How many shrines are there in Muslim countries?

We asked this question to ChatGPT, and although it is just an estimation and it also states that there is no agreed number of shrines in Muslim countries, more than 100,000 shrines does not sound that unrealistic after all.

And the Muslims almost never speak about this issue.

If something this evil exists on this scale, then it deserves serious attention.

Yet, the focus is often only on one thing, or on trivial matters.

And then we have the audacity to complain about the bad state of our Ummah…

Never speaking against Shirk, never speaking about Tawhid… yet, we demand success.

The light of guidance

قال شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية رحمه الله:

كَمَا أَنَّ نُورَ الْعَيْنِ لَا يُرَى إلَّا مَعَ ظُهُورِ نُورٍ قُدَّامَهُ فَكَذَلِكَ نُورُ الْعَقْلِ لَا يَهْتَدِي إلَّا إذَا طَلَعَتْ عَلَيْهِ شَمْسُ الرِّسَالَةِ.

فَلِهَذَا كَانَ تَبْلِيغُ الدِّينِ مِنْ أَعْظَمِ فَرَائِضِ الْإِسْلَامِ. وَكَانَ مَعْرِفَةُ مَا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ بِهِ رَسُولَهُ وَاجِبًا عَلَى جَمِيعِ الْأَنَامِ.

وَاَللَّهُ سُبْحَانَهُ بَعَثَ مُحَمَّدًا بِالْكِتَابِ وَالسُّنَّةِ، وَبِهِمَا أَتَمَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِهِ الْمِنَّةَ. قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَلِأُتِمَّ نِعْمَتِي عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ﴾

مجموع الفتاوى (١/‏٦)

Sheikh Al Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

Just as the light of the eye is not seen except with the appearance of a light in front of it, likewise the light of the intellect is not guided except when the sun of the Message rises upon it.

For this reason, conveying the Religion is among the greatest obligations of Islam. And knowing what Allah commanded His Messenger with is obligatory upon all of mankind.

And Allah sent Muhammad with the Book and the Sunnah, and through both of them, He completed the favour upon his Ummah. Allah the Most High said: {And so that I may complete My favor upon you, and that you may be guided.}

Who said that you must follow a madhhab?!

قال ابن القيم رحمه الله:

ولا يلزم أحدًا قطُّ أن يتمذهب بمذهب رجل من الأمة بحيث يأخذ أقواله كلَّها، ويدع أقوال غيره.

وهذه بدعة قبيحة حدثت في الأمة، لم يقل بها أحد من أئمة الإسلام

وهم أعلى رتبةً، وأجلُّ قدرًا، وأعلم بالله ورسوله، من أن يُلزموا الناس بذلك.

وأبعَدُ منه قولُ من قال: يلزمه أن يتمذهب بمذهب عالم من العلماء.

وأبعَدُ منه قولُ من قال: يلزمه أن يتمذهب بأحد المذاهب الأربعة.

فيالله العجب! ماتت مذاهب أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ ومذاهب التابعين وتابعيهم وسائر أئمة الإسلام، وبطلت جملةً إلا مذاهبَ أربعة أنفس فقط من بين سائر الأئمة والفقهاء!

Ibn al Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

And it is not binding upon anyone at all to adhere to the madhhab of a man from the Ummah, such that he takes all of his statements and leaves the statements of others.

And this is an ugly innovation that occurred in the Ummah.

None of the Imams of Islam ever said it. And they are higher in rank, greater in status and more knowledgeable of Allah and His Messenger than to impose such a thing upon the people.

And worse than it (further from the truth) is the statement of the one who said: “It is binding upon a person to adhere to the madhhab of a scholar from the scholars.”

And even worse than it is the statement of the one who said: “It is binding upon a person to adhere to one of the four madhhabs.”

How astonishing! The madhhabs of the Sahabah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died out, as did the madhhabs of the Tabi’in, their followers and the rest of the Imams of Islam. All of them became invalid, except for the madhhabs of only four individuals from among all the Imams and the fuqaha!

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ.

O Allah, send Your Ṣalāh (praise, grace, honour, and mercy) upon Muḥammad and upon the family of Muḥammad, as You sent Your Ṣalāh (praise, grace, honour, and mercy) upon Ibrāhīm and upon the family of Ibrāhīm; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And bless Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, as You blessed Ibrāhīm and the family of Ibrāhīm; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.

Sheikh Abu al Fadl as Suway‘i, may Allah preserve him, said:

Some khutaba lengthen the Friday khutbah to forty minutes and some even reach an hour. This thing goes against the manhaj of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They imitate some of the khutaba and abandon the Sunnah of Al Mustafa ﷺ (The Chosen One).

You must adhere to the Sunnah and the manhaj of the Salaf, both in speech and in action.

If you were to say to those who, during the Friday khutbah, instead of listening to the khatib as they are commanded to, play games on their phones or scroll through their social media: “Why do you attend the Friday khutbah?”,

they would answer you: “Because Allah said” or “Because the Messenger ﷺ said”.

And this is one of the greatest calamities of our Ummah. For certain things, we apply “Because Allah said” or “Because the Messenger ﷺ said,” and as for the rest, “Because Allah said” or “Because the Messenger ﷺ said” completely disappears, or we simply do not know, or we do not want to know what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ have said.

Islam is something to be taken in its entirety and not partially or according to our desires.

And Allah is the One Whose help is sought.

You focus on the rulers... but how about yourself and your family?!

قال الشيخ الألباني رحمه الله:

ولا شك بأن الحكم لله وحده ولا شريك له في ذلك ولا في غيره، ولكنهم؛ منهم من يقلد مذهباً من المذاهب الأربعة اليوم، ثم يقول - عندما تأتيه السنة الصريحة الصحيحة- : هذا خلاف مذهبي! فأين الحكم بما أنزل الله في اتباع السنة؟!

ومنهم من تجده يعبد الله على الطرق الصوفية! فأين الحكم بما أنزل الله بالتوحيد؟! فهم يطالبون غيرهم بما لا يطالبون به أنفسهم ، إن من السهل جداً أن تطبق الحكم بما أنزل الله في عقيدتك، في عبادتك، في سلوكك، في دارك، في تربية أبنائك، في بيعك، في شرائك، بينما من الصعب جداً، أن تجبر أو تزيل ذلك الحاكم الذي يحكم في كثير من أحكامه بغير ما أنزل الله، فلماذا تترك الميسر إلى المعسر؟!

التوحيد أولاً يا دعاة الإسلام، ص. ٣٥

Sheikh Al Albani, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

And there is no doubt that the judgment (ruling) belongs to Allah Alone, and He has no partner in that nor in anything else. However, among (the people) are those who blindly follow one of the four madhhabs, then when a clear and authentic Sunnah reaches them, they say: “This is contrary to my madhhab!” So where is “ruling by what Allah has revealed” in following the Sunnah?!

And among them are those whom you find worshipping Allah upon the Sufi paths! So where is “ruling by what Allah has revealed” regarding Tawheed?! They demand from others what they do not demand of themselves! Indeed, it is very easy to apply the judgment of what Allah has revealed in your ‘Aqidah, in your worship, in your conduct, in your home, in raising (the education of) your children, in your selling and in your buying.

Meanwhile, it is very difficult to compel or remove that ruler who judges, in many of his rulings, by other than what Allah revealed. So why do you leave that which is easy for that which is difficult?!

Sheikh Abdus Salaam As Suhaymi, may Allah preserve him, said:

As for the believing (faithful), righteous, chaste and modest woman today, it is hoped that she will have the reward of fifty of the female Companions, for her patience, her outlasting (others) in patience and steadfastness in facing the storming fitan around her, such as moral decay, objections to the Laws of Allah, desires and doubts (shubuhat).

So glad tidings (congratulations) to those women who stand tall with their faith, their modesty, their chastity and who take pride in their hijab in obedience to their Lord and in accordance with the Sunnah of their Prophet.
