📉 Why Foreign Investors Sometimes Lose Even When Indian Stocks Rise

An American investor invests $100,000 in Indian stocks.
In January, USD/INR = ₹83
So he invests:
$100,000 → ₹83,00,000
During the year, Indian stocks give 8% return.
₹83L → ₹89.6L
Looks like a good profit.
But when he exits, the Rupee has weakened.
USD/INR = ₹91
Now he converts money back:
₹89.6L ÷ 91 ≈ $98,460
He came with $100,000
He leaves with $98,460
👉 Profit in Rupees
👉 Loss in Dollars

Why this matters

Foreign investors (FIIs / FPIs) measure returns in US Dollars, not in Rupees.
If the Rupee falls 6–8%, it can wipe out their stock market gains.

That’s why sometimes:
• FIIs sell Indian equities
• Currency movement affects their returns
• Global investors move money between markets

Interesting part

While some FIIs were selling in recent periods,
Indian retail investors and SIP money kept buying.
Domestic mutual funds absorbed a large part of the selling.

Big lesson
Stock returns are important.
But currency movement also matters for global investors.
When the Rupee stabilizes and global flows return,
markets can move very fast.
