🎤 “Name your 4 favourite films”

Several months ago I finally came back to my long-abandoned cinephile era. Once a week I go to the cinema alone and watch films in the original.

I got tired of consuming content fast, just for the sake of it, without even thinking (and forgetting everything right after). Going to movies alone helps me stay focused, fully immerse myself and actually experience the film.

➡️ I started taking notes on what I watch and that’s when I discovered https://letterboxd.com/ It was kinda a buzzword all over socials and I decided to give it a try. Best decision ever.

It’s a social network for film lovers where you can keep track of what you watch, rate it, write reviews, build lists and follow people.

And unexpectedly…yet another not-so-obvious way to practice English!

I mean, you’re basically training 2 skills at once:

1️⃣ understanding lively written English

You see how people describe genres, scenes, emotions, character arcs. Sometimes it’s edgy one-liners, sometimes real masterpiece analysis in action. You start to pick up phrases, borrow structures, tone.

2️⃣ expressing your own thoughts & mastering writing

You learn to distill what you’ve just watched into a few lines, to find the essence and your own voice in a written form.

With Letterboxd, watching films becomes more intentional. You know you’ll log it later, and that changes how you watch from the start: you notice more, get curious and it stays with you.

At the same time, it still feels like a game:

You watch → you process → you log it → you write → you get likes → you discover new films.

⭐️ My Letterboxd phase happened right before the Oscars which made it really easy to get into. But there’s always something on for people who love movies! We have Cannes ahead, a hot summer season and then autumn festivals with the most anticipated auteur movies by Spielberg, Nolan, Villeneuve and more.

So go create an account in English, build your 4 favourites. Stay ready. You never know when someone with a tricolour mic gonna ask you this question 🎤😅

🥳 В мае будет три года, как я занимаюсь английским с http://tg.me/myjuliatara по три раза в неделю, и несмотря на то, что мой уровень позволяет мне работать на рынках Европы и США, читать книжки и исследования в оригинале и не чувствовать никаких барьеров, живя в Европе, я все равно продолжаю заниматься. Почему?

Потому что мне очень интересно

Занятия с Юлей стали тем местом, где я обсуждаю самые важные для меня темы. Три года назад мы прочесывали вместе все книжки и теории бренд-стратегов, потом переходили на темы авангардного искусства, изучали теории социальной справедливости.
(Кстати, темы типа «повторяем названия всех приборов, которые видим на кухне» тоже были, потому что в какой-то момент я поняла, что могу идеально поговорить про брендинг, но зависнуть на слове КУХОННАЯ ЛОПАТОЧКА)

Язык, впервые за долгие годы разных попыток его плотного изучения превратился в инструмент, благодаря которому я могу изучать не что-то абстрактное, а то, что меня зажигает, то, что хочется обсуждать с другими людьми, то, о чем я на самом деле разговариваю.

В этом Юля поделилась другими любимыми темами, которые она обсуждала со своими студентами. Рада, кстати, что несколько из них пришли по моей рекомендации. Леди, вы супер!!

🥳 А еще я год хожу на (хотя по началу жутко такого боялась, а сейчас меня оттуда не вытащить), темы наших обсуждений очень терапевтичные, мы обсуждали, что такое уязвимость, страх, сожаление, забота о себе, надежда и так далее.

🎀 Хочу сделать отдельный пост про то, с какими целями я приходила изначально и как я их достигла (типа работать с англоязычными командами, читать исследования в оригинале, заводить глубокую дружбу с иностранцами).

Let’s talk about regret

This month our Kinda Speaking Club is exploring one big question – What is Regret?

We've already had the first meeting where we tried to understand the concept itself and distinguish it from guilt, shame or a simple mistake. We also discussed why people experience regret and whether we regret things we did or things we didn't do. We moved into a vulnerable mode and shared our personal experiences.

As you can see on our Miro board, most associations with regret are quite painful. But during the discussion we made a small shift and started to view regret as just a normal experience, a lesson we can take and a signal of what really matters to us. And that was my initial goal for this topic. Not to turn it into tragedy but to keep it closer to hope (again!)

An interview with a guy who has been studying regret for many years + a case study. This one actually helped resolve a personal doubt for one of the participants!

The talk suggests that most regrets fall into 4 categories:

• foundation regrets
• boldness regrets
• moral regrets
• connection regrets

And together they reveal something important – what we truly value in life.

A short video about how the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard thought about regret.

Marry, and you will regret it.
Don’t marry, you will regret it too.

Sounds ironic, but the point is quite deep. Regret may simply be part of the human condition.

🔥 THEORIES OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

The most fascinating topic I’ve explored so far! We started with John Rawls and Veil of Ignorance and soon began questioning whether fairness can ever truly be neutral. From debates about the very Russian version of libertarianism to Critical Race Theory and Capability approach, the lessons gradually turned into a shared intellectual discovery.

The biggest highlight of this lesson set was the shift of an abstract branding framework into sth deeply personal.
We looked at brand positioning and the way companies define their “what”, “how” and “why” – the Golden Circle. Then applying the same logic to ourselves, we crafted a personal mission statement based on core values and life roles. So powerful.

💅 FABRICS & MATERIALS

Finally, a topic from the world of fashion! We discussed fibres and fabric construction, looking at how functional properties shape their use in fashion manufacturing.
From there we moved to innovative and eco-materials within the circular economy, turning industry terminology into stronger professional vocabulary and materials into strategy.

Mind-blowing! After taking a DNA test, Ekaterina began decoding the results with Gemini AI and wanted to discuss it all in English. That led us to questions about how genetics may influence personality traits, and how motivation, habits and neuroplasticity shape our behaviour over time. All of it building the language for deeper self-awareness.

Paris Fashion Week is coming to an end, but people still seem to be talking about Jonathan Anderson’s FW2026 women’s collection for Dior. I know, right? I’m mesmerised by it too, honestly.

Somehow this man led me to a real treasure trove. I was looking up one particular item from the film where Anderson also worked as costume designer (Challengers, 2024) and stumbled upon BAMF Style — a website entirely dedicated to men’s fashion in cinema.

➡️ It’s run by writer Nick Guzan, who launched the blog back in 2013 simply out of love for movies and movie costumes. The name itself comes from the famous wallet in Pulp Fiction (or can de adressed as Badass Men's Fashion). Over the years it has grown into a huge carefully curated archive of outfit breakdowns from Hollywood classics to contemporary releases.

➡️ Each post begins with some basic film info and background on the character. Then Guzan examines the wardrobe piece by piece: suits, shirts, accessories, and even cars. He also explains how the clothes shape the character and the story itself.

Some posts focus on a single iconic item, others analyse several outfits across the film. If the pieces are modern enough, Guzan even links to items you can actually buy. At the end you can find a classic “How to Get the Look” wrap-up.

🔵 The greatest part is vocabulary!!!
The articles are packed with proper fashion terminology, like notch lapels, jetted pockets, raglan sleeves, semi-spread collars, rust windowpane checks, etc. The sort of language you rarely see outside professional fashion writing.

The detective’s style feels more refined than in the previous Knives Out films, inspired by 1970s tailoring and Yves Saint Laurent. These light luxirous looks create a striking contrast with the darker, simpler wardrobe of the priest, adding another layer to the story.

You know this fact but...

While watching another Australian series in my research of the Australian accent, there was a scene where people were learning CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation – the life-saving chest compression procedure) using Stayin’ Alive by BeeGees as a rhythm guide.

I mean, everyone has kinda heard about it. But I was curious to find sth more.

Besides, I have so many other funny associations with the song, like the rooftop scene with Andrew Scott as Moriarty in Sherlock, or a hilarious episode with a CPR technique performed by Michael Scott in The Office.

➡️ Why BeeGees?

Current CPR guidelines recommend 100–120 compressions per minute.
Stayin’ Alive sits at 103 BPM, which means it has a perfect steady beat. It acts as a mnemonic device, sth your body can hold on to when your brain freezes. And yes, the irony of the title definitely helps.

It all started in the 2000s, when the American Heart Association began actively promoting Hands-Only CPR (to make emergency response easier for non-professionals), instructors started using the song as a tempo guide. It simply matched the recommended rhythm almost perfectly.

Some studies showed that medical trainees kept better tempo when they mentally played the song.

⭐️But it’s not the only option!

Other tracks in the same BPM range:

• Another One Bites the Dust by Queen (110 BPM)
Slightly darker choice, tho

• Hips Don't Lie by Shakira (100 BPM)
Unexpectedly practical and fancy 💅

• Crazy in Love by Beyoncé (99 BPM)

New month at our Kinda Speaking Club

What is Hope for you personally?

That’s what we tried to find out at our 1st session of Kinda Speaking Club this month.

⭐️This session was mostly focused on attempting to define this term, distinguish it from other similar concepts, like a feeling, a decision, faith, belief, and to understand its connection to the future and uncertainty.

⭐️We started with a group brainstorming activity: everyone shared their associations with hope. We've got plenty on our board! A few participant reflections are also included in slides ➡️

Some insights after the discussion

1. Hope vs Optimism

We noticed that optimism often sounds like “things will be fine”, while hope feels more like “even if things are not fine, I will find a way to move through it.”
Optimism is about expecting a good outcome, whereas hope can exist even without a clear expectation.

2. Hope in Religion

In Christianity, hope is often understood as waiting for God to act, trusting that salvation comes from Him rather than from your own control over the outcome.
It is less about expecting improvement and more about patiently relying on something beyond yourself.

❤️‍🔥Hot movie night rec and an accent challenge for you!

There’s a pretty common belief that British accents are harder to understand, while American English is more low-key and learner-friendly. I’ve been thinking a lot about where this bias actually comes from (turned out I used to be biased myself).

While watching Challengers, directed by Luca Guadagnino, I caught myself doing sth I really hate at an advanced level.
Pause, rewind, replay, rewind again.
Sometimes I genuinely struggled to understand what Zendaya and Josh O'Connor were saying, not because of the vocab, but because of how the speech itself was delivered.

🚩The case with Josh is even more impressive here because he’s originally British, yet mastered a very convincing contemporary American accent. Which just means he actually did his job extremely well.

I watched tons of his interviews to get this striking difference in his “royal” British accent which is close to modern RP / Southern British. It sounds so controlled and clear with clean vowels, neat consonants and zero chaos (ok, there’s only the laughing chaos of his playful personality😅).

🚩In Challengers, however, the characters speak modern, urban, emotionally loaded American English, which comes with a completely different sound picture, like

• heavy vowel reduction
• blurred word boundaries & mumbling
• fast tempo + interruptions
• lots of half-swallowed consonants
• speech driven by emotion, not clarity

👁 So why do people often say British accents are “harder”?

1. Sheer variety

The UK is packed with wildly different accents (London, Brummie, Scottish, Welsh, etc.), some of them are challenging even for native speakers from other regions. Classic RP is a different story, its controlled rhythm and articulation make it easier to follow.

2. Exposure bias

American accents feel familiar and easier because we hear them all the time, in Hollywood movies, Netflix shows, YouTube. British accents often feel just unexpected.

♥️So what’s the advice?

1. Same as always! Just train your ear

Don’t be afraid of the original.
Pause, rewind, listen closely, that’s part of the process. Expose yourself to different accents, registers, and speech styles.

2. And yes. Watch Challengers

Sharp visual language by Luca, costumes by Jonathan Anderson in his Loewe era, intense threesome drama and cooked soundtrack.
