The Indian Navy has launched Operation “Urja Suraksha,” deploying frontline warships, including destroyers, across the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
Launched in late March 2026, Operation Urja Suraksha (Energy Security) is a high-stakes maritime mission by the Indian Navy to secure the country’s energy supply lines.
Here are the quick key points:
Objective
* Energy Lifeline: To ensure the safe transit of Indian-flagged vessels carrying critical energy resources (Crude Oil, LNG, and LPG) from the Persian Gulf.
* Risk Mitigation: Protecting merchant ships from escalating tensions in West Asia, specifically around the Strait of Hormuz, which has faced blockades and threats of underwater mines.
Operational Details
* Deployment: More than five frontline warships, including destroyers and frigates, are stationed in the Gulf of Oman and the North Arabian Sea.
* Layered Security: The Navy provides a "security umbrella" that includes physical escorts, real-time monitoring, and electronic warfare protection.
* Beyond Escorting: Warships provide route-specific guidance and precise navigational support to help merchant crews avoid high-risk zones and potential minefields.
* Discreet Execution: The operation is being conducted with "calibrated precision and minimal publicity" to maintain safety and diplomatic balance in the region.
Key Successes
* Vessels Escorted: High-priority vessels like the LPG carriers Pine Gas and Jag Vasant (carrying ~92,000 tonnes of cooking gas) have already been safely guided to Indian ports.
* Other Ships: The Navy has also successfully protected the Shivalik, Nanda Devi, and the crude tanker Jag Laadki.
* Identification: Indian vessels have reportedly used specific identification signals (e.g., "PINE GAS INDIAN SHIP") to clearly distinguish themselves in the conflict zone.
Strategic Significance
* Economic Stability: Secures billions of dollars in trade; even a month's delay in imports could cost India upwards of $10 billion.
* Regional Role: Reinforces India’s standing as a "net security provider" in the Indian Ocean Region.
