The Definite (المعرفة) and Indefinite (النكرة) Noun (Part 1)

In Arabic grammar, nouns can be classified from the perspective of definiteness into two main categories:

● Indefinite nouns (النكرة)
● Definite nouns (المعرفة)

Indefinite Nouns

Indefinite nouns are words that do not point to a specific thing. They refer to something general or unspecified.

For example: بيتٌ (a house), سيارةٌ (a car), رجلٌ (a man).

The fundamental principle regarding nouns is that they generally end with a tanwīn (nunation)¹ unless there is a reason to remove it. This tanwīn is what makes a noun indefinite.

I recently came across a message in a homeschooling group on Facebook that raised a very important concern—one that many parents sincerely think about:

Benefits of Starting Your Child on Qur’an Memorization at a Young Age

The Qur’an is the uncreated Word of Allāh, which He revealed to mankind as a source of guidance and light.

Allah has promised to preserve this Book, as He says:

﴿إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ﴾ [الحجر: ٩]

“Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will surely preserve it.”

Part of this preservation is that the Qur’an is memorized by people in every generation.

From the mercy of Allāh is that He has made the Qur’an easy to memorize and understand, as He says:

﴿وَلَقَدۡ یَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ﴾ [القمر: ١٧]

“And We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance, so is there anyone who will remember?”

Because of this, it is well known in the biographies of many scholars that they memorized the Qur’ān before reaching maturity.

One of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child is to facilitate the memorization and understanding of the Qur’an.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

خيركم من تعلم القرآن وعلمه

“The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”

Below are some of the benefits in making your child memorize the Qur’an

Benefits of Qur’an Memorization for Children:

1. Your child becomes among those whom Allah uses to preserve His Book.

2. It instills in the child a strong love for Islam.

3. It nurtures a love for goodness and a dislike for evil deeds.

4. Memorizing and understanding the Qur’an is a gateway to Islamic knowledge and scholarship.

5. The child develops a strong connection with the words of Allah from an early age.

6. The Qur’ān will intercede for your child on the Day of Judgment.

7. Your child learns to honor and respect you, as taught in the Qur’an.

8. It brings parents peace of mind, knowing their child is guided and protected from harmful influences.

9. Your child is more likely to care for you in your old age as taught by the Qur’ān

10. Your child will pray for you after your death, which is among the greatest ongoing benefits.

Starting your child on the journey of Qur’an memorization at a young age is not just an educational decision, it is an investment in their faith, character, future and hereafter.

It shapes their identity, strengthens their relationship with Allāh, and benefits both the child and the parents in this life and the Hereafter.

There is no greater gift than raising a child who is connected to the Qur’ān, reciting it, living by it, and carrying it forward for generations to come.
