Barcelona and Madrid: not rivals, but partners for the future
In 2026, Barcelona and Madrid are talking not just about differences, but shared challenges: urbanisation, economic leadership, tourism, migration, and climate. In Catalonia’s capital, a new series of city dialogues has kicked off, focusing on how both metropolises can learn from each other.
Development plans: Barcelona is updating its Plan Director Urbanístico Metropolitano, Madrid has its Sueña Madrid project. Both cities are seeking a balance between growth and social cohesion. Key topics: renovating old districts, affordable housing, and integrating migrants.
Tourism is a big one—how to keep quality of life with so many visitors? And, of course, tackling climate change: green spaces, sustainable mobility, energy efficiency 🏙️🌱

Teachers in Catalonia get a pay rise, but tensions are running high!
Catalonia’s decided: school teachers are getting a one-off bonus — €839.02 for primaria, €857.92 for secundaria. Money lands in May, for concertada it’s split in parts. €134 million set aside for this. Night shifts in colonias now pay €50, costing the budget another €6-10 million.
But USTEC’s not happy with the deal — they’ve launched mass protests and strikes. 600 schools threaten to skip convivencias next year. Unions want new talks and are already planning more huelgas: 90% of teachers polled back the protests, 58% want to ramp up the pressure.
Authorities promise a “helping hand”, but the conflict’s far from over.

Protest in the centre: city hall workers demand justice!
Around 300 municipal staff in Barcelona took to the streets, highlighting lack of resources and voicing anger at the new work deal from Jaume Collboni’s team. Social services, feminisms, OAC, nursery and library workers all joined in.
Main gripe: unfair rollout of the 35-hour week, less flexibility, and worsening conditions in 'women’s' sectors. The protest started at plaza Universitat and ended at city hall on plaza Sant Jaume, where they read out a manifesto and chanted: “Collboni, cabrón, queremos negociación!” 😡
Demands: separate talks for directos, equal hours, rights restored, more staff, stop externalisations, pay rises, and resignation of IMSS management.

Barcelona’s libraries on strike: what about Sant Jordi?
A major library workers’ strike kicks off in Barcelona! 📚 Staff are unhappy with the new city agreement, saying it’s made things worse: skeleton crews, 11-hour shifts, no work-life balance, less IT support, and poor pay for dealing with vulnerable visitors.
Protests began with a partial walkout and the occupation of Biblioteca Sarrià – J. V. Foix. On 21 April, a 24-hour strike is planned, with Diputación de Barcelona libraries joining in. From 25 April, open-ended Saturday stoppages in all 280 provincial libraries!
Coming up: daily actions—rallies at Sant Miquel, a march on Portal de l’Àngel, protests at City Hall. If the council doesn’t budge, more strikes could hit before exam season.

Water instead of tarmac: a new oasis on Avenida Mistral!
Summer 2026 in Barcelona is no joke, especially in packed Eixample. But now Sant Antoni locals have a lifesaver: a modern water play zone is opening on Avenida Mistral! 💦
Between Entença and Rocafort, a 42 m² area with dynamic fountains and sprinklers is coming. The project costs €220,000 and is designed for kids of all abilities—with anti-slip flooring, gentle slopes, and full accessibility. Safety barriers will be installed.
Water use will be smart: the play area runs only June to September, switched on manually, max 10 m³ per day. It’s part of the city’s climate shelter network—by year’s end, there’ll be around 230, including libraries, museums, and shady parks.

Tourists sleeping on the stairs: Standbyme Ramblas scandal!
Nearly 50 tourists found themselves without rooms at Standbyme Ramblas in central Barcelona. Their bookings via http://Booking.com/ weren’t found, and there was zero help from the service, hotel, or police. People, including kids as young as 3-4, had to sleep on stairs and in corridors. 😱
One of those affected, Bruno Queitano, shared his frustration: “The city’s packed, no one’s helping, and Booking just took the money and went silent.”
Things got worse as two weeks ago http://Booking.com/ admitted a cyberattack, letting hackers access client data: names, addresses, phone numbers, and booking details. 🕵️♂️

Queues and hope: mass legalisation of migrants kicks off in Spain
Spain’s long-awaited migrant legalisation process has begun. Within hours, massive queues formed outside Correos, Seguridad Social and La Farga in L'Hospitalet. Nearly 20,000 applications in Catalonia alone, and over 13,500 online across the country on day one! 🕗
Migrants are camping overnight at centres, desperate not to miss their chance. Juan from Colombia waited 15 hours for the final stamp, Edgar Hernández from Honduras was first at La Farga after a night on the floor. People are hoping for work permits and a shot at staying legally.
In Manresa, complaints about lack of info and confusion with paperwork. Key: you need proof you were here before 1 January, no criminal record, and sometimes a vulnerability certificate.

Ghost Station: 80 Years Since Fernando Opened
This April 2026 marks 80 years since one of Barcelona’s most mysterious metro stops — Fernando (Ferran) — opened. It launched on 15 April 1946 on the I Gran Metro de Barcelona line (Lesseps–Liceu), but only lasted 22 years! 🚇
The station sat between calle Ferran and La Rambla, with a single platform, white walls and long wooden benches. Its opening was low-key — just a modest newspaper notice. The main issue? Too close to Liceu: only 145 metres away! In the 60s, after Gran Metro merged with Ferrocarril Transversal, Fernando was shut due to overlapping routes, and Drassanes soon opened.
Locals weren’t happy — they sent complaints to TMB and the council, but the station faded into history.

Plaça de Sants: the metro’s getting more accessible!
From 27 April 2026, major works kick off at plaça de Sants (L5) to boost accessibility. Until spring 2027, the link between L1 and L5 will be closed—so you’ll need to use alternative routes. Around 12,000 people change lines here every weekday!
The works include expanding the entrance hall, installing new lifts and raising platforms. Investment: €15.2 million. At the same time, there’s a project to revamp the square and add new entrances and ventilation.
Phase two: adapting the L1 station. Barcelona’s metro is already 96.3% accessible, but Verdaguer, plaça de Sants L1 and Urquinaona are still to come. Total investment: €109 million. 🚧

Noisy neighbours: what’s bothering Barcelona locals?
A fresh ECAMB-2024 survey shows 90% of AMB residents get on fine, but nearly 10% have had run-ins. Top gripe? Noise (46.1%): loud music, DIY, pets. Other reasons: rows (14.7%) and dirty stairwells (11.6%).
Most sort things face-to-face (72.1%), less often via the building manager (53.6%) or police (30.4%). Usually, it just ruins your mood—serious trouble is rare.
Neighbourly ties are weak: mostly just a quick hello (63.8%). Flat owners and old-timers chat more, while younger folks and newcomers keep to themselves.
The smaller the flat and the worse the building, the more rows. In tiny flats, problems are twice as common!
The survey’s worrying: 9.8% feel lonely, especially the young and women.
