EUR/GBP Attempts to Bounce – Action Forex

The pound holds on to its latest gains in the wake of hawkish BoE comments. A sharp drop below 0.8810 has invalidated the previous bounce, putting the bulls on the defensive. The daily support of 0.8770 coincides with the base of the breakout rally at the end of January, making it the bulls’ last stronghold. A bearish breakout could pave the way for a reversal below 0.8730. The RSI’s oversold condition attracted some bids and 0.8830 is the first hurdle. 0.8890 is the obstacle to clear before a recovery could materialise.

USD/JPY Test Support – Action Forex

The Japanese yen inched lower as January’s inflation missed expectations. On the daily chart, a bullish MA cross and a close above this year’s high of 134.40 indicate that sentiment could be turning around in the medium-term. Zooming in, the pair may continue to enjoy the bullish ride as long as traders buy pullbacks. 133.90 is a fresh support and 133.00 near the 20-day SMA would be the bulls’ second line of defence. A close above 135.30 would resume the rally with the former support of 136.00 as a potential target.

Japanese Inflation Keeps Rising – Action Forex

Today, we get the final Q4 GDP data from Germany but otherwise it should be a quiet day in Europe.

During US hours it gets a bit busier as the January data on personal spending and new home sales is released.

In the central bank calendar, we have ECB’s Nagel and a flurry of Fed speakers on the wires.

SPX 500 Seeks Support – Action Forex

The S&P 500 struggles as investors temper their Fed pivot hope amid solid economic data. A break below the previous swing low of 4050 has forced leveraged buyers to exit, turning it into a resistance. Even the psychological level of 4000 has failed to contain the sell-off, which suggests a strong bearish pressure in the short-term. USD/JPY Regains Strength, US GDP Expands 2.7%

Key Highlights

- USD/JPY climbed higher above the 132.50 resistance zone.
- A connecting bullish trend line is forming with support near 134.50 on the 4-hours chart.
- EUR/USD slowly moved below the 1.0620 support zone.

GBPJPY Wave Analysis – Action Forex

- GBPJPY reversed from key resistance level 163.00
- Likely to fall to support level 160.50

GBPJPY currency pair recently reversed down from the key resistance level 163.00 (former monthly low from November) coinciding with the upper daily Bollinger Band and the 50% Fibonacci correction of the downward impulse from November.

The downward reversal from the resistance level 163.00 stopped the previous impulse waves (iii) and 3, which belong to wave 3 from the start of January.

Given the overbought reading on the daily Stochastic, GBPJPY can be expected to fall further toward the next support level 160.50 (low of the previous minor wave (iv)).

We Have Lifted Both RBA Cash Rate Forecast and FOMC Forecast

We have lifted our forecast terminal RBA cash rate from 3.85% to 4.1%.

We have also lifted our forecast for the federal funds rate with a peak in June of 5.25–5.5%, from 4.75–5% in March.

Since October we have consistently held the view that the cash rate would peak in May at 3.85%.

We still see the date of the peak as May 2023 but now see that peak as slightly higher.

The previous view envisaged a 25 basis point hike in March followed by a pause in April with the final hike of 25 basis points in May.

Cliff Notes: Mixed Signals to Keep Central Banks on Tightening Path

Key insights from the week that was.

Critical data for Australia’s economy was mixed this week; elsewhere, the mindset of policy makers dominated the headlines.

The minutes of the RBA’s February meeting provided more colour around the Board’s decidedly more hawkish view. Most notably, the option of keeping rates ‘on hold’ was not considered in February having previously been an option in December. Further, debate between a 25bp and 50bp rate hike highlighted questions over the necessary scale of tightening to come and some lingering uncertainty around the timing of inflation’s peak “only [to] be confirmed in a few months’ time”.
