🅾️India signed a $2.6-billion deal with Canada’s Cameco to secure 10,000 tonnes of uranium between 2027 and 2035.

⚠️Why?- The primary driver for this deal is the sheer difference in ore quality. Canadian ore is 10 to 100 times richer.

📌Strategic benefit- By using imported fuel for the civilian grid, India can "vouchsafe" its limited domestic uranium stocks specifically for its nuclear weapons program and nuclear-powered submarines, which cannot legally use imported material.

🅾️Theme - AI Impact Summit 2026- There is a shift from AI safety-centrism to "Democratic Diffusion"- AI today is not being used by almost 85% of the world. This will create inequality and an unfair advantage to rest of humanity. So the summit was about positioning India as the leader of the Global South in ensuring AI remains an inclusive, trusted, and accessible utility rather than a concentrated power.

🔰How did we try to do this?- The New Delhi Declaration-Stresses that technology must be democratised to make a global difference-The commitments are described as "voluntary" and "non-binding" to encourage the widest possible global participation.

✅Gs-2 : IR- Chagos- transfer of sovereignty to Mauritius while leasing back Diego Garcia to the U. K. for 99 years.

🅾️Backstory : The islands are officially the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a grouping of 60 islands in seven coral atolls. The U. K. detached Chagos from Mauritius (then a colony) three years before Mauritian independence, paying a £3 million grant.

🅾️In 1971, a major joint US-UK military facility was built on Diego Garcia, the largest island, following the forced displacement of the local Chagossian population. The International Court of Justice ruled that the decolonization of Mauritius was not lawfully completed and recommended the U. K. end its administration of the archipelago.

🅾️A final treaty signed in May 2025 by PM Keir Starmer and PM Navin Ramgoolam formalizes the transfer of sovereignty to Mauritius while leasing back Diego Garcia to the U. K. for 99 years.

⚜️The current U. S. administration's dismissal of judicial rulings and international treaties represents a shift toward Unilateral Realism, where the "will of the executive" seeks to override the "rule of law," forcing partners like India to prioritize transactional diplomacy over treaty-based stability.

☝️In the above context, We should understand that international law lacks a centralized enforcement mechanism (a "global police force").. but its true power lies in its ability to force powerful actors to justify their conduct, thereby acting as a crucial instrument of accountability and a check on unilateral expansionism.
