Self-teaching
Read the following passage about famous self-taught individuals.
Many influential figures in history achieved remarkable success despite receiving little or no formal education. These self-taught individuals often relied on curiosity, discipline, and access to limited resources to develop their knowledge and skills.
One notable example is Leonardo da Vinci, who, although he had some basic schooling, largely educated himself through observation and experimentation. His notebooks reveal a mind constantly questioning the natural world, from human anatomy to engineering principles. Similarly, Abraham Lincoln grew up in poverty and had less than a year of formal schooling. Nevertheless, he became a skilled lawyer by studying borrowed books and eventually rose to lead a nation during one of its most challenging periods.
Another compelling case is Michael Faraday, one of the most important scientists in the history of physics. Born into a poor family, Faraday received only a basic education and worked as a bookbinder in his youth. However, his exposure to scientific texts sparked a deep interest in chemistry and electricity. Through persistent self-study and attending public lectures, he eventually made groundbreaking discoveries in electromagnetism, laying the foundations for modern electrical engineering.
In contemporary times, Elon Musk offers a modern example of self-directed learning. Although Musk holds formal degrees in physics and economics, much of his expertise in aerospace, energy, and artificial intelligence comes from independently reading technical manuals, scientific papers, and experimenting on his own. His approach demonstrates that curiosity and self-motivation remain crucial for innovation, even in highly technical fields.
These examples illustrate that while formal education provides structure, it is not the only path to intellectual growth. Self-taught individuals often develop strong independent thinking skills, driven by intrinsic motivation rather than external pressure.
