heavily damaged.

The Imam Ali security battalions, which have played a central role in cracking down on protests, also suffered heavy personnel and equipment losses.

The Pentagon's top AI officer live demonstrated the software the US military is using right now to select and destroy targets inside Iran.

Cameron Stanley is the Department of War's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer and he personally built Project Maven back in 2021.

The system is called Maven Smart System.​

Maven takes satellite imagery, drone footage, intercepted communications and over 150 other intelligence feeds and fuses them all into a single screen.

One operator sits down and the software tells them what to hit, how to hit it, and which weapon to use.​

The military used to need eight or nine separate systems just to find and strike a single target.​

Maven replaced all of that with one platform.​

A Palantir architect put a number on it and said that tasks which once required 2,000 intelligence officers now require only 20 people.​

Stanley walked through the entire process live on stage for the audience to see.​

He clicked left, clicked right, and clicked left again, and a blip on a map became a confirmed detection.​

That detection entered a targeting workflow where the software automatically recommended which weapon should be used to prosecute the target.​

He said the system gets better every single day because Palantir updates it based on real-time feedback from operators in the field.​

Many will point to trumps actions as eroding the advantage the U. S. has in the form of a broad network of alliances in contrast to China which has only a handful of highly transactional relationships.

This is a false framing.

Because of an ever worsening dynamic of immigration, fiscal negligence, growing debt, eroding military capacity, political polarization and demographics the allies have systematically become more flaky.

Recent experiences with the UK and Spain in the early stages of the Iranian operation are just one of countless examples.

And because as we enter an increasingly dangerous stage of geopolitics we have to strategically plan well in advance if there is uncertainty as to whether and “ally” will step up when needed due to the aforementioned domestic considerations then for all intents and purposes they are not an ally they are a drain on resources.

A drain because we have to consider second order consequences of our actions, a drain because we have to worry about their feelings, a drain because we have to increase our exposure when sharing intelligence.

That is why the truth that “experts” seem loathe to admit is that a broad network of half-assed commitments is inferior to a smaller but dense network of “whatever the fuck you need, we gotchya”.

Israel is demonstrating that. Japan is demonstrating that. Saudi and UAE will soon demonstrate that.

The UK used to demonstrate that but will now need to be regime changed...as will Canada.

But the Jake Sullivans of the world talk in terms of allies as friends because when he visits Brussels and London they kiss his ass.

But he knows deep down if he asked them to stand alongside the U. S. to defend Taiwan they’d (very politely) tell him to fuck off. Liabilities. Not assets.

Before everyone gets carried away with the bombing of Kharg Island, there are a few things to know:

- It's got a military presence like everything else in Iran. That's what was struck. They'll most likely get replaced ASAP from the mainland.

- It also has 55 crude oil storage tanks that can capacitate over 34 million barrels. They're most likely unscathed.

- There was a VLCC supertanker today that was wrapping up her 48h loading there of 2 million barrels. A couple of smaller tankers loaded or were just berthed on the east side of the island.

- Kharg Island has been loading tankers non-stop since the war broke out two weeks ago.

- If folks here start posting satellite data showing fires on the island to imply destruction of the oil facilities, then compare them against old images because there's gas flaring happening there daily. - Although the island has some offshore oil production, the bulk of the oil actually derives from the mainland via multiple pipelines. The island first began exporting oil during the summer of 1960 and was built to capacitate 7 million barrels per day in exports, to reflect the potential in oil production. Iran hit 6.6 Mbpd in production back in 1976.

- According to our tracking, the island accounted for 96% of the Iran's crude oil exports during 2025; or 1.538 Mbpd of the 1.605 Mbpd total.

- When Saddam Hussein raided the island numerous times forty years ago and destroyed a number of storage tanks, Kharg Island was still able to export over 1.5 million barrels per day. Here's a 40 year old sat pic we keep handy.

President Trump said that seizing Iran’s Kharg Island fuel depot is not currently a priority — but he could quickly change his thinking.

The small island, located about 16 miles off Iran’s coast in the Persian Gulf, is the loading site for about 90% of the Islamic Republic’s fuel exports.

“It’s not high on the list, but it’s one of so many different things, and I can change my mind in seconds,” Trump told Fox News Radio host Brian Kilmeade in an interview that aired Friday morning.
