How Fixed is Fate?

If all things are fixed, why are we judged? When a storm knocks down a tree, it isn’t put on trial because nature is a neutral force. ǫrlǫg doesn’t have an agenda or feelings; it’s the original law that holds the universe together.

Now, while the law is neutral, our response to it is not, which is why we face the Helþing, where everyone is judged. We aren't judged for the things we can’t change, like the family we’re born into, the day we’re going to die, or certain events we find ourselves in, but we are judged for how we handle things. If every action were forced by a script, judgment wouldn’t make sense. It would be like punishing gravity for holding us down. We were created with an ordering mind and therefore have a choice in how we meet this neutral world. The Gods will judge our character because our character is the one thing that truly belongs to us.

The destination might be fixed, but the journey is ours. We are not victims of cruel fates, but participants in a cosmic game of life that has set rules.

How does this apply to us? Now, while we don’t know what in our lives is fated and what isn’t, we’re left to treat the past as if it is and the future as if it isn’t, which ultimately brings us back to our choices, or at least the illusion of choice, so we focus on our deeds, and on having morals, values, and integrity.

Live so that our lives are honorable when our time of judgement comes at Urðr’s Well.

There are generally two types of thinking when it comes to fate: either we think we can do whatever we want (Radical Free Will), or we have no control (Hard Fatalism), but truth usually falls in-between, beyond the dualistic trap of two extremes. The third option is what we call, Soft Fatalism.

Soft Fatalism teaches us that while the time and destination of your life is fixed, your character is not. Refer back to the

Ǫrlǫg establishes our framework, i.e. our DNA, our family, the day we die, but we’re not automatons; we can choose how we face things. As the lore teaches us, fate is a neutral force that is simply the architecture of the house we live in or the rules by which we play the game.

Kostr er betri en at klökkva sé, þeim er fúss er farar; þvíat einn dag var mér aldr of skapaðr ok allt líf lagit.

Choices are better than whimpering for one who is eager to go; for one day my life was measured and all my life laid out.

This quote from the Skírnismál 13 highlights our personal agency against that which ǫrlǫg has fixed. If every thought were pre-written, whimpering wouldn't be a choice; it would just be something that happened. By telling us that courage is a "better choice," the lore is showing us that we have a mind to decide how we handle things. We don't try to escape our paths, but walk it with honor.

You can’t "life-hack" your way out of a fate, but you can choose not to whimper when it arrives. Dignity is found in aligning your will with the divine law, not wasted in a futile rebellion against it.

The destination is set, so live the journey in honor.

The Heathen Mentality

We’re told that we can do anything we want, yet we’re bound by the woven threads of fate. Even the heroes of our folk knew that strength and courage doesn’t overturn what has been laid down.

In the Vǫlsunga saga, Sigurd Fáfnir's bane meets his end with the recognition that what was long foretold has now come to pass, that no one can fight against fate. Sigurd knows that honor is not found in trying to escape your death, but in facing it without flinching.

Swā wyrd ġetēoþ ūs, hīo
āgǣþ swā hīo sċeal.

As fate draws us, she goes as she must.

This is the mindset of a Herdrengr, one who embodies strength, courage and honor. We do not waste ourselves crying out against the inevitable, but instead, we use our inspiration to meet that which we must face with dignity. As Sigurd could not fight against his fate, so too must we learn to walk our path with that same unyielding strength.

It’s not about winning a battle against the Norns to prove our strength, but having courage against the law they pronounced.

As wyrd unfolds, stand strong and meet your ørlǫg as a Drengr.

People often think the Golden Rule is merely to be nice to others and treat them as we want to be treated, but it’s more than that; it’s the primordial law of cause and effect that’s written into existence itself. Ǫrlǫg is a neutral force and therefore, neither seeks suffering nor success. Ǫrlǫg is simply the framework through which all things unfold.

In our lives, we experience ǫrlǫg as wyrd, lived out in Ora tidal application that actions bring consequences. Cause and effect. Good actions tend to bring good consequences and bad actions tend to bring bad consequences. Our forebears understood that no deed is isolated and every action is laid within the greater order of things; every choice is part of the law working itself out through a life. We do not stand outside fate and write our own destiny from nothing, but within the Web of Wyrd, our attitude and conduct determines how we’ll meet the consequences upon the road that’s appointed to us.

Þat ræð ek þér it fyrsta, at þú við frændr þína vammalaust verir.

I counsel you first: be blameless toward your kinsmen.

We live within a cosmic legal order. The Gods see more deeply into ǫrlǫg than we do, and thus divine law is good because it aligns with the deeper intrinsic structure and order of reality. To live honorably is not to escape fate, but to walk rightly within it. When one acts with honor, one lays down the conditions for honorable consequences. When one acts with weakness, faithlessness, or dishonor, one generally meets the fruit of those deeds in time; thus, we eventually encounter the law, which is already present in the fabric of existence, as it’s being worked out through our lives.

Fate is neutral, but our conduct is judged by its consequences. Every deed is woven into the order of things. You do not stand above the path and create it by will alone, but walk the path set within ǫrlǫg, and by your actions you determine whether you meet it with honor or disgrace. Don’t curse the shape of consequence when your own deeds brought it forth.

Before the Gods and man, may every step we take be honorable, pious, and with a righteous will and good conduct.

We sometimes like to think that we’re in charge of our story, but before we even spoke our first words, the Norns have already thread our lives into the web of wyrd.

At the foot of the Yggdrasil, by Urðarbrunnr, sits Urðr (That which is), Verðandi (That which is becoming), and Skuld (That which shall be). As the Vǫluspá tells us that they established laws, allotted us life, and pronounced ørlǫg.

The Norns take the golden thread of a person’s life and tie it down before they even take their first breath. We don’t pray to the Norns to change our path, because the path is already laid, so we look to them to understand the boundaries that give our life its shape.

This is how our ancestors viewed things, and in returning to the old way, so too shall we.

Stand strong, participate in your wyrd and honor the decree of the Norns who measured your life from the beginning according to ørlǫg.

People speak of luck as if it’s random, but nothing is happenstance Derived from the Old Norse ør (primordial) and lǫg (law), ǫrlǫg is the "Original Law,” the measured, laid-down structure of the universe that has existed before anything. It’s the foundation upon which the Norns weave. To understand ǫrlǫg is to understand that the universe is ordered, measured, deliberate. Our ancestors understood that every deed is a "laying down" of a layer of this law. You do not "find" your fate, but meet the law as it’s seen in our lives.

“Swā wyrd ġetēoþ ūs, hīo āgǣþ swā hīo sċeal.”
(As fate draws us, she goes as she must).

This is not a cause for defeatism, but a call to the highest form of discipline. If the law is fixed, then the only variable is your conduct within it. Look for the Law in the pattern of our lives, for you are not a victim of circumstances, but a participant in a cosmic legal process that began before even Yggdrasill grew, so truly as fate draws us, she goes as she must.

Stand strong folk and embrace that which is laid down and allotted to you.

Ørlǫg and Wyrd

Many people mistake the fixed threads of their life for the way they choose to live. They confuse the rules of the existence with their own actions, but there’s a distinction between the structure and the becoming. If ǫrlǫg is the stone, wyrd is the water that flows over it.
While ǫrlǫg is the "Original Law" etched into the universe, think of wyrd as how we experience the law in our lives; it’s the shape of becoming. The Norns do not just set the law, but they weave it into a pattern that moves through time. To understand wyrd is to understand that life is a process of arriving at your appointed hour.

Wyrd is stronger, measuring mightier than any man’s thought. We don’t act to change the law - we act to fulfill the law. Our choices don't rewrite the thread, but they give the thread its hue. One who meets their fate with negativity creates a different pattern than the person who meets it with courage and honestly.
Look at your life as a picture drawn in a coloring book. The lines are already there for you to follow, but it’s your actions that provide the color. You don't choose the lines, but you choose the colors, so the final picture is can be bright with honor or dark with excuses.

Stand strong and give form to your fate through a disciplined mind and an unyielding heart. Never settle for mediocrity, but remember, effort is worth more than result.
