ليس من المروءة أن يخبر الرجل بِسِنِّهِ .. لأنه إن كان صغيراً استحقر، وإن كان كبيراً استهرم.

“It is not from manliness and dignity that a man informs others of his age, because if he is young he will be looked down upon, and if he is old he will be considered senile.”

Ibrāhīm ibn Adham (رحمه الله) said:

الحُزن حزنان: حزن لك، وحزن عليك.
فالحزن الذي هو لك:
حزنك على الآخرة وخَيْرها
والحزن الذي هو عليك:
حزنك على الدنيا وزينتها

“Sadness is of two types: a sadness that is for you, and a sadness that is against you.

The sadness that is for you is your sadness over the Hereafter and its goodness.

And the sadness that is against you is your sadness over the worldly life and its adornments.”

Abū Ḥāzim Salamah ibn Dīnār (رحمه الله) said:

اشتدت مؤنة الدين والدنيا

“The burden of the religion and the worldly life has become severe.”

قيل: وكيف؟!

It was said: “How is that?”

‏قال: أما الدين؛ فلا تجد عليه أعوانًا،

‏وأما الدنيا، فلا تمد يدك إلى شيء منها إلا وجدت فاجرًا قد سبقكَ إليه.

He replied: “As for the religion, then you do not find helpers upon it. And as for the worldly life, then you do not stretch your hand towards anything from it except that you find a wicked person has beaten you to it.”

Yaḥyā ibn Muʿādh (رحمه الله) said:

لا تتخذوا من القرناء إلّا ما فيه ثلاث خصال:

من حذَّرك غوائل الذنوب،
وعَرَّفك مدانس العيوب،
وسايرك إلى علَّام الغيوب.

“Do not take companions except those who possess three qualities:

One who warns you against the destructive consequences of sins, makes you recognise the filth of your faults, and accompanies you to the Knower of the unseen.”

العبد فأيهما غلب كان الآخر تبعا له.

“The worldly life and the Hereafter both come together in the heart of the servant. So whichever of the two prevails and dominates, the other becomes subordinate and follows it.”

‏إِذَا أَحَبَّ اللهُ عَبْدًا أَكْثَرَ غَمَّهُ، وَإِذَا أَبْغَضَ عَبْدًا وَسَّعَ عَلَيْهِ دُنْيَاهُ.

“Whenever Allah loves a servant, He increases his worries and concerns; and whenever He hates a servant, He expands his worldly life for him.”

لا تطلُب مِن النَّاس اليوم الخير، اطلب منهم كفَّ الأذى!؛ فمَن كفَّ أذاه عنك اليوم، فهو بمنزلة مَن كان يعطيك الجوائز!

“Do not seek goodness from the people today. Rather, seek from them that they withhold harm. For whoever withholds his harm from you today is like one who used to give you gifts.”

“When your power tempts you to wrong people, then remember the Power of Allah, the Exalted, over you. And remember that what you do to them will come to an end, while what comes back to you from it will remain.”

ما أحدثَ أحدٌ في العلم شيئاً إلاَّ سُئِل عنه يوم القيامة؛ فإنْ وافقَ السُّنَّة سَلِمَ و إلا فهو العطب

“Whoever introduces anything into knowledge will be questioned about it on the Day of Resurrection; if it conforms to the Sunnah, he is safe, otherwise it leads to ruin.”

Among the remarkable reports regarding a parent’s supplication for his child and the child benefiting from it:

It is reported from Imām al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ رحمه الله that he supplicated for his son ʿAlī, saying:

“اللهم إني اجتهدت أن أؤدِّب عليًا، فلم أقدر على تأديبه، فأدِّبه أنت لي”

‘O Allah, I have striven to discipline ʿAlī but I was unable to discipline him, so discipline him on my behalf.’”

So Allah answered his supplication, and this ʿAlī became one of the scholars of the Muslims and among the righteous, to the extent that some scholars would prefer him over his father in worship and fear of Allah.”

ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Mubārak رحمه الله said:

“خير الناس الفضيل، وخير منه ابنه علي”.

“Al-Fuḍayl is the best of the people, and better than him is his son ʿAlī.”

“Maintaining ties of kinship extends one’s lifespan, brings about love among one’s family, and increases one’s wealth.”

Al-Rabī‘ ibn Khuthaym (رحمه الله) said:

إذا تَكلّمتَ فاذْكُرْ سَمْعَ اللهِ إليكَ، وإذا هَمَمْتَ فاذْكُرْ عِلْمَهُ بك، وإذا نَظرْتَ فاذْكُر نَظرَه إليك، وإذا تَفكّرْتَ فاذْكُر اطِّلاعَه عليكَ؛ فإنّه يقولُ تعالى: {إِنَّ السَّمْعَ والبَصَرَ والفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُولَئِكَ كانَ عَنْهُ مَسْؤُولاً}

“Whenever you speak, remember that Allāh hears you. When you intend something, remember His knowledge of you. When you look, remember His seeing of you. When you reflect, remember His awareness of you. For indeed, He, the Most High, says: {Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart, all of these will be questioned about}.”

‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ūd (رضي الله عنه) said:

إنكم في ممر الليل والنهار في آجال منقوصة، وأعمال محفوظة، والموت يأتي بغتة، من زرع خيراً يوشك أن يحصد رغبة، ومن زرع شراً يوشك أن يحصد ندامة، ولكل زارع مثل ما زرع، ولا يسبق بطيء بحظه، ولا يدرك حريص ما لم يقدر له، فمن أُعطي خيراً فالله أعطاه، ومن وُقي شراً فالله وقاه، المتقون سادة، والفقهاء قادة، ومجالستهم زيادة.

“You are passing through the course of night and day with lifespans that are steadily decreasing, while your deeds are being preserved and death comes suddenly. Whoever sows good will soon harvest joy, and whoever sows evil will soon harvest regret. Every sower will reap what he has sown. The slow one will not be overtaken in his allotted share, nor will the eager attain what has not been decreed for him. Whoever is given good, it is Allah who has given it to him, and whoever is protected from evil, it is Allah who has protected him. The people of taqwā are leaders, and the scholars are guides, and sitting with them brings increase.”

A man said to Ahmad ibn Hanbal (رحمه الله) said:

من هنا إلى بلاد الترك يدعَون لك.
فكيف تؤدي شكر ما أنعم الله عليك، وما بث لك في الناس؟

“From here to the lands of the Turks, people are supplicating for you. How will you fulfil gratitude for what Allah has bestowed upon you and the esteem He has spread for you among the people?

He replied:

أسأل الله أن لا يجعلنا مُرائين

“I ask Allah not to make us among those who show off.”

“If you wish to take someone as a close friend, then anger him. If you find him as he ought to be, then befriend him.”

لا أَمَلُّ ثوبي ما وسِعَني، ولا أملُّ زوجتي ما أحسنت عشرتي، ولا أملُّ دابَّتي ما حملتني، إن الملال من سيئ الأخلاق.

“I do not tire of my garment as long as it fits me, and I do not tire of my wife as long as she treats me well, and I do not tire of my riding animal as long as it carries me.

Indeed, weariness is among the bad traits of character.”

Bakr ibn ‘Abdullāh al-Muzanī (رحمه الله) said:

إياك من الكلام ما إن أصبت فيه لم تؤجر، وإن أخطأت فيه أثمت، وهو سوء الظن بأخيك!

“Beware of speech such that, if you are correct in it, you are not rewarded, and if you are mistaken in it, you incur sin. That is having bad thoughts about your brother.”

من عاند السنة قصد الصحابة،
ومن قصد الصحابة أبغض النَّبِيّ،
ومن أبغض النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كفر بالله العظيم.

“Whoever opposes the Sunnah has in reality targeted the Companions.
Whoever targets the Companions has come to hate the Prophet ﷺ.
Whoever hates the Prophet ﷺ has disbelieved in Allah the Magnificent.”
