(a) Role of the stomach in digestion (5 marks)

The stomach secretes gastric juice containing hydrochloric acid (HCl), pepsin, and rennin.

HCl provides an acidic medium (pH ~2) suitable for enzyme activity and kills harmful microorganisms.

Pepsin converts proteins into peptides (proteoses and peptones).

Rennin (in infants) coagulates milk protein (caseinogen) into casein for easier digestion.

The stomach muscles churn and mix food with gastric juice to form chyme, which is released slowly into the duodenum through the pyloric sphincter.

(b) Mechanisms that lead to the opening of stomata during the day (15 marks)
