AI and the dulling of the intellect

As AI becomes more and more embedded in everything we use, it is important that one be very conscious of what they use AI for and what they decide is not worth risking becoming dull in. Take the example of spell check, as it became more widely used such that it is now expected one uses it before submitting a document or writing an email; the overall ability of people to spell words correctly dulled.

Now, AI checks are embedded in Word and email, which encourages people to sloppily write the overall idea they want to convey and then click the "polish" button so that they do not have to spend time thinking of how best to word something. The danger of this is that just as spell check dulls the ability of one to spell, this feature most likely will dull people's ability to articulate themselves.

Without the ability to articulate oneself well, it is very difficult for a person to formulate an argument, persuade, explain oneself, or engage in meaningful dialogue. More important than these things, articulation is the act of thinking itself. The ability to think is fundamental to being human; without it, one becomes more animal-like.

While AI has some amazing applications, one has to be more diligent than ever over the effects any specific usage will have on oneself and evaluate if the trade-off is worth it.

علوم #المذهب_المالكي على التفصيل أربعة عشر علما (ويمكن أن يدخل بعضها في بعض فالمسألة تقريبية فقط):

1-علم #الفروع_الفقهية: و قد حوتها المتون كالمختصر و الرسالة و شروحاتها و حواشيها

2-علم #أصول_الفقه: في المتون و الكتب المختصرة و المطولة التي تناولت أصول فقه مذهب الإمام مالك رضي الله عنه منها: نظم ابن أبي كف وشروحه و الجواهر الثمينة للمشاط و مختصر ابن الحاجب و شروحاته المالكية و مراقي السعود و شروحاته و شروحات المالكية على جمع الجوامع ...

3-علم #تخريج_الفروع_على_الأصول : التي اهتمت ببناء الفروع الفقهية على القواعد الأصولية و فيه عند السادة المالكية ألف العلامة التلمساني كتابه :مفتاح الوصول إلى بناء الفروع على الأصول و عليه شرح لطيف للشيخ مولود السريري ، وشرح الشيخ ابراهيم آب الشنقيطي المسمى لقاح العقول

4-علم #القواعد_الفقهية : و هو الذي يعتني بالقواعد و الضوابط الكلية للفقه و فيه مؤلفات كثيرة: منها نظم المنهج المنتخب للزقاق و شرحه للمنجور و تكملته لميارة و شرحها

5-علم #الفروق_والأشباه_والنظائر : و هو من العلوم الدقيقة التي تجمع الفروع الفقهية التي قد تتشابه في صورتها و لكن تختلف لأحكامها لعلل توجب ذلك الاختلاف : و أجل ما كتب فيه عند المالكية كتاب الفروق للعلامة القرافي و شرحه لابن الشاط ..
و نظم نظائر الرسالة لابن غازي و شرحها للحطاب

6-علم #أحكام_القضاء : و ما يتعلق به من آداب و خطط و عقود و وثائق .. و فيه نظم العاصمية "تحفة الحكام" و شروحاتها و تبصرة ابن فرحون

7 -علم #السياسة_الشرعية_و_الحسبة : و هي مبثوثة في كتب القضاء و توسع في ذلك ابن فرحون في أواخر تبصرته ، و من كتب الحسبة "آداب الحسبة و المحتسب لابن عبد الرؤوف المالكي.

8-علم #الفتوى_والنوازل : و فيه الكتب التي جمعت الفتاوى خاصة مسائل النوازل و هي كثيرة عند المالكية أهمما : "المعيار المعرب" للونشريسي و هو أوسعها و فتح العلي المالك لعليش و نوازل الهلالي و أجوبة ابن عظوم .

9-علم #الفرائض : و ما يتعلق بها من مناسخات و حساب و مما كتب السادة المالكية في هذا العلم الجليل الدرة البيضاء للعلامة الأخضري و شروحها و الرسموكية و شروحها ، وحاشية ابن الخياط على شرح فرائض المختصر للخرشي .

10-علم #مقاصد_الشريعة : و هو علم تميز فيه السادة المالكية و قد ضمنه العلامة الشاطبي في موافقاته ، و الشيخ الطاهر بن عاشور في مقاصد الشريعة.
11-علم #التراجم_و_الطبقات: و فيه الكتب التي اعتنت بتراجم علماء المالكية عبر العصور كترتيب المدارك للقاضي عياض و الديباج المذهب لابن فرحون و تكميلاته و شجرة النور الزكية لابن مخلوف.

12-علم #اصطلاح_المذهب : الذي يهتم بنشأة المذهب و أهم مصطلحات المالكية و كتبهم المعتمدة و فيه نظم البوطليحية للنابغة الغلاوي .و من الكتب المعاصرة "اصطلاح المذهب " لمحمد إبراهيم علي .

13- علم #الفقه_المقارن: أي مقارنة أقوال المذهب ببقية المذاهب و اجل ما كُتب فيه كتاب الإشراف على مسائل الخلاف للقاضي عبد الوهاب وبداية المجتهد لابن رشد الخفيد
14-علم #الجدل_و_الحجاج_الفقهي : و
هو يختلف عن الفقه المقارن بالرد على المخالف و إيراد الحجج و الدفاع عن المذهب و مما كتب فيه : الرد على الإمام الشافعي لابن اللباد و المنهاج في ترتيب الحجاج لأبي الوليد الباجي ....

فكان لا يسمى الرجل أنه من فقهاء المالكية إلا إذا أتقن هذا كله واختلط بلحمه وشحمه وعظمه!

The carryover of Islamic Studies into professional work

I recently made a recommendation to a client to save on taxes, which was questioned by the client's financial advisor. The objection by the financial advisor was based on a misunderstanding of what a word meant in the IRS guidances and publications. Specifically, using the linguistic definition of the word "covered" while not considering the legal meaning of it as defined by the IRS for that particular context.

Those who study mutun know the importance of defining terms and determining whether the usage of a particular word is linguistic or technical and, if it is technical, then in which discipline? Is it the technical definition as used in fiqh, usul, hadith, or another field of study? Mixing up any of these can result in major misunderstandings in one's explanation of a text.

That is exactly what happened, and the research confirmed it.

As someone who has to constantly work with reading and interpreting the law to assist clients, I have found that developing this skill allows me to see things that some people miss. This plays into an important point, and that is that the Islamic disciplines, especially Usul al Fiqh, prepare one for things that are more general than religious discussions. Usul al Fiqh because it deals with various fundamental questions on the meaning and usage of language, which is so central to our daily lives.

We are increasingly seeing more general Muslims doing serious studying of the Islamic sciences, and as this happens, it is important that we search for the threads that connect these sciences to wider areas of study. This is something that I believe creates an interesting catalyst for dawah that a pamphlet never could.
