The painting portrays Elizaveta Mikhailovna Martynova (1868–1905) — an artist and close friend of Somov. She entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1890, at a time when women were just beginning to be admitted to formal training.

Martynova’s figure is positioned close to the foreground, yet her distant gaze—passing straight through the viewer—her pale complexion, and the cool blue of her dress, which visually recedes, lend her an aloof and untouchable presence. Her hand, pressed to her chest (and serving as the compositional focal point), creates a subtle barrier between herself and the observer. Her low-cut dress, made of lace-trimmed blue muslin, evokes an earlier era when corseted waists and full crinolines emphasized the delicate, fragile silhouette of a woman. In contrast, her hairstyle is strikingly simple.

A funerary monument dedicated to Cecilia Gaetani dell’Acquilla d’Aragona (1690–1710), mother of Prince Raimondo, who died shortly after childbirth. Corradini, known for repeatedly depicting figures draped in veils or cloth, reached the peak of his artistry here.

The fabric, seemingly damp, drapes gracefully and naturally over the female form.

Her gaze turned aside, the delicate lightness of her posture, a withered tree at her feet, a shattered marble slab bearing an epitaph—each detail, along with the flowing cloth, underscores how prematurely this woman’s life was cut short.
