7 ноября 2023 года жены российских солдат провели, вероятно, первый публичный уличный протест в Москве после вторжения в Украину. Протестующие собрались на центральной Театральной площади и развернули баннеры с требованием отвести своих партнеров от линии фронта.

С февраля 2022 года в социальных сетях ежедневно появляются примеры того, как российские жены и матери подают онлайн-обращения с протестом против условий службы своих близких. Однако, драконовское законодательство России до сих пор не позволяло родственникам военнослужащих объединиться во влиятельную лоббистскую силу, как это сделали солдатские матери во время советско-афганской войны 1980-х годов.

The illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine is continuing.
Defence Intelligence can confirm the following updates on Ukraine from the week commencing 13 November 2023.

Monday:
In March 2023, a Russian Telegram news channel reported there was an ‘extremely high’ number of incidents, crimes and deaths related to alcohol abuse amongst deployed Russian forces. This was followed up in late September 2023 by a report from the independent Russian media outlet Vertska which highlighted that up to 15% of Russian soldiers in Ukraine were using drugs such as amphetamine or marijuana and that they were easy to obtain even on the frontline.

It is likely that the use of drugs and alcohol by Russian soldiers is largely an attempt to numb psychological battlefield trauma and is leading to mental health issues. There is likely little policing of illicit drug use and alcohol abuse amongst Russian troops, and on discovery of such use, Russian commanders frequently do not use the military justice system. In some cases, drug users are reportedly sent into offensive Storm-Z detachments as punishment, which have a lower survival rate. Both activities are detrimental to Russian combat effectiveness.

Tuesday:
Russia has announced it will increase production of its 152mm Krasnopol-M2 laser-guided artillery munitions and improve the round’s poor weather performance. Russian artillery has already achieved success with Krasnopol, often using it to accurately target individual Ukrainian vehicles. Russia’s defence industry has been failing to make enough conventional munitions. The planned increase in Krasnopol manufacturing is likely an attempt to use production capacity more efficiently.

Russia utilises uncrewed aerial vehicles to designate targets for Krasnopol, by shining a laser beam at the target. However, low cloud has been the key limiting factor in the round’s performance because its laser detector does not have time to spot the laser energy and maneuver for striking.

Russian industry will likely attempt to improve Krasnopol’s flight performance and reduce the round’s laser detection time. As winter weather closes in, it is likely that Russia’s access to improved precision munitions will be one of the key factors in its operational performance in Ukraine.

Wednesday:
On 09 November 2023, the Kremlin announced that President Putin will hold his traditional combined press conference and public phone-in before the end of the year. In 2022, the event was cancelled, probably because Russia had suffered high-profile military set-backs in Ukraine over the preceding weeks.

Kremlin planners will almost certainly see the event as an important waypoint in Putin’s anticipated campaign to secure a fifth term in office in the March 2024 presidential elections. He is likely to announce his candidacy before the end of 2023.

On 10 November 2023, Putin visited the Southern Military District headquarters in Rostov on Don, meeting Chief of the General Staff General Valery Gerasimov and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu. This is Putin's second visit to the headquarters in four weeks: likely an uptick in his continued efforts to paint himself as the ‘patriotic’ candidate ahead of the election campaign.

Thursday:
Over the last week, Russian forces have continued attacks towards outlying villages of the contested town of Avdiivka, Donetsk Oblast. Russia is almost certainly attempting a pincer movement to encircle the town. Avdiivka has been fought over for nearly a decade and holds political importance to Russia given its proximity to Donetsk city.

Recent advances have likely brought Russian forces close to the Ukrainian-held Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant, a sprawling industrial complex which produces coke and a variety of chemicals, occupies a key tactical position to the north of the town. The plant dominates the main road into Avdiivka and, if Russian forces were to secure it, resupplying the town would become increasingly difficult for Ukraine.

However, the industrial facility provides Ukraine with a localised defensive advantage and Russian forces will probably suffer significant personnel losses if they attempt to assault the facility.

Friday:
For the first time, Russia has likely started using A-50 MAINSTAY D, its Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft, to identify targets over Ukraine for its SA-21 long-range ground-based air defence missile system. This adds to MAINSTAY’s core mission of co-ordinating fighter aircraft.

Compared to SA-21’s usual ground-based radar, MAINSTAY can use its radar to spot adversary aircraft at longer ranges because its altitude allows it to see further around the curvature of the earth.

Russia has likely expedited integrating MAINSTAY and SA-21 partially because it is concerned about the prospect of Ukraine deploying Western-provided combat aircraft. There is a realistic possibility that Russia will accept more risk by flying MAINSTAY closer to the front-line in order to effectively carry out its new role.

Диверсии на российских железных дорогах, совершаемые антивоенными активистами, продолжают представлять собой серьезную проблему для российских властей спустя семнадцать месяцев после того, как стало известно о первых инцидентах. Исследование независимого российского СМИ «Медиазона» показывает, что по состоянию на октябрь 2023 года с момента начала вторжения в суд дошло 76 дел о диверсиях на железной дороге. По меньшей мере 137 человек, большинство из которых моложе 24 лет, были привлечены к ответственности.

С начала 2023 года на ключевых объектах железнодорожной инфраструктуры наносятся надписи, в которых указывается, что, согласно Уголовному кодексу России, диверсия может наказываться вплоть до пожизненного лишения свободы. Военная логистика России, включая снабжение для войны на Украине, по-прежнему зависит от 33 000-километровой железнодорожной линии страны.

Thursday:
Despite Russia’s official rejection of recent reports, it is almost certain that North Korean munitions have now reached ammunition depots in western Russia. These depots support Russian military operations in Ukraine.

If North Korea sustains the recent scale and pace of military-related shipments (more than 1,000 containers over the last several weeks), it will be on course to become one of Russia’s most significant foreign arms suppliers, alongside Iran and Belarus. It is currently unclear what Russia has agreed to provide North Korea in return. It is unlikely the full package has been finalised; it was highly likely one of the primary discussion topics during recent senior level Russian visits to North Korea. It will likely include a mixture of financial compensation, other economic support, the provision of military technology, and cooperation on other high technology areas, such as space.

Friday:
The Russian Airforce’s Long Range Aviation fleet (LRA) of heavy bombers has not conducted air launched cruise missile strikes into Ukraine for over a month, one of the longest gaps in such strikes since the conflict began.

While Russia is still able to utilise other strike capabilities, the LRA had been the primary method for conducting stand-off precision strikes. Russia almost certainly needed to reduce the frequency of its strikes to replenish its diminishing stockpile of AS-23a KODIAK cruise missiles.

Russia will likely use any recently produced inventory LRA munitions to strike Ukrainian energy infrastructure over the winter. Russia will highly likely continue to supplement any such campaign with Iranian-designed one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicle attacks.
