Hundreds killed, injured in one day: Massive Israeli strikes in Lebanon warrant investigation for war crimes and crimes against humanity

The large-scale Israeli attack on Lebanon, which caused heavy civilian casualties and extensive damage to civilian objects, warrants investigation for war crimes and crimes against humanity, given their apparently indiscriminate or disproportionate nature and indications of a systematic attack on the civilian population.

Preliminary field data on Israel’s intensive airstrikes on Beirut and other areas on Wednesday, 8 April, indicate that more than 1,300 people were killed or injured, with dozens still trapped or missing under the rubble. The attacks reflect a pattern of using highly destructive, indiscriminate force in densely populated civilian areas, in violation of international humanitarian law.

“Another genocide behind walls”: New report documents testimonies of rape and sexual violence in Israeli prisons

Sexual violence against Palestinians in Israeli prisons and detention centres constitutes a de facto state policy, used as a tool of subjugation and destruction, with a sharp escalation and the removal of prior restraints since 7 October 2023, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said in a report.

The new report, titled “Another genocide behind walls”, documents widespread patterns of sexual violence, including rape, against detainees from the Gaza Strip, describing it as a tool of destruction aimed at breaking individual and collective will and inflicting severe physical and psychological harm. The report cites direct sexual assault, assault with objects, and torture targeting the genitals, as well as organised practices such as filming and the presence of multiple security personnel during assaults, which reinforces evidence of the institutional and systematic nature of these crimes.

Dangerous precedent: Israel carries out mass displacement in southern Lebanon, threatens towns hosting the displaced

The Israeli army is committing a complex crime and setting a dangerous precedent by enforcing illegal displacement policies in Lebanon. This involves forcing civilians to leave their homes and threatening residents of other areas with bombing or destruction of their towns if they host displaced people.

The Israeli unlawful threat, directly communicated to local officials in several villages in southern Lebanon to bomb and destroy their towns unless a specific sect of displaced persons was forced to leave, demonstrates a dangerous pattern of using unlawful destruction and death threats against civilians and their homes. It coerces civilian communities into acts against other civilians, going beyond standard military warnings to manipulating social behaviour under duress, inflaming local tensions, threatening civil peace, and creating hotspots of internal conflict.
