VP Kamala Harris and President Biden call Trump and congratulate him on election victory
Vice President Kamala Harris called President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on winning the 2024 presidential election, according to a senior Harris aide.
She discussed the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being a president for all Americans, according to the aide.
President Joe Biden will address the nation on Thursday to discuss the election results and the transition, according to the White House.
Earlier in the day, the president called Harris to congratulate her on her historic campaign and Trump to congratulate him on his victory.
He also invited Trump to meet with him in the White House. The staff will coordinate a specific date in the near future, the White House said.

Biden to meet with Trump at the White House 4 years after being denied same honor
President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump will meet on Wednesday in the Oval Office after years of bitter rivalry, and after Trump denied Biden the same honor when he became president.
Biden offered congratulations and an invitation to the White House to Trump, four years after an acrimonious presidential transition marked by Trump’s refusal to concede defeat and after repeated debunked claims from Trump that the 2020 election was stolen. Trump broke with a number of ceremonial traditions as Biden took office, including skipping the inauguration in Washington, just weeks after he incited a mob to attack the U. S. Capitol and block certification of the election.
The meeting scheduled for next week comes after Biden has said for years that Trump was a threat to American democracy and that Biden's ultimately failed quest to stop Trump represented a battle for the soul of the nation.

75 people got E. coli after eating at McDonald's: How can you avoid it?
Dozens of people across 13 states have become sick after eating McDonald’s Quarter Pounders contaminated with E. coli.
At least 75 people fell ill from the bacterial infection and one person died in Colorado from the O157:H7 strain of E. coli, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday. McDonald’s attributed the illnesses to slivered onions, and the Food and Drug Administration indicated that onions might have been the source of the outbreak.
Latest on investigation
Federal regulators are determining whether slivered onions or beef patties in Quarter Pounder burgers caused the outbreak, the CDC said.
Based on information available for 61 of the 75 people who got sick, the CDC said Friday 22 had been hospitalized and two developed a serious condition from the bacteria that can cause kidney failure. These cases began occurring in late September and continued through Oct. 10.

Election 2024 live updates: Supreme Court rejects RFK Jr.; Melania Trump speaks out
Just one week until former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris face off on Election Day.
Trump on Tuesday evening will hold a rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, located about 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The former president is looking to notch a victory in the Keystone State, after he won Pennsylvania in the 2016 presidential election but lost it in 2020.
Harris is in the nation's capital on Tuesday. She's set to deliver a "closing argument" for her campaign at the Ellipse, the same spot where Trump gave a fiery speech nearly four years ago before a crowd of his supporters stormed the U. S. Capital on Jan. 6, 2021.
Although former President George W. Bush is not endorsing anyone, his daughter Barbara Bush hit the campaign trail for Harris on Tuesday, while former First Lady Melania Trump defended her husband in a rare TV interview.
After hundreds of ballots were burned in an attack on ballot boxes in and around Portland, Oregon, on Monday, voting rights activists on Tuesday reassured voters than voting by mail remains secure. Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also lost before the Supreme Court on Tuesday in his bid to get his name removed from ballots in the battleground states of Wisconsin and Michigan.
Keep up with the USA Today Network's live coverage from the campaign trail.

Harris leads Trump in Wisconsin and Michigan, tied in Pennsylvania, new CNN polls show
Democratic nominee Kamala Harris leads Republican rival Donald Trump in Wisconsin and Michigan, and is tied with the former president in Pennsylvania, according to new CNN polls of the three so-called "blue wall" Rust Belt states that could decide next week's election.
In Michigan, Harris leads Trump 48%-43% among the state's likely voters, while Harris is ahead of the former president 51%-45% in Wisconsin, the polls released Wednesday found. Both leads are outside the surveys' margins of errors. Harris and Trump are tied in Pennsylvania at 48% apiece, a third CNN poll found.
The polls were conducted Oct. 23 to 28. The Pennsylvania and Michigan polls have margins of errors of plus or minus 4.7 percentage points, and the Wisconsin poll has a margin of error of 4.8 percentage points.
In an election defined by a historically wide gender gap, the Wisconsin and Pennsylvania polls found Harris faring better among women voters and Trump among male voters. Harris leads Wisconsin's likely women voters 59%-38%, and Trump leads Wisconsin's likely male voters 53%-41, the poll found. In Pennsylvania, Harris leads women voters 49%-46%, while Trump leads male voters 50%-46%
But in Michigan, CNN found Harris and Trump tied with male voters at 44%, while Harris leads among female voters in the state 49%-41%.

Russian smear of Tim Walz hits internet ahead of US election
U. S. intelligence officials say Russia is behind a fake video smearing Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz with false sexual abuse allegations as part of an election interference effort favoring Donald Trump that will continue after Nov. 5.
The content, including baseless allegations from the Minnesota governor’s time as a high school teacher, was fabricated and then boosted online and across social media by operatives working for the Kremlin, said an official with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
"The intelligence community assesses that Russian influence actors created and amplified content alleging inappropriate activity committed by the Democratic vice presidential candidate during his earlier career," the ODNI official told reporters Tuesday.

Israel says it killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar
Israel said Thursday that after a year-long pursuit it killed Hamas' military leader Yahya Sinwar, regarded as the architect of the militant group's Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.
"Today we have settled the score," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a recorded statement in which he vowed to continute the war in Gaza until all the remaining Israeli hostages taken by Hamas were returned.
The Hamas attacks on Oct. 7 last year targeted communities in southern Israel. About 1,200 people were killed. A further 251 were kidnapped to Gaza. The attacks resulted in Israel launching a war in Gaza, meant to wipe out Hamas, that has killed more than 42,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry

Young people are smoking less (including e-cigs.) One product is on the rise.
Young people are smoking tobacco less than they have in a generation, a new study showed.
A survey of U. S. high school and middle school students found that the decline in tobacco use stemmed from a drop in the number of kids using e-cigarettes, still the preferred product among youth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study published Thursday.
In 2024, 1 in 12 middle and high school students, or about 2.25 million youth, were estimated to have used a tobacco product in the last 30 days, compared to about 2.8 million children who said they smoked in 2023. The numbers were higher among high school students, 10% of whom said they regularly used tobacco products. Among middle school kids, 5% said they smoked tobacco.

US investigates leak on intelligence about Israel's Iran attack plans: Updates
An investigation is underway into the "very concerning" leak of classified U. S. intelligence documents detailing Israel’s plans for a retaliatory strike on Iran, House Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday.
Johnson told CNN's State of the Union he would receive a briefing on the probe later Sunday. "There’s some serious allegations being made there," Johnson said. "We’re following it closely."
The documents, revealed on the Telegram messaging app last week, appear to have been prepared by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. They describe U. S. interpretations of Israeli Air Force and Navy planning using satellite imagery from Oct. 15-16. The Pentagon said it is looking into the leak.
