Sydney Marie Figueroa was a healthy, active 14-year-old from Pennsylvania. She received two doses of the Gardasil HPV vaccine at ages 11 and 12.

A coroner has ruled that "A man died as a direct result of having the whooping cough vaccine as a baby," following an inquest into the death of 57-year-old Steven Patrick Knott.

In 1969, at six months old, Steven received his second dose of the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine. Within 24 hours, he suffered a grand mal seizure—his first of many.

Area Coroner Emma Mather noted that Steven was "entirely well before this" vaccine dose. Medical records from 1994 show his mother sought the vaccine's batch number, eventually leading to a "successful lawsuit against the Wellcome Foundation" for compensation.

On December 9, Steven suffered a seizure at his supported living home in Blackburn. Despite immediate CPR from carers and emergency services, he was pronounced dead.
The coroner recorded the cause of death as cardiac arrest triggered by a seizure, stemming from the pertussis vaccination.
