🔍 MARKET DUMP EXPLAINED

The crypto total market cap lost nearly $200B in the past 12 hours.

Here’s why:

> Primary triggers include correlation spillover from traditional Asian markets, overleveraged long positions unwinding, and a spike in FUD within the industry.

> Notably, Japanese bond yields spiked on rate hike expectations – Japan’s two-year government bond yield rose to 1%, the five-year rose to 1.38% and the ten-year bond yield rose to 1.87%. These are the highest levels since 2008. This led to a Nikkei decline, with spillover effects into Asian crypto trading. The expected BoJ rate hikes also have an effect on the yen carry trade as it becomes more expensive to borrow money. This results in a sell off for risk assets like crypto.

> It is also possible that this risk off selling may have been accelerated by a sudden wave in selling pressure coming from a large number of algorithmic trading bots (day, week, and month bots) rebalancing their portfolios at the same time (midnight UTC). Combine this with thin weekend liquidity, large drawdowns in short time frames make more sense.

> This sudden surge in selling pressure also resulted in a liquidation cascade that saw $543M in long liquidations over the past 12 hours.

> While macro factors triggered today’s selloff, crypto-native FUD also contributed towards the broader market uncertainty and lack of liquidity. Notably, in the past few days, we experienced two major security incidents with Upbit losing $38.6M and Yearn finance losing $9M. We’ve also seen concerns around the stability of Tether rise to the surface.

🔍 ONCHAIN INSIGHTS: MONAD ($MON)

It’s been five days since mainnet launch.

Here’s what the onchain data says about the current state of Monad:

> Most airdrop receivers have sold their allocations. Data from Dune shows that 60% of all airdropped wallets have sold their allocations completely. Of the remaining 40%, 10% have booked partial profits while 30% have yet to sell a single token from their airdrop allocation.

> A closer look at the data reveals that most of the top wallets by airdrop value have sold at least part of their allocations. Only 53 of the top 1000 wallets (5.3%) have diamond handed their allocations. While intense selling from top wallets isn’t a great sign of long-term confidence, a good chunk of sell pressure from airdrop wallets is now out of the way.

> Defillama shows that TVL has been steadily climbing on the chain, rising from $73M on day 1 to roughly $163M at the time of writing. Most of this TVL growth appears to come from DeFi yield being farmed on Uniswap, Curve, Morpho, and Upshift.

> Data on Nansen also shows that activity on the network remains steady. Daily active addresses stand at ~120,000 and average daily transactions stand at 3M. Ecosystem dashboards Monadvision and Nadradar show that much of the activity on the network comes from memecoin trading. Specifically, http://Nad.fun/ takes the crown as the main token launchpad on Monad with nearly 483K transactions coming from the protocol since mainnet launch.

> This intense activity has been reflected in the parabolic run seen by Monad memecoins immediately after launch. However, much of this speculative activity is now muted, with most of these memecoins seeing significant dumps shortly after day 3 of mainnet. In fact, they seem to be struggling to regain the price momentum they initially experienced, with just a single Monad memecoin currently over $1M in marketcap.

> In other words, most of this speculative activity likely came from mercenary traders looking to capitalise on the post-launch hype. As of now, memecoin trading on Monad seems to have officially peaked in terms of trading volume. Data from Wormholescan confirms this - nearly 85% of the funds bridged (volume) to Monad post launch have gone back to other chains.

> Besides memecoins and DeFi, Monad also features consumer and gaming apps like http://Bro.fun/, lootGO and Lumiterra. However, activity within this segment is still relatively small.

> The NFTs ecosystem on Monad is also in its early stages. Magic Eden appears to offer the most support for Monad collections, featuring more verified collections than rival platform OpenSea. Between the two platforms, the top three NFT collections on Monad (by floor price and trading activity) are skrumpeys, Molandaks and Monadverse.

> The total value of stolen assets is now estimated to be 44.5 billion KRW ($30 million). This includes 5.9 billion KRW ($4 million) of Upbit’s corporate funds and 38.6 billion KRW ($26 million) in user assets.

🚨 UPBIT PROVIDES REVISED LOSS ESTIMATE
