๐ฃ Algorithms Seminar, This Friday
Hi everyone! This Friday weโll have a seminar talk by Nikolai Chukhin based on the paper
โNetwork Coding Gaps for Completion Times of Multiple Unicastsโ by Haeupler, Wajc, and Zuzic.
๐ Friday, May 22
โฐ 13:00
๐ Neapolis University
The talk will discuss the difference between network coding and ordinary routing in the CONGEST model, and why in some cases routing is provably less efficient.
Abstract
Last week, we saw how to transform a network-coding protocol into a routing protocol with not too much overhead. In this talk, I will first briefly recall the main idea of that conversion and then explain why the obtained gap cannot be substantially improved.
The goal is to prove a matching limitation for routing. We will discuss a family of graphs where solving the same multiple-unicast problem without network coding is logarithmically harder. This shows that, although coding can be simulated by routing up to a controlled loss, this loss is not just an artifact of the proof.
As usual, if youโd like to attend, please message https://t.me/natalia_kita.

Please bring your laptop - the session will be practical, and you are closer to the frontier than you think :)
๐ Date: May 22
๐ Time: 18:00โ20:00
๐ Location: Neapolis University Pafos (NUP), Kirenia Amphitheater
About the speaker:
Alyssa Mia Taliotis is an AI scientist and mathematician from Paphos, Cyprus. She holds a Masterโs in Data Science from Harvard and MIT, graduated Valedictorian in Mathematics with Honours from the University of Manchester, has published at leading machine learning conferences, spoken at global AI venues, served as a Teaching Fellow in Statistics at Harvard, and was an early engineer on NANDA โ MITโs initiative to build the worldโs first Internet of AI Agents.

๐ What a weekend for our students and faculty!
Last weekend, we had not one but two teams to be proud of.
First, Pavel Mavrin, our amazing instructor, competed as part of Dvoe protiv vetra at The 2026 Universal Cup Finals in Shanghai, China - one of the strongest international competitive programming contests, bringing together elite teams from around the world. We are very proud of Pavel - not only is he an outstanding competitive programmer himself, but he also trains the NUP ICPC teams. So yes, our students are learning from the best ๐ช
Their team finished 12th and received a bronze medal! ๐ฅ
And on the same weekend, our students Maksim Shevkoplias, Ilia Kondakov, Yura Kabkov, and Stepan Maliarovskii took part in AlgoTrade Hackathon 2026 - a 24-hour algorithmic trading hackathon in Zagreb. Their team, Chainsaw Friendship, won 2nd place! ๐
We are incredibly proud of our students, instructors, and the whole community. Congratulations, everyone - this is very inspiring! ๐๐

๐ Topic: Hardness of Approximating Graph Diameter in CONGEST
Abstract:
The diameter D of a graph is one of the most fundamental parameters in graph theory. In distributed computing, the diameter is of utmost importance, as it captures the minimal number of rounds needed for a message to traverse all the nodes in the network.
In the CONGEST model, computing the exact diameter requires almost n rounds. On the other hand, usually one needs only an approximate diameter. For example, just by running BFS from an arbitrary vertex and outputting the longest distance, the problem can be solved in O(D) rounds and gives an approximation ratio of 2.
In this talk, we will prove several lower bounds on the number of rounds in the CONGEST model needed to approximate the diameter using connections with extremal combinatorics. We will show that (6/11 + eps) approximation requires about n^0.16 rounds, (4/7 + eps) requires about n^0.25 rounds, and a (3/5 + eps) approximation requires about n^0.33 rounds.

๐ฃ CSAI Algorithms Seminar
Hi everyone! This Friday we continue our seminar series with a new talk.
๐ Friday, April 24
โฐ 13:00
๐ Neapolis University Paphos
๐ Speaker: Maxim Levitsky
๐ Topic: Sublinear-Time Distributed Algorithms for Detecting Small Cliques and Even Cycles
(based on the paper by Eden, Fiat, Fischer, Kuhn, and Oshman, DISC 2019)
Abstract
In this talk, we will consider the problems of H-freeness and H-listing: given a graph G, the goal is to determine whether it contains a fixed subgraph H, and to enumerate all its copies, for some H, in the CONGEST model.
We will show that K_4 and K_5 can be listed in sublinear time, in particular roughly n^{5/6} and n^21/22 rounds, respectively, using an edge decomposition into well-connected clusters and a sparse part, together with a simulation of the Congested Clique within clusters.
Next, we will consider even cycles C_{2k}: by exploiting a connection to Zarankiewicz numbers, one obtains improved running times of the form O(n^{1-\Theta(1/k^2)}).
Finally, we will discuss why listing all copies of C_4 requires Theta(n) rounds, highlighting a fundamental difference between cycles and cliques.

Bring your questions โ this is the best chance to clarify details before the big day.
Important:
โข If youโve already applied, you are automatically scheduled for May 3.
โข If you prefer the second date (June 14), email us to switch.
โข You can take the test only once.

๐ฃ๐ฟ Easter Holidays in Cyprus
Our CSAI students are currently enjoying the Easter holidays here in Cyprus.
With the weather being so lovely right now, everyone is spending the break in their own way: some are doing outdoor workouts and sports, some have travelled to see family and friends, some are using the time for self-study, and some are already having picnics by the sea and enjoying the spring atmosphere. ๐๐คฉโ๏ธ
Easter is one of the most important holidays in Cyprus, many people spend these days with their families, visit church services, and the whole island feels especially warm and festive.
Wishing everyone a peaceful and happy holiday break! ๐ธโจ

๐ CSAI Open Day Highlights
Thank you to everyone who joined our Open Day, we were truly happy to see you on campus! ๐
We played a few games, had lots of conversations, and gave out some small gifts as well
Students graduating this year worked on math problems and even tried presenting their solutions orally. Meanwhile, younger students joined our workshops: the โCan You Read Data?โ quiz-lecture and the โVisual Exploration of Mathematical Ideas Using Pythonโ workshop.๐จโ๐ป
We also toured the university, met current students and professors, and had plenty of time to chat and ask questions! Overall, it was a really warm and lively day!
We hope the Open Day was useful for everyone and helped answer the questions you care about most. And of course, if you think of more questions later, weโre always happy to help, not only during Open Day events. ๐
