With the development of preventive measures in many countries worldwide, there has been a drop in the rates of serious crimes. This achievement, however, has not led to stable sense of security among the public, as more and more individuals feel less secure than at any time in history. Among many reasons behind this trend, the primary ones are media influence and an increase in minor crimes. These issues can be addressed by the government through specific actions.
The way by which news is reported in the media is one of the major reasons why people feel insecure despite the decline in major crime cases. Nowadays, it is not uncommon to encounter news outlets covering “bad news” more prominently than positive stories. Although many countries have managed to reduce the number of felonies such as murder, rape, or terrorism, the media often broadcasts even less severe crimes in a sensational way to grab people’s attention. In some cases, news coverage on TV or social media is exaggerated to such an extent that many people fall victim to this misinformation, leading to widespread fear among the public. Additionally, more often than not, even rare cases of crime circulate widely in the media, making people believe that their security is at risk. For instance, an extremely rare case of child kidnapping or a single act of terrorism may receive massive coverage, causing anxiety and worry not only among the residents of the place where the crime occurred, but also among people all around the world.
Another reason is that while major crimes have declined, an opposite trend has been observed in cases of lesser crimes. In spite of all the technological innovations and crime-preventive measures, the number of minor crimes such as theft, burglary, pick-pocketing, and online fraud has soared worldwide. This undoubtedly contributes to increased anxiety among people, as they worry about the safety of their belongings, property, and private information.
As for the solutions, a number of measures can be proposed. Firstly, sensationalism in the media should be eliminated. The government should regulate the media by introducing strict rules against misinformation and fear-based headlines. If a serious crime occurs, the media should avoid exaggeration for popularity and instead provide accurate reporting. Furthermore, the government should provide transparent and accessible crime statistics to reassure the public and prevent unnecessary fear.
Another measure is to reduce the rate of minor crimes. By installing surveillance cameras and increasing the number of police officers on patrol in communities, these crimes can be minimized. These two measures can act as deterrents, discouraging potential offenders from breaking the law, thereby reducing crime and increasing public safety.
In conclusion, the main reasons why people feel less safe are media pressure and the prevalence of petty crimes. The government can address this issue by regulating the media and implementing measures to reduce such crimes.
