Nearly 600 people lost a combined total of over $37 million in cryptocurrency, all because of a 21-year-old named Evan Light. Light from Lebanon, Indiana, allegedly teamed up with others to hack an investment holding company in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in February 2022. He stole their personal information and crypto holdings, then tried to cover his tracks by funneling the stolen money through online mixers and gambling sites. But authorities were on his trail, and Light eventually admitted his guilt to charges of cyber fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and money laundering. He faces up to 20 years in prison for each charge and could be ordered to pay restitution to the victims he wronged.
