Some people believe that professional athletes serve as positive role models for young people, while others argue that their behavior both on and off the field has a negative influence.
Discuss both sides and give your opinion.
There is a heated debate over the impact of professional athletes. While some contend that they are inspirational figures for many young fans, others believe that their behavior- whether it be on or off the field- influence them negatively. In my opinion, as with many things, the answer lies somewhere in the middle.
Supporters of the idea that professional athletes serve as role models point to the traits that sports naturally demand- hard work, resilience and the ability to bounce back from failures. These are life lessons, not just game strategies. When young fans witness Cristiano Ronaldo’s quiet commitment despite overwhelming fame or watch Serena Williams return to court after a serious health issue, they see more than athletes- they see persistence, humility and drive. Equally significant is the case that some athletes make meaningful contributions to their communities. A professional football player Sadio Mane exemplifies this. Coming from an underprivileged background, he dedicated a huge part of his earnings to building schools, hospitals as well as some other projects aimed at improving conditions in his village. Having seen such actions, young individuals might draw inspiration and follow suit.
Despite these, not all athletes live up to the pedestal they are placed on. Some are known more for their off-field behavior than their achievements. From doping scandals and match-fixing to aggressive behavior and legal troubles, a number of athletes have found themselves in hot water. When these stories hit the headlines, it sends a confusing message to young fans who idolize them. A pertinent example can be footballers who are repeatedly involved in unsportsmanlike conduct or flaunt wealth in ways that suggest entitlement rather than humility. These behaviors can rub off on their young fans, leading to the normalization of aggression and arrogance. Critics argue that young fans are impressionable and when their idols act out, they are more likely to follow in their footsteps - consciously or not.
While being a source of motivation, we cannot say that sportspeople cannot lead others astray. Like anyone in the public eye, athletes are humans. They make mistakes, fail, learn, grow and sometimes fall short of the standards we project onto them. Considering this, athletes can be a true source of motivation, but this does not mean we blindly idolize them, meaning that parents, teachers, and mentors have a role to play in instilling this idea into young minds. They can teach the difference between admiring and copying their every move. In other words, they can respect their role models’ work ethic without imitating their lifestyle. Also, it is important for children to understand that role models do not have to be flawless. They may fail, but they can teach a powerful lesson; success is not about never failing but how you respond when you do. This along with other qualities like determination, perseverance and hard work are worth emulating.
Having considered both positive and negative effects of professional athletes, I would reiterate that young children should not see them as their superheroes, but as influencers from whom they can learn life lessons and use them in making their way not only in the world of sports but also in other life aspects which inevitably pose difficulties.
