(Question) A person started a four-rak‘ah Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ. During the third rak‘ah, the time of zawāl ‘urfī began, so he ended the prayer by making salām in the third rak‘ah. Now, must he make up Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ specifically, or would a general nafl suffice? Also, how many rak‘ahs must he make up—two or four?
(Answer) If he had already sat for the duration of tashahhud after two rak‘ahs, then he will make up two rak‘ahs; otherwise, he will make up four rak‘ahs. It is not necessary to intend Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ specifically; the intention of general nafl prayer will suffice. And Allah knows best.

(Question) A person began a journey of about 2000 km after Fajr on 14 March, and he plans to return home before Maghrib on 29 March. During this period, he will stay in one place from Maghrib of 14 March until Fajr of 29 March. In this situation, should he perform qaṣr or complete prayers? And what is the ruling regarding Tarāwīḥ?
(Answer) In the described situation, the duration from Maghrib of 14 March to Fajr of 29 March does not amount to a full fifteen days, rather it is less than that. Therefore, the person will still be considered a traveller (musāfir) according to Sharī‘ah. Hence, he will perform qaṣr, meaning he will pray two rak‘ahs instead of four for the obligatory prayers that normally consist of four rak‘ahs. However, Tarāwīḥ is not shortened for a traveller; therefore, he should perform the full twenty rak‘ahs of Tarāwīḥ during Ramadan. And Allah knows best.

(Question) A cab driver sometimes has to travel to areas where there is no mosque nearby, and because of local conditions he fears praying openly in public places. In such situations, to avoid missing the prayer, he performs the prayer sitting inside his car. Is this permissible?
(Answer) It is obligatory to perform farḍ prayers while standing, therefore performing a farḍ prayer while sitting in a car is not valid under normal circumstances. However, if there is a genuine fear of harm or danger and it is not possible to get out of the car to pray, then in such a state of necessity it will be permissible to pray inside the car according to one’s ability. Nevertheless, he must repeat those prayers later while standing. And Allah knows best.
