🌊 In 2015, scientists working at the "Station ALOHA" research site, located 100 kilometers north of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, USA, in the North Pacific Ocean, identified Prochlorococcus marinus as the dominant marine microbe in surface waters. Water samples at 25 meters depth revealed these cyanobacteria, measuring less than 0.6 micrometers, accounted for up to half of all photosynthetic plankton cells. Prochlorococcus thrives in nutrient-poor, sunlit water, using specialized pigments to capture blue light and fuel the region’s primary production. Station ALOHA is positioned at 22°45′N 158°00′W in the subtropical ocean gyre. 🐳

🌊 In March 2012, scientists exploring the Blanco Fracture Zone, a major transform fault off the coast of Oregon, USA, northeast Pacific Ocean, captured seismic data revealing fresh fault scarps and evidence of recent seafloor movement where the Pacific Plate slides past the Juan de Fuca Plate. Remotely operated vehicles filmed vertical cliffs up to 30 meters high and jagged basalt rubble fields at depths of 2,800 to 3,000 meters. This underwater fault—stretching from 44°N 130°W—displays frequent earthquakes and visible offsets, making it a rare deepwater showcase of active plate boundary dynamics. 🐳

🌊 In August 2018, researchers at False Bay, just south of Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa, Indian Ocean, recorded an unprecedented disappearance of great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) from the bay’s food web. At Seal Island, where cage-diving boats usually observed white sharks hunting Cape fur seals, long-term surveys showed none present during 2018—an abrupt shift traced to the arrival of a pair of orca whales (Orcinus orca). The orcas, identified as Port and Starboard, were seen preying on white sharks, leaving behind only livers and causing the sharks to abandon the area. False Bay’s Seal Island is precisely located at 34°08′S 18°35′E. 🐳

🌊 In July 2015, divers at Raja Ampat’s famous “The Passage” dive site, between Waigeo and Gam Islands, West Papua, Indonesia, filmed a rare spectacle: a massive bloom of the upside-down jellyfish Mastigias papua etpisoni. At 3 to 7 meters depth, thousands of these jellyfish clustered over sandy shallows, pulsing gently with their bell facing down and frilly oral arms dappled in green symbiotic algae exposed to the sun. Scientists noted this species relies on sunlight to fuel the algae, producing food for the jellyfish in clear equatorial waters. The Passage’s coordinates are approximately 0°27′S 130°27′E within the Indonesian Coral Triangle. 🐳

🌊 The harlequin filefish (Oxymonacanthus longirostris) at Batu Bolong dive site, off Komodo Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, exhibits an extraordinary camouflage adaptation. Living among Acropora coral branches at 10 to 18 meters depth, these slender fish not only match the colors of coral polyps but also absorb coral compounds into their skin, causing them to smell chemically identical to their coral home. This “chemical camouflage” fools coral-dwelling predators, particularly coral-feeding crabs, allowing the filefish to move undetected. Batu Bolong is located at 8°33′55″S 119°34′12″E in Komodo National Park. 🐳

🌊 At Lizard Island’s "Coconut Beach" reef, located in the northern section of the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia, a single colony of staghorn coral (Acropora microphthalma) became a living laboratory for coral research after the 2016 bleaching event. Scientists mapped the colony’s gradual recovery at 4 meters depth, observing how certain branches survived by harboring heat-tolerant symbiotic algae, while neighboring colonies perished. The resilient staghorn showed visible regrowth tips within 18 months, with returning damselfish and gobies reoccupying its branches. Coconut Beach reef sits at 14°40′S, 145°27′E, just off Lizard Island’s windward shore. 🐳

🌊 In January 2018, marine biologists at Península Valdés, off Puerto Madryn, Chubut Province, Argentina, Southwest Atlantic Ocean, filmed southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) using a remarkable kelp-rubbing behavior. At the “El Doradillo” coastal site, just 400 meters from shore in 8 to 12 meters of water, mother-calf pairs were documented rolling and gliding through dense beds of Macrocystis pyrifera, appearing to scratch loose skin against the kelp fronds. This behavior was seen repeatedly over several weeks and observed almost exclusively among nursing females and their calves. El Doradillo lies at 42°41′S 65°01′W. 🐳

🌊 In September 2021, researchers at Mombasa Marine National Park, off the coast of Mombasa city, Kenya, western Indian Ocean, documented the rapid recovery of Acropora coral species after the establishment of strict no-fishing zones. Underwater transects at "Nyali Reef" at depths of 3 to 8 meters revealed live coral cover had increased from less than 15% in 2010 to nearly 45% within a decade. Recovery was credited to the exclusion of destructive fishing gears and an influx of herbivorous fish, such as the orange-lined triggerfish (Balistapus undulatus), which kept algae in check. The Nyali Reef site is positioned at 4°1′44″S, 39°43′54″E, bordering the Mombasa coastline. 🐳

🌊 In May 2016, a remotely operated vehicle exploring the Whittard Canyon, about 320 kilometers southwest of Ireland in the northeast Atlantic Ocean, captured extraordinary footage of the deep-sea fish Barathronus maculatus. At a depth of 2,250 meters, this elusive species was filmed swimming just above the silty canyon floor, its elongated, ghostly white body flickering in the ROV’s lights. The fish’s spotted, semi-transparent skin reveals organs and internal pigments, an adaptation to extreme darkness. This marked the first confirmed sighting of B. maculatus in Whittard Canyon, precisely at 48°36′N 11°33′W. 🐳

🌊 On June 8, 2023, scientists at the "Kaneohe Bay Sandbar" on the windward coast of Oahu, Hawai‘i, USA, North Pacific Ocean, recorded a massive bloom of the filamentous cyanobacteria Lyngbya majuscula. At depths of 1 to 2 meters, thick mats draped the sandy bottom, smothering native seagrasses and deterring green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) grazing. Nutrient analysis linked this toxic bloom to heavy runoff after spring storms, which fed unusually high nitrogen and phosphorus into the bay. Lyngbya mats here have been measured covering over 5 hectares during peak years. 🐳
