UPSC Interview Preparation ā Different Verticals to Operate On
by Dheeraj Panchal, UPSC CSE 2024
Self-Understanding Vertical:
This is the foundation of your interview preparation. You must know yourself better than anyone else. Be ready to answer who you are, why you want to join the civil services, and what motivates you. Reflect deeply on your likes, dislikes, values, and influences. The hobbies section should not be treated lightly ā know the technical, historical, and current aspects of your interests. Similarly, identify your key achievements and what you learned from them. Your answers should reveal self-awareness, maturity, and clarity of purpose.
Domain Knowledge Vertical:
You are expected to demonstrate a good command over your graduation subject. Revise the fundamentals and be ready for questions linking your discipline with governance and policy. The board often checks how your academic background can contribute to administrative work. Be clear about the relevance of your subject to the UPSC process and to real-life issues.
Current Affairs & General Awareness Vertical:
Stay updated with national and international events, especially those with administrative significance. Economic and political developments, as well as sectoral issues like technology, environment, and geopolitics, are frequently discussed. Be aware of the current debates in your optional subject and know how they connect with policy or governance. Reading newspapers and making short opinion-based notes will help you articulate your views clearly.
Opinion-Based Vertical:
This section tests your ability to think independently and form balanced opinions. Be prepared to discuss controversial issues or sensitive topics in a reasoned and composed manner. You may also face gender-specific questions related to workplace dynamics, policy debates, or postings in remote areas. Always base your answers on constitutional values, empathy, and practicality rather than taking extreme positions.
Behavioral & HR Vertical:
The panel may present you with ethical or situational dilemmas to assess your temperament. Questions often test teamwork, leadership, and conflict management abilities. You must display calmness under stress and logical decision-making. Communicate with clarity and maintain positive body language. Use the STAR method (SituationāTaskāActionāResult) to structure your answers effectively and convey lessons learned from real experiences.
Analytical & Problem-Solving Vertical:
You may be presented with administrative case studies or social problem scenarios. The focus is on your reasoning and ability to arrive at fair, ethical, and practical solutions. Break down issues, identify stakeholders, and justify your decision logically.
Communication & Personality Vertical:
Your confidence, clarity, and composure make a strong impression. Focus on clear articulation, measured tone, and appropriate pauses. Maintain steady eye contact, natural posture, and neat formal attire. Practice speaking aloud to refine your delivery and work on voice modulation to sound calm and assured.
Planning of Mocks:
Plan your mock interviews strategically based on your scheduled UPSC interview date. In the early phase, take three to four mocks to build rhythm and identify weak areas. During the middle phase, take two to three focused mocks for targeted improvement. In the final stretch, take one or two polishing mocks to fine-tune your communication and composure. Mix online and offline mocks for variety, and after each one, review feedback carefully, record your performance, and track progress.
