Elements of an Italian Light-Cavalry Armor alla Tedesca (in the German Fashion) ca. 1510, Italian, Milan, The MET

This is a rare example of Italian armor decorated with fluted surfaces in the German fashion. Its etched and richly gilt decoration is derived from Christian symbolism and the Bible. The band across the top of the breastplate depicts the Virgin and Child in the center, Saint Paul on the right, and Saint George on the left. A Latin inscription below reads, CRISTVS RES VENIT IN PACE ET DEVS HOMO FACTVS ES (Christ the King came in peace and God was made man). Another inscription, across the top of the backplate, reads, IESVS AVTEM TRANSIENS PERMEDIVM ILORVM IBAT. (But Jesus passing through their midst went his way [Luke 4:30]). The Trinity––Father, Son, and Holy Spirit––is depicted on the front of the gorget (collar).

St. Jerome in the Wilderness is a double-sided oil on panel painting by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, executed around 1496, now in the National Gallery in London, where both sides are displayed.

Jerome is portrayed during his hermitage, surrounded by all the symbols traditionally attributed to him: the tamed lion, the hat and the cardinal garments on the ground (a symbol of rejection of earthly honors), the book (Jerome was a translator of the Vulgate), the stone he used to hit himself, and the crucifix for the prayers.

The depiction of nature is typical of Northern European art, with numerous details such as the small birds, the white butterfly in the lower part, as well as the fine rendering of the trunk's bark or the depiction of grass spear by spear.

Dürer’s version of the desert – or wilderness – in which the saint lived for years is particularly northern European. The grasses and flowers around his knees, for example, are closely observed and include a number of different varieties. Two little goldfinches perch by the edge of a stream, one drinking from it (the bird was traditionally a symbol of Christ’s Passion).

The reverse depicts a dark sky and what might be planets, a comet or meteorite or an eclipse, possibly a reference to Saint John the Evangelist’s descriptions of the end of the world as recorded in the Book of Revelation.

Dürer's inspiration may have been the depictions of comets in the Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493. However, those woodcuts are highly stylized, and are not intended to show historical comets, whereas Dürer's image has the feel of an actual observation, as does the blazing star in Dürer's enigmatic engraving Melencolia I, published in 1514.

The Portrait of Bindo Altoviti, c.1515, by Raphael

Bindo Altoviti was a rich investor conceived in Rome in 1491 of the Florentine cause. The simple, relatively feminine position of the subject alongside the overwhelming difference among light and shadow are atypical of Raphael's work, especially of his representations of men, showing the craftsman's experimentation with various styles and structures in his later Roman time. The impact of Leonardo, which Raphael considered cleverly amid this time of his profession, is strikingly apparent in this specific piece.

He rotates in an emotional, relatively dramatic, approach to settling the eye of the watcher. Maybe one watcher specifically was intended to get his enthralling look: Bindo's better half Fiammetta Soderini. Renaissance writers and subjects were consistent in trusting that a man initially became hopelessly enamoured through the eyes.

They were known as the "aides of affection," which could "uncover the energy inside more viable than the tongue itself, or letter, or ambassadors." Bindo's flushed cheeks add to the impression of enthusiasm, and a ring is noticeable on the hand he holds over his heart. The robe stretching from his shoulder uncovers an exposed scruff stroked by delicate twists. Their brilliant shading would have underscored the honorability and immaculateness of his affection.

Bindo and Fiammetta, a girl of a famous Florentine family, were hitched in 1511 when Bindo would have been around twenty. They went on to have six children. However, Fiammetta kept on living in Florence while Bindo's business with the ecclesiastical court required his quality in Rome. This picture, which hung in the couple's residence in Florence, would have furnished Fiammetta with a distinctive notice of her missing spouse. It stayed in the Altoviti family for about three hundred years.

In this scene, taken from the German novel Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué (1777-1843), the young knight Huldbrand escorts his bride, Undine, through an enchanted forest full of writhing elves and goblins. By her marriage to a human the water spirit Undine gained a mortal soul but lost the prospect of eternal life. Father Heilmann, having just performed the ceremony, emerges from beneath a canopy of trees, while the evil and sinister Kühleborn, spirit of the waters and Undine's uncle, rises up ahead of them in an attempt to return Undine to her family.

In this painting a young Christian woman is being forced by Roman soldiers to give up Christianity for paganism. In a jam packed stadium, the crowds are keenly waiting for her decision.

The painting is set in the Roman city of Ephesus, on the coast of modern day Turkey. All eyes are on the central character, a young Christian woman whose expression is heavy with the burden of making a life or death decision. Will she give up Christianity by offering incense to the statue of Diana, the goddess of hunting or will she refuse and be dragged away by the soldiers to be killed? Behind her, a Roman official holds up the certificate which guarantees her freedom as it records she has given up Christianity for paganism. Although her eyes are looking up towards Heaven, her body is leaning towards the altar of Diana.

So popular was the painting, that the artist painted two.
The painting was originally shown at the opening of Blackburn Museum’s New Art Gallery (now Victorian Gallery) in 1894. Alongside the catalogue entry for the painting at the opening exhibition for the New Art Gallery in 1894 was this poem written by J B Greenwood inspired by the scene depicted by Edwin Long RA in Diana or Christ? This excerpt taken from the end of the poem describes the moment that the young lady makes her difficult choice –

“Tempt me no more; not one grain will I cast,
Denying Him who gave His life for mine;
Into his hands my spirit I resign,
Lead on; the bitterness of death is past!”

Daniel Maclise: The Wrestling Scene in 'As You Like It', 1855

The subject is taken from As You Like It, Act I, Scene 2. Rosalind and her friend Celia, daughters respectively of the banished Duke and his brother, the usurper Frederick, watch a wrestling match between an unknown youth, Orlando, and Charles, a professional wrestler of formidable reputation. Naturally they want Orlando to win, as indeed he does.

Rosalind: O excellent young man!
Celia: If I had a thunderbolt in mine eye, I can tell who
should down.

The Wrestling Scene in 'As You Like It' is a magnificent example of Maclise's later style, but had a mixed reception when it was exhibited. The Athenaeum found it 'dramatic, picturesque, imaginative, and full of detail; yet with no very great sentiment, and too masculine and sinewy to possess much subtlety of poetic feeling'. 'Never was (Maclise's) imagination more actively at work', wrote Tom Taylor in the Times.

'Determined to make his numerous personages expressive, he has gone into the very depths of their character to seek for influences, and has branded his discoveries on their faces.' After giving examples, he continued: 'All this shows marvellous invention and discrimination of character, but the artist makes us wish that he had sometimes reined in his power, and dared now and then to be insignificant. So much obvious meaning is there in every corner of the work that we long for a point of repose.'

John Ruskin, not surprisingly, was the sternest critic. 'This work,' he wrote in Academy Notes, 'has every fault usually attributed to the Pre-Raphaelites, without one of their excellences. The details are all so sharp and hard that the patterns on the dresses force the eye away from the faces, and the leaves on the boughs call to us to count them. But not only are they all drawn distinctly, they are all drawn wrong' - a point which he proceeded to demonstrate as only Ruskin could.
