🚢🛢🥷 TARGETING THE RUSSIAN "SHADOW FLEET": BELGIUM ALSO TAKES ACTION 🇧🇪⚓

Following the French interception of the sanctioned tanker 'Grinch' a couple of weeks ago, Belgium has now executed its own strike against the Russian Shadow Fleet.

Last night, Belgian Special Forces boarded the sanctioned tanker 'Ethera' in the North Sea. 🚁🌊 This vessel was suspected of operating under a "false flag".

⚠️ Interesting to see is that these actions are apparently based on ​Art. 110 UNCLOS ('False flag'), not the EU Sanctions.

That's probably also the reason why the French authorities released the 'Grinch' after a reportedly 3 million EUR fine was paid. 💸💸💸

⚖️ The Sanctions Paradox: Enforcement vs. Legislation

On the one hand, you see a surge in physical "boots on the deck" enforcement against the "Shadow Fleet." ⚔️

On the other hand, there is a noticeable delay in officializing the 20th Sanctions Package, which remains in legislative limbo. ⏳

🇪🇺📰 THIS SATURDAY, THE EU PUBLISHED ITS 20TH SANCTIONS PACKAGE

🇷🇺🛢 The European Union has finally published its 20th package of sanctions against Russia. The EU keeps targeting the infrastructure that keeps the Russian oil flowing.

Key Highlights of the 20th Package:

🏴‍☠🥷THE SHADOW FLEET :

🚢 43 new vessels added to the blacklist, bringing the total to over 640 tankers.

🛠 Full Maritime Services Ban: EU companies are now prohibited from providing insurance, financing, or technical aid to any vessel carrying Russian crude, effectively ending the old "Price Cap" era.

⛽️🧊 LNG & Icebreakers: Sweeping maintenance bans for LNG tankers to freeze Russia’s future energy projects.

🇬🇪 THE STATUS OF KULEVI PORT (GEORGIA)

There was a lot of tension around the Kulevi Oil Terminal. While it was initially on the "hit list" for facilitating shadow fleet activities, it has been EXCLUDED from the final sanctions list.

Georgia pledged to deny entry to any EU-sanctioned vessels and strictly enforce the price cap for all transit.

💰 FINANCIAL & TRADE PRESSURE

🏦 Banking: 20 more Russian regional banks and several banks in third countries (Central Asia/UAE) are now cut off.

🧑‍💻 Crypto Block: New measures to close the "crypto-loophole" used for sanction circumvention.

🧳 Export Bans: €360M+ in new restrictions on rubber, tractors, and cybersecurity tech.

⚖️ LIST UPDATES

While most big names like Usmanov and Fridman remain sanctioned, 🇷🇺 Maya Bolotova and 🇳🇱 Niels Troost were removed due to "legal weaknesses" in their files to avoid lost court cases.

📉 BOTTOM LINE : The EU is moving toward a total blockade of Russian maritime oil logistics. However, the geopolitical developments in the Middle East 🇮🇷🇮🇱🇺🇸 might put that approach under pressure.

😁 Oh yes, just to be complete, in this same case, in a previous report the auditor also agreed with us that the GAoT should allow on the basis of art. 6(1), the release of funds frozen due to the sanctioning of the NSD.

🗼This will probably become the landmark case. It is one of the first applications that I filed and one of the first that I appealed before the Council of State.

🏃🏻‍♂️ I said it before and I will say it again : it is not a sprint, it is a marathon, but eventually we will cross the finish line. And win. 🥇🎉🍾

⚠️ The 🇪🇺 European Commission has officially put forward the 20th package of sanctions against 🇷🇺 Russia. ⚠️ Key pillars are :

🚢 1. Energy & The Shadow Fleet

Full Maritime Services Ban: A total ban on services for Russian crude oil, coordinated with the G7.

The "Shadow Fleet" Expansion: 43 more vessels added to the blacklist (640 total).

Gas Export Squeeze: Sweeping bans on maintenance and services for LNG tankers and icebreakers.

💰 2. Financial & Crypto Crackdown

Regional Banks: 20 more Russian regional banks are being listed.

Crypto Avenue Closing: New measures targeting cryptocurrencies, trading companies, and platforms to prevent circumvention.

Third-Country Facilitators: Direct targeting of banks in third countries assisting in the trade of sanctioned goods.

⚙️ 3. Trade & The "Anti-Circumvention Tool"

First Activation: The EU is finally activating its Anti-circumvention tool, prohibiting exports of CNC machines and radios to high-risk jurisdictions.

Import/Export Bans: New restrictions on metals, chemicals, and critical minerals (worth over €570 million) and exports ranging from rubber to cybersecurity services.

⚖️ 4. Legal Safeguards for EU Companies

Crucially, the package proposes stronger legal protections for EU firms against IP rights violations or unfair expropriation in Russia resulting from abusive court rulings.

🗓️ The date of the opinion is probably also the date on which the GAoT suspended, for the time being, taking decisions in pending applications.
