New researsh shows ice is slippery because of electrical charges — not pressure and friction.

For almost 200 years, the prevailing explanation for ice’s slipperiness was that friction or pressure from a skate, boot, or tire melted a microscopic film of water on the surface, creating a lubricating layer. A new study from Saarland University has overturned that long-standing idea.

Instead, the true cause lies in the electric fields generated by molecular dipoles. When any object contacts ice, the partial charges in its own molecules interact with the highly ordered dipole arrangement of water molecules in the ice crystal. This electrostatic tug-of-war loosens the topmost layer of the ice lattice, transforming it into a thin, disordered, quasi-liquid film—without any need for heat or significant pressure.

Remarkably, this self-lubrication mechanism works even at temperatures approaching absolute zero, where thermal energy is virtually absent and conventional pressure-melting or frictional heating theories completely break down. In those extreme conditions, ice remains slippery simply because its surface molecules are electrically vulnerable.

The discovery fundamentally rewrites our understanding of one of nature’s most familiar phenomena. Beyond settling a centuries-old debate, it has immediate practical implications: from designing better winter tires and non-slip surfaces that actually work on ice, to engineering superior skis, ice skates, and even advanced nanomaterials that perform reliably in cryogenic environments.

By revealing the dominant role of intermolecular electric forces, the research opens entirely new avenues for controlling friction and adhesion at the molecular scale—potentially transforming fields from winter sports equipment to aerospace and nanotechnology.

It’s physically impossible for an ant to fall to its death.

Thanks to their tiny size and incredibly low mass compared to their surface area, ants reach terminal velocity almost instantly when falling. This is the maximum speed they can possibly achieve, and it’s harmlessly slow.

Even from a height of 100 feet or more, an ant hits this safe speed in just a few seconds and then floats downward at a pace no stronger than a light breeze, no matter how far it falls.

This superpower comes from the perfect balance between gravity and air resistance (drag). As speed increases, drag grows until it exactly cancels out the ant’s weight, creating a gentle, constant descent. Some observations even suggest that the longer they fall, the higher their survival rate becomes.

In essence, ants have mastered the physics of falling. What would be deadly for larger animals is nothing more than a minor tumble for them — a brilliant example of nature’s adaptation at the smallest scales.

The Sun has only 22 galactic orbits left.

Earth races around the Sun at ~67,000 mph (107,000 km/h), giving us our familiar 365.25-day year and changing seasons.

But the Sun is in motion too—hurtling through the Milky Way at ~514,000 mph (828,000 km/h) on a grand orbit around the galactic center. One complete lap, known as a cosmic year, takes roughly 225–230 million years.

When the Sun finished its most recent galactic orbit, the earliest dinosaurs were just beginning to roam Earth.

Since its birth ~4.6 billion years ago, our star has completed about 20 such orbits.

Researchers have found a way to let the human brain see an entirely new color.

A team at the University of California, Berkeley, has achieved what was long considered impossible: the discovery of “olo,” a color that lies completely outside the natural human visual spectrum.

Using a revolutionary technique called Oz, scientists deployed high-precision lasers to target and stimulate thousands of specific medium-wavelength cone cells in the retina.
