Strategy for UPSC 2027/28 Aspirants (Going to be a long post, so be prepared for it.)
DISCLAIMER: I myself have cleared the exam in my 3rd attempt, so I made some mistakes. So this strategy is what I'd do if I have to do it again (hindsight), not what I actually did.
I am assuming that you’ve just started your prep for UPSC 2027/28. (I am sharing a common plan of where you should be at what stage, irrespective of whether you're taking coaching or not)
You’re early, and that’s your biggest advantage.
But this journey is long, and if you waste your time doing unnecessary things (like reading 6th to 12th NCERTs for 6 months or daily newspapers without clarity about static concepts), you'll end up burnt out and confused. Again these are my personal views and you might not agree with them. You're free to ignore them and move on.
So here’s a clear roadmap based on what might actually work and what I followed.
August to December 2025
Goal: GS Foundation + Optional Mastery
General Studies (GS)
1. You can follow the sources already listed on the channel or you can follow the standard books or your foundation classes, that'supto you, but please don’t run after 10 books per subject, stick to 1 good source.
2. Pick one subject at a time, complete it thoroughly with focus on conceptual clarity and understanding PYQs. If it's a big subject like Polity or Economy, you can break it into 2 parts and do 1 small subject in between them.
3. Don’t make traditional chapter-wise bulky notes- make theme-wise notes that are usable in Mains. Example: For Polity, themes like “Centre-State Relations”, “Judicial Activism”, “Electoral Reforms” etc. These themes can be identified from PYQs, a pdf is also available on this channel containing all the themes.
Optional Preparation (Full focus for 5-6 months)
1. Cover entire syllabus with crisp note-making alongside.
2. Complete all static parts of optional by January– including note-making, and Pyq model answers so that you only have to revise and practice later.
3. Don’t do answer writing now, but read toppers’ answers and understand how your notes will help in actual writing later. You can make model answers by looking at notes and Topper copies for PYQs. It will really help.
January to June 2026
Goal: Completion + Start of Mains Practice
Now your GS and Optional basics are done.
This phase is about:
1. Strengthening Mains content (notes + examples + diagrams)
2. Start answer writing (2–3 questions/week)– focus on structure, intro-body-conclusion, and completing in 7 minutes.
3. Use previous year questions to practice– don’t rely only on coaching questions.
4. Complete Ethics, Internal Security, Governance, World History in this phase (alongside revision).
5. Start Optional answer writing, one answer every 2–3 days.
Test yourself monthly
Even if not full mocks, do self-assessment on content quality and retention.
July to December 2026
Goal: Build Mains content + Note Compression + Writing Practice
This will be your most productive time before Prelims pressure kicks in.
What to do:
1. Finalize theme-wise Mains notes for all GS papers
2. Practice 1 GS paper FLT per week and 1 essay/week
3. Join a test series for mains in this time or make a habit of writing timed answers every weekend
4. Revise Optional multiple times and attempt full-length sectional tests.
5. Don’t delay revision, follow a fixed cycle: GS1 Monday, GS2 Tuesday, GS3 Wednesday, Optional Thursday, etc. (adjust as per your speed)
Avoid making 200-page notes now. Focus on compressing them into 20-page revision sheets per subject.
January to May 2027
Goal: Prelims Mode Begins
Full switch to Prelims MCQs and revision.
No more new content. The plan from here will be similar to the above plan and will be discussed in detail in December.
HOW TO STUDY ANY SUBJECT?
For now, work hard. Don’t make separate notes for pre and mains in the 1st iteration. Plus while reading a book don't make notes in the 1st reading.
Ideally, look at syllabus then 1st reading, followed by PYQ analysis, then 2nd reading with note making.
