Palestinians remained trapped in Gaza, unable to attend Hajj.

As Muslims from around the world gather in Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage next week, thousands of Palestinians remain unable to attend for the third consecutive year due to Israel keeping border crossings closed.

Before October 2023, 3,000+ pilgrims from Gaza crossed through the Rafah crossing into Egypt, before flying from Cairo to Saudi.

Gaza’s 2026 Hajj quota was reassigned to Palestine’s occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The South Lakes Islamic Centre, otherwise known as the Lake District mosque in Cumbria, is making a final appeal to complete the construction of the masjid.

The building is now standing and close to completion, but work still needs to be done before the mosque can be fully open and operational. The project has faced a campaign of hate and harassment from far-right activists, but it has also received significant local support.

The Kirklees Independents Group has confirmed it will not support a Reform led administration, setting out a clear and principled stance following the May 2026 elections.

In a council where no party holds overall control, the group has made it clear that the future of Kirklees must be built on genuine change, fair governance, and delivering real improvements for local communities.

Speaking on behalf of the Muslim-led group, Cllr Habiban Zaman said:
“Our message is clear, we will not support Reform. The people of Kirklees voted for change, and our responsibility is to deliver that change in a way that genuinely improves people’s lives. We are here to stand up for our communities for cleaner streets, safer neighbourhoods, proper investment and real accountability at the council. We are ready to work constructively with others who share that commitment, but we will not compromise on what our residents expect and deserve.”

Labour have lost control of Blackburn and Darwen, going from 27 to 20 seats and losing their majority after decades.

The Independent Muslim-led party 4BwD recorded great gains going from 13 to 16 seats. Reform UK also recorded a breakthrough going from zero to 9 seats.

With 26 seats needed for a majority, no party can govern alone — meaning 4BwD's Mustafa Desai now holds the balance of power and gets to decide who leads the council.

Zionist Reform UK councillor Alan Mendoza has lost his Westminster council seat in the local elections.

Mendoza — head of the Jewish National Fund UK (JNF UK) — was defeated in the Abbey Road ward by the Conservatives.

The JNF UK donated over £1m to what Israeli outlet Haaretz described as Israel's "largest militia".

It has also supported illegal Israeli settlements, and has Benjamin Netanyahu listed as an honorary patron.

Labour has been handed the Newham mayoralty by vote splitting.

Forhad Hussain was elected in the London borough with over 25,000 votes.

Mehmood Mirza, of the Newham Independents, received over 20,000 votes and Areeq Chowdhury of the Greens got around 19,000 votes.

Had the Greens stood down, Mirza would have most likely won comfortably.

But the Greens say their voters preferred a more progressive candidate and they deserved the chance to vote for one.

Gaza will need an estimated £53.5 billion for reconstruction over the next decade, according to a joint report by the EU, UN and the World Bank.
