🇯🇵 The Japanese Ministry of Defense has published one of the most detailed documents on military space in recent years, effectively confirming that the country is rapidly transforming space from a supporting structure into a fully-fledged defense element.

By fiscal year 2026, Japan's space operations unit is expected to grow to approximately 880 personnel, up from a small unit of just 20 personnel in 2020.

The primary reason cited for the shift to space is the growth of China's satellite constellation, which has expanded approximately sixfold since 2012 and now numbers over 230 satellites, as well as the development of anti-satellite systems, including laser dazzlers, electronic countermeasures, cyberattacks, and orbital interceptors.

Against this backdrop, Japan is sharply increasing its funding. While approximately $500 million was allocated for space defense in 2022, by 2025, spending has risen to approximately $3.4 billion (!), and in 2026, confirmed contracts alone are estimated at approximately $1 billion.

The primary focus is on space situational awareness systems, including continuous orbital monitoring and protection of its own satellites.

The program also includes tracking radars, laser stations, satellite surveillance systems, and its own network of hypersonic target detection satellites.

The document also explicitly mentions close integration with the United States, as Japan already hosts the U. S. Space Forces Japan command, and the two countries are jointly building an orbital architecture for the early warning of ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

According to the Financial Times, the Chinese leader made this statement during a summit in Beijing last week. This is one of the harshest public assessments of Putin by Xi since the start of the full-scale war.

The destroyers USS Truxtun and USS Mason, supported by Apache helicopters and other aircraft, encountered a series of coordinated threats during the transit. Iran employed small boats, missiles, and drones against them in the barrage. Despite the intensity of the attacks, no American ship was damaged. Military officials stated that defensive measures, bolstered by aerial support, successfully intercepted or neutralized every threat. No launched projectile reached the ships.

The transit occurred after Trump announced that the US would help "escort" vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM stated that two commercial vessels under the American flag had already successfully passed through the strait, and military officials appealed to dozens of other shipowners to "stimulate the movement of ships."

CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated that Iran attacked US military and commercial vessels passing through the strait. In response, the US destroyed six Iranian small boats.

🇸🇪🇺🇦 Sweden has seized a Russian shadow fleet vessel for possible transfer to Ukraine.

The vessel in question is the bulk carrier Caffa, suspected of transporting stolen Ukrainian wheat, which was detained by the Swedish Coast Guard in early March.

The Swedish Prosecution Authority announced today that the ship is now being seized following a request for "mutual legal assistance" from another country, without specifying which one. Stockholm will consider the possibility of transferring the bulk carrier to that state, which is conducting its own investigation.
