This is a partial translation and abridgement of Ibn Hisham's masterpiece called Mughni al-Labib 'an Kutub al-A'arib. I pray it benefits someone and entices him to get the actual book. I worked on this in the period of 2019-2021. The majority of it was checked back then by my Nahw teacher.

I deleted my Academia channel a while ago, but I have made a new one and reuploaded some of the papers that were on there, such as my partial translation of Kitab al-Tahara from al-Hidayah (Hanafi fiqh) and the translation of Sh. Mustafa Hamdu al-'Ulayaan's work on istigatha.

While reading and researching for the article on HCM, I found myself trying to articulate a point, so I’ll jot it down here as a way of organizing my thoughts (this point is also relevant to an upcoming review, which I hope to expand on, in shāʾ Allāh).
One of the real strengths of Western academia is its attention to intellectual history. Countless books and articles trace the trajectory of ideas and schools—how they spread into certain regions, how they declined, and how they interacted with political and social forces. To take a familiar example: Imām Abū Yūsuf’s appointment as chief judge was instrumental in the spread of the Ḥanafī school. By placing Ḥanafī judges in key positions, the school naturally became dominant in that region. This is undoubtedly true. But such accounts are often presented as though history were nothing more than contingent happenings. The implication is that if another Imām had been appointed, perhaps the Ḥanafī school would never have flourished.
Of course, counterfactuals can never be answered definitively. Yet what often goes missing in these discussions—understandably in non-Muslim scholarship, but more regrettably in Muslim discourse—is the recognition that ideas themselves carry weight. They are not neutral. They can be good or bad, compelling or unconvincing. Yes, the Ashʿarī school benefitted from strong leadership and state patronage, which contributed to its dominance. But would leading scholars across the centuries have adopted the Ashʿarī creed solely because of political convenience? Or was there also something inherently persuasive in Ashʿarism—its ability to hold together fidelity to revelation (athar) with the demands of rational inquiry? To overlook this dimension is to reduce intellectual history to mere politics, and to underestimate the enduring power of ideas.
An idea could be wrong, but the appeal of it is understandable. The goals of the Mu'tazilah and their arguments, one can see why they are appealing. When they clashed with Hadith and it's science, their responses were desperate (something which will be explained in the upcoming piece insha'Allah). So, a shift can be observed in Mu'tazili engagement with Hadith. An academic may put it down to X Mu'tazili running into a certain Sunni scholar, or the growth of Sunni madrasahs, or some other factor (which all may be true), but the idea being bad should also play a role in this discussion.

This is a great book with details that are relevant for the laity with regards to our belief. If anyone wants to teach creed to lay people, I believe that this is an excellent first book to use.

The teacher should ideally bring up Quran verses and relevant Hadiths to support mentioned creedal points. Wherever relevant, he should also employ reason (such as in the section regarding faith in Allah: why do we believe He exists in the first place?)

It's normally around the July/August time I get a lot of emails and messages seeking advice about further studies; should I got into Ifta, go abroad and study privately or in an institution, should I go and to a university and do a degree, should the degree be in Islamic studies or best to delve into another field, etc.

Of course, everyone has their own unique circumstances, so advice is given based on their situation. But one piece of advice is central, regardless of which route we choose to go down. An institution, a teacher, a course is only as good as we make it (I make obvious exemptions of studying under someone who is unqualified or incompetent).

You could be studying in a prestigious institution/university, or under some big names, but cut corners, spend time chilling with buddies or something else and you would achieve very little in terms of scholarly progress. And then someone else could be studying under a lesser known scholar or institution, but spends every free moment delving into books, taking notes, discussing knowledge etc. And their scholarly progress will be far greater, even if the former's CV on paper will be better. The CV can only act as a mask for so long until you are eventually caught out.

So, for anyone starting any courses this coming September or whenever, whether you are going abroad or just doing a couple of classes with a Shaykh, do not waste time. Listen to the classes attentively, engage if possible, and read all relevant material. So, even if you end up not making the best decision of where to go, the effort you make will make up for any regret insha'Allah.
